On the 11th August, Year 10 went to the bstreetsmart event held at Afterpay Arena in Homebush. Founded by Westmead Hospital trauma nurses, bstreetsmart has been held for the past 22 years and is Australia\u2019s largest educational event on road safety with over 200,000 Year 10, 11 and 12 students having participated. Its aim is to reduce the fatality and injury rates of young people by promoting safe behaviour as drivers, riders and passengers. Bstreetsmart provided students with first hand experiences as well as an understanding of their responsibilities as a driver and passenger as well as a greater awareness of the consequences of distracted driving, inattention, speeding, drink and drug driving and driver fatigue.<\/p>\n

What our students said:\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI gained a greater understanding of the importance of road safety and responsible decision-making. I learnt about the potential consequences of unsafe behaviour and how distractions can affect our ability to make safe choices. The experience reinforced the importance of being aware of my surroundings, considering the consequences of my actions and taking responsibility for my safety and the safety of others.\u201d<\/em> Isabelle\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bstreetsmart excursion was an eye\u2011opening experience that showed me the real consequences of unsafe driving through the crash reenactments and survivor stories we saw. Being there made me realise how important it is to make responsible choices on the road.\u201d<\/em> Claire<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the whole car crash scene was really interesting and it really showed everyone how important it is to be responsible when driving and to make the right decision when driving after going out with friends. All the people who shared their experiences with crashes were so engaging and showed how you never know what’s going to happen in your future and to never take your life or the people around you for granted.\u201d<\/em> Alegra<\/p>\n
