In 1866, she founded St Joseph\u2019s School in an old stable, the first free Catholic school in Penola, South Australia. With Father Julian Tenison Woods, she founded an order of nuns, the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. They opened many schools and other charitable institutions and continue to this day. She was canonised by Pope Benedict XVI on 17 October 2010: the first Australian Saint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Friday 8 August we celebrated the Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mary embarked on a spiritual journey focused on &#8220;God&#8217;s saving justice,&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">culminating in the founding of a religious order that expanded across continents.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mary cared for Australia&#8217;s indigenous peoples, prisoners facing execution, children needing education, the homeless, orphans, the sick, and anyone in need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now more than ever, Mary MacKillop&#8217;s enduring motto<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> comes into sharp focus:<\/span><\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><i>\u201cNever see a need without doing something about it\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This resonates as something we all\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">should heed and put into action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mary shows us how God seeks to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">answer the day\u2019s troubles through us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/d1dfwahqlx324v.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2025\/08\/image5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20501\" src=\"https:\/\/d1dfwahqlx324v.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2025\/08\/image5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d1dfwahqlx324v.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2025\/08\/image5.png 503w, https:\/\/d1dfwahqlx324v.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2025\/08\/image5-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/d1dfwahqlx324v.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2025\/08\/image5-187x150.png 187w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 503px) 100vw, 503px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">O God, source of all goodness,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You have shown us in\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Saint Mary a woman of faith living\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by the power of the Cross,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">teach us, we pray, by her example to live the\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gospel in changing times and to respect\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and defend the human dignity of all in our land.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amen<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Venerable Nano Nagle, pray for us.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne and worked as a governess and a teacher to support her family.
