Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Staff

Welcome to the final edition of La Verite for Term 1.

As we close the chapter on these first ten weeks, it is a fitting moment to reflect on the energy, growth, and transformation we have experienced. The beginning of a new academic year always brings change – fresh opportunities, new faces, evolving routines, and, naturally, a fair share of challenges. From adjusting to new timetables and subjects to building connections and adapting to heightened expectations, the term has also called on all of us at different times to be resilient and flexible.

Transition is never without its trials; academic demands intensify, social landscapes shift, and expectations evolve. Yet, it is through these very challenges that we grow, not just as individuals, but as a community.

And throughout this time, I have been deeply inspired by how our community has risen to meet these moments, embodying the spirit of Nano Nagle. Her courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication to service continue to guide us. We see this spirit in the student who takes time to help a peer, in the teacher who goes the extra mile, and in every effort to create an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Nano’s legacy of “deeds not words” reminds us to face each challenge with action rooted in empathy. We have seen this in the formation of new friendships, the excitement around new clubs, committees and subjects, and the way we have supported each other in times of uncertainty – echoes of Nano’s own commitment to building communities of care.

This term, our community has demonstrated adaptability, creativity, and solidarity. We have turned obstacles into opportunities and continued to deepen our understanding of what it means to live out the Presentation values. We have truly embodied Nano’s call to “spend ourselves for the poor,” not just in service, but in spirit, by lifting each other up. Examples abound in the stories over the term reported in our Newsletter.

As we head into the break and look forward to the terms ahead, may we carry with us the strength we have found in one another and the lessons we have learned. Let us continue to walk in the footsteps of Nano Nagle, meeting every challenge with grace, courage, and a heart for service.

May the spirit of La Verite, The Truth, continue to guide us all.

The Domremy Parent Representative Group

The Domremy Parent Representative Group, (DPRG), met for the first time last week.

We discussed a range of items including our College goals for 2025. We are grateful for the support of our DPRG and their work in maintaining the strong parent-school partnership.

Optional HSC Holiday Revision Workshops

During the upcoming Easter School Holidays, Year 12 teachers are offering our Year 12 students a variety of HSC Holiday Revision Workshops. I encourage students to make the most of these opportunities to engage in review activities that will refresh their understanding of content and develop their skills in applying their knowledge. Information has been sent home via Compass and The Parent Weekly.

Farewell – we wish you well

It is never easy to farewell a valued member of our Domremy community. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge Ms. Monica Ribeiro, our Acting Religious Education Coordinator, who has been a much loved and valued staff member since October 2021 and has served in a number of significant leadership positions. Ms. Ribeiro has consistently brought gentleness and strength to every role she has undertaken, demonstrating joy and pride in all her endeavours. We offer our heartfelt congratulations on her appointment as the Religious Education Coordinator at Brigidine College, Randwick. We will certainly miss her presence here, but we know she will continue to do brilliant work in her new role.

On a final note …

As Easter approaches, it is an ideal time to pause and reflect on our own faith journeys. The Gospel stories of Holy Week invite us to see Jesus through the eyes of faith and love, recognising the light of God even in the darkness of His passion and death. Viewing Jesus’ passion in this way reveals a divine love stronger than sin, a light that shines in our darkest moments, a power that brings new life from death, and a poverty that enriches us deeply.

Often, we hear the story of Jesus’ final journey condensed into a brief narrative. However, Holy Week encourages us to experience this journey more slowly, day by day. We are invited to see through the eyes of the anointing woman, the centurion, Joseph of Arimathea, and the faithful women. By looking beneath the surface and listening deeply, we can recognize the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for us, so that we might have life to the fullest.

Each year, through our faith, God grants us this joyful season to prepare for the celebration of the Paschal mystery with renewed minds and hearts, as we recall the great events that gave us new life in Christ. Easter, transitioning from the darkness of Good Friday to the radiant light of Easter Sunday, is a beautiful time for families to gather, enjoy each other’s company, and celebrate the unique gifts each person brings.

I take this opportunity to wish each of you and your families the peace and blessings of a Holy and Happy Easter. I thank all our students and our Domremy families for your support during this term. I also extend my thanks to our remarkable staff for all their efforts and support this term.

I wish you all a safe and relaxing break. All students resume classes on Tuesday 29 April in full winter uniform.

Next term promises to be another fantastic term, with the main highlight – GREASE – our College musical!

Lent and Easter in Australia today

Lent and Easter in Australia today – in our busy lives, the power of ritual, (whether it is based on community practice, national days of remembrance and memorial or religious tradition) – can offer us solace and healing. All over the world, Easter is the high-point of the Christian calendar. After the six weeks of Lent, the 40 days which represent Christ’s temptation in the wilderness, we come together to celebrate the grace and mercy of God through the power of Christ’s resurrection.

Christian Discipleship demands ‘Falling in love with God’. It is a paradoxical call, at once very simple, yet very demanding. Its territory is tolerating messiness and imperfection. For it involves having learnt the ‘hard’ truth of what Richard Rohr OFM often points out about the spiritual journey: “You can’t come to God by doing it right – you come to God by doing it wrong, otherwise, you don’t fall in love with God, you fall in love with yourself.” Rohr reminds me of Tony de Mello SJ’s paradoxical saying, “Be grateful for your sins. They are carriers of grace”. Sooner or later – we must all come to the realisation that only God can save us from our fears and our addictions.

Many of us need to ‘hit a wall’ in order to have a chance of waking up to the reality that we are living insane lives as long as we believe that we can ‘control’ things on our own. When we wake up to the real world, we find God patiently waiting for us, ready to help, ready to save us and make us whole. That is the resurrection in our lives – often ‘frozen’.

The mysteries of Holy Week and Easter invite us to be open to receive the grace of encouragement. For Mary at the foot of the cross, and for all the disciples, Golgotha was a moment of anguish. Everything seemed to have been lost. Jesus himself cried out: “Father. Father. Why have you abandoned me? …. and there was darkness over the world”. Yet within their discouragement and anguish those first disciples, Mary among them, discovered through their eyes of faith that there were new signs of life. They remembered Jesus’ words: “when a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies it bears much fruit”. However difficult to understand the mystery, the empty tomb on Easter Sunday morning proclaims unexpected new life.

As Christians we especially rejoice on Easter Sunday that Jesus has risen and saved us, through our weaknesses and wounds. But that is the ‘Good News’ many of us find challenging to accept. Easter Sunday is a good time to reflect on why perhaps sometimes we can resist God’s deep love for each of us. Pope Francis reminds us that “this is a time of reading the times, not looking back, always looking forward! Like one who is at the helm of a boat: to see if the course is right the helmsman does not look behind him, but looks forward, keeping an eye on two or three stars that give orientation”. (Pope Francis)

This week we gathered together as a College for our Easter Liturgy. Under the leadership of Ms Monica Riberio, our Religious Education Coordinator, the students effectively captured the key events and message of the Easter Triduum which is at the heart of our Catholic faith. The theme of the service was ‘Follow my son to Calvary- ’ where we experienced the Stations of the Cross through Mary’s eyes. Our liturgy truly brought to life our College motto ‘La Verite – The Truth.’ as we engaged with this well known story and foundational belief in our faith through the eyes of Jesus’ mother. Pope Franics reflects on the important witness and model Mary was and is in the passion story by stating that “The Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus and his first disciple, shows us the way.” She followed her son and took on herself her own part of the suffering, of the darkness and bewilderment, and she walked on the road of the Passion, keeping alive in her heart the lamp of faith.” (Pope Franics).

We pray that we too continue to keep the “lamp of faith” alive in our hearts this Easter.

Loving God, help us to find you once again.

Our search for you asks us sometimes to be still,

For You are all tenderness and compassion, slow to anger, rich in graciousness.

You call us ‘fellow workers.’

May this Easter season renew our energy to serve your kingdom of justice and peace.

From the College Captain – Term 1 Leadership Wrap-up

Reflecting on the term gone by, we acknowledge the achievements, events and moments that enriched our Domremy community. The Year 12 leadership team this term has taken the initiative in planning and constructing this term’s events to reflect our school values and implement our College theme “The Storyline is yours… What role will you play?”

Our school committees have continued throughout this term, offering opportunities for new students to get involved in humanities, environment, languages, debating, morning Rosary, orchestra and choir. These committees allow students to foster new relationships across year groups while participating in new learning opportunities. We commend all our Year 12 leaders for their hard work and planning when establishing these committees.

This term we also congratulated our newly appointed Sienna and Joseph House Captains, Georgia and Mia, along with our various SRC leaders who have started to discuss initiatives to implement for this year. The new leaders have shown a positive impact, and we can’t wait to see their initiatives progress over the year.

This year’s swimming carnival was nothing but spectacular. Having the theme of ‘Beach Party’, students were encouraged to dress up displaying their house spirit as students completed various events with determination to get their house points needed to win. We congratulate all our swimmers, along with Nagle House, for dominating the swimming carnival and emerging as overall champion, whilst Orleans House was victorious and a standout in succeeding in its house cheers and war cries.

Highlights of the term included Domremy’s Open Day and our students’ involvement in Vinnies’ Sandwich making. Both initiatives encouraged widespread participation and exemplified Domremy’s core values in action.

Driven by a spirit of generosity, our school community actively fundraised for Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion this term. Our initiatives included a fun St Patrick’s Day Green donut sale and a memorable Domremy ‘Teacher v Teacher Family Feud’ that brought everyone together. Further celebrating our unity, Harmony Day saw two cultural performances, students connecting over extended lunchtime picnics with friends, complemented by a delicious bake sale featuring the diverse flavours of our cultures.

Looking ahead to next term, we are thrilled to continue our Year 12 journey and create memories through upcoming key events such as Domremy Day and our Athletics Carnival. We also extend our sincere thanks to all the teachers, particularly Mrs. McGahan and Mrs. Vassallo, whose invaluable support ensures the smooth running of all our events.

Year 11 Design and Technology SHAPE Excursion

On Friday 28 March, Year 11 Design & Technology students embarked on an excursion to the NESA SHAPE Exhibition held at The Walsh Bay Arts Precinct. It consisted of a showcase of a range of HSC Design & Technology, Textiles & Design and Industrial Technology projects and portfolios from 2024 HSC students, which allowed us to gather inspiration from and learn more about the different areas of design. We also attended a seminar from a HSC marker that provided an informative talk regarding the process of completing a Design & Technology Major Design Project and tips for success.(- Annaliese & Sandra)

Year 11 Ancient History excursion: Chau Chak Wing Museum

On our Year 11 Ancient History excursion to the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney, we had the incredible opportunity to engage with real ancient artefacts through hands-on activities. A highlight of the day was getting to handle genuine historical objects that were thousands of years old and gain a deeper understanding of their significance. We also explored exhibits featuring real Egyptian mummies, sarcophagi, and ancient relics, debating the ethics of displaying human remains. We also saw ancient Greek and Roman artefacts and statues and an amazing lego diorama of Pompeii. The experience was incredibly fun and we all had an amazing day! (Niamh, Y 11).

Native Garden Clean Up: Environment Committee

Last Thursday, April 3, our dedicated Environment Committee members rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty, literally! We spent a productive afternoon in our school’s native garden, giving it some much-needed TLC.

A big thank you to all the students who volunteered their time and energy to weed, clear debris, and generally tidy up the garden. Their enthusiasm and hard work made a significant difference. The garden is now looking much healthier and more vibrant, ready to support our local native plants and wildlife.

We removed a surprising amount of invasive weeds that were competing with our native species, allowing them to thrive. It was wonderful to see the Committee working together as a team, sharing their knowledge and passion for the environment.

Last week our Year 9 students were busy constructing their ceramic vessels. They are creating forms which are a personal response to their culture or a place which is significant to them.

Year 7 History: Cookie Excavation

Year 7 classes have been studying the work of archaeologists in History this term. In order to gain a practical insight into their work, students were engaged in a cookie excavation activity.

Student Reflections

In the Cookie Excavation session in our history class, we were able to experience what being an archaeologist is like. It was a very enjoyable time, and all we needed was a cartesian plane to plot our cookie (which is also our site in this case), a cookie, and also a toothpick which is our tool to dig up the choc chips in our site. Our class got 3 cookies each, 1 for excavating, and 2 for eating. The activity was really entertaining, considering that this was a history lesson! (Joanne)

Today in History class we learnt about archaeologists and pretended to be one. We did a super exciting activity where we each got a cookie and used two toothpicks and started to use that to take out the choc chips! The aim was to try not to break the cookie. We used a cartesian plane graph to plot the spots where we got out the choc chips, I got 19 choc chips (which is also called an artifact) and of course at the end we ate it all up! The hardest bit was to try and not eat the cookie. It was a very educational, fun and tasty experience! (Audrey)

Songwriting Masterclass opportunity with Philippe-Marc Anquetil

What a fantastic opportunity for our Year 10 students – a Songwriting Masterclass opportunity with Philippe-Marc Anquetil, renowned Australian singer, song-writer, vocal arranger, producer and mixing engineer who has forged an international career working with artists such as One Direction, Little Mix, Cher, Kelly Rowland and Jessie J, to name a few.

Philippe-Marc has been part of the Arts HQ – Sydney Catholic Schools CaSPA team as one of the artists-in-residence and was with our Year 10 students this week educating and mentoring them on their music journeys. A privilege for our students!

‘Only for tonight’ – Written by Year 10 music students Sarah, Chloe, Lily and Sade. Recorded and produced by Philippe-Marc. Students worked through the songwriting, recording and production process to develop a ‘radio ready song’, and we think it is an absolutely wonderful song!

Royal Easter Show – Year 10 Food Technology

Year 10 Food Technology students attended an excursion to the Royal Easter Show when it opened on Friday this week. Students engaged in a wide range of food-based activities and workshops, including a Bush Tucker education experience for students. Students also attended a working dairy presentation where they learnt how a commercial dairy farm operates.

The Woolworths Food Dome exposed the girls to various upcoming food trends and new food products. Students enjoyed speaking to the farmers about the royal district displays and received a great insight into some of the challenges our farmers have faced over the past few years.

Year 10 Visual Arts – Portrait painting

Year 10 Visual Arts students are currently completing a unit on portrait painting and have been learning about creating an ‘underpainting’. The initial layer helps to establish values, light, shadow and composition – acting as a blueprint for the final painting.

Always great to enjoy an outdoor classroom – Period 2, Year 7 Visual Arts – pencil drawings of our beautiful Delapre heritage building.

A stunning backdrop on a stunning autumn day had our Year 7 students working with smiles ear to ear and creating some wonderful sketches!

Kids’ Lit Quiz – Teams place 2nd and 3rd

Eight girls (seven from Year 7 and one from Year 8) competed in the Kids’ Lit Quiz at St Ursula’s, Kingsgrove, on Monday 7 April. The Kids’ Lit Quiz is a local, national and international competition to promote reading run in Australia by Kids’ Lit Quiz Australia.

The girls competed against 13 other schools and 28 teams on the day.

Quiz questions were based on all kinds of Literature – classics, nursery rhymes, popular childrens’ literature, fairy tales, ‘Harry Potter’. There were 10 different categories; including ‘Gardens’, ‘Abbreviations’, ‘Middle Names’ and ‘Houses’ with 10 quiz questions in each category.

Our teams placed second (Team 1) and third (Team 2) overall in a deciding face-off against a team from St Andrews’ Cathedral School. We missed out on first place, which would have seen us earning a place at the National Lit Quiz finals, by the narrowest of margins.

There was a play-off between our two teams and a team from St Andrew’s Cathedral School in a tie-breaker for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. Our two teams emerged triumphant!!

Well done to Sabrina, Isabella, Jessica, Ira, Mataali, Theresa, Eimear, and Bella for an outstanding effort!

ABC Radio National Podcast Recording: “The Minefield”

Last Saturday 5 April, a group of enthusiastic Domremy College students had the unique opportunity to attend a live studio recording of ABC Radio National’s acclaimed podcast, “The Minefield.” Hosted by Waleed Aly and Scott Stephens, “The Minefield” invites listeners into each episode with a central question, and our students were present for a discussion on a particularly relevant and timely issue.

The topic of the day was: “Is AI a Technology to be Feared, or a Tool to be Taught?” As artificial intelligence continues to shape our world, the live discussion led by Aly and Stephens provided invaluable insights and diverse perspectives on the ethical considerations surrounding AI use.

The visit to the ABC Ultimo studios offered a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at radio production. Students witnessed the professional environment and the careful orchestration involved in bringing a podcast to life. While participation in the question and answer segment was voluntary, the insightful questions posed by our Domremy students following the recording truly stood out. Their thoughtful engagement with the topic was so impressive that the production team invited several of the girls to stay and be recorded sharing their perspectives on the use of AI tools. They spoke candidly about their personal experiences with AI, how they perceived their teachers were integrating these tools into the classroom, and their overall thoughts on the role of AI in education. This spontaneous opportunity provided an incredible platform for our students’ voices to be heard on a national level.

I am very proud of the exceptional engagement of the girls and the remarkable opportunity that arose from their insightful contributions to the discussion with Waleed Aly. The entire experience, from observing the live recording to actively participating in a follow-up discussion, was a valuable extension of their classroom learning.

The College extends its gratitude to ABC Radio National for this generous invitation. It was a fantastic experience, allowing our students to connect theoretical concepts with current societal debates, witness media in action, and even become contributors to the national conversation.

Chloe Gao makes 2025 NSWCCC Diving Team

Huge Congratulations to our Chloe Gao, Year 12 2025 Sports Prefect and talented Diver, who has been named in the 2025 NSWCCC Diving team. Chloe successfully competed at the NSWCCC Diving Trials last week. Chloe and the team will compete at the NSW All School Diving competition later this year at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.

Chloe, who was named in Diving Australia’s 2832 Dream Squad as an athlete “with the potential to achieve excellence at the 2028 and/or 2032 Olympic Games,” works and trains hard; she is to be congratulated for her commitment and unwavering dedication to her sport.

A Silver Medal bounty – Junior, Intermediate and Senior Girls Touch Footy Teams

What a spectacular day on the water on Thursday to finish off our Term 1 Dragon Boat program on a high! Students from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Domremy College, raced off over 3x200m races in a mini Sydney Catholic Schools Championship for Term 1.

Results:

Heat 1 – Domremy by a touch

Heat 2 – Domremy by a head

Grand final – now equal paddler numbers and again so close, with Domremy just a touch ahead at the line!!!

Congratulations ladies on an awesome team effort!

Easter Holiday Optional HSC Workshops for Year 12

In order to best support our HSC students as they prepare for their Assessments and Exams, we are providing an opportunity for students to attend holiday workshops. The College is offering optional HSC Revision Workshops to our Year 12 2025 HSC students during the Easter Holidays. These workshops, together with those offered by Sydney Catholic Schools on Zoom, are an excellent opportunity for students to revise and prepare and give themselves the best possible chance to succeed in their exams. Winter Uniform Term 2 – Uniform Shop

Students return in winter uniform in Term 2.

To assist with any uniform needs, the Uniform Shop will be open during the April school holidays, by appointment only.

Appointment Bookings can be made via the Uniform Shop’s Calendly link . The Uniform Shop’s website, and its booking link, can also be reached via the College website.

Parents and students are welcome to visit the Uniform Shop during term time, on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 8.00am – 9.30am. No appointment is necessary at those times.

Try Domremy for a Day – Year 6 students

We have had an overwhelming response to our Try Domremy for a Day experience for Years 4 and 5 students. Registration for the Year 4 Day has now closed and Year 5 students enjoyed their day last week.
