Holy Week Prayer

Lord,  Jesus Christ,

You became human and took
on the realities of humanity in our world.

During Your life on earth,
You gave hope, perspective and salvation to many.

Your words are challenging, uplifting, encouraging and guiding.

At the end of your earthly life here in our world,

You took upon yourself all suffering
and made the cross a sign of hope.

At this time when the whole world is suffering,

when people are isolated and left to themselves,
when people mourn for their loved ones,

where people are
sacrificing their physical and psychological strength to help others,
we pray in solidarity and entrust ourselves to You.

Amen.

Easter Sunday Prayer

Lord God,
You loved this world so much,
That you gave your one and only Son,
That we might be called your children too.

Lord, help us to live in the gladness and grace
Of Easter Sunday, everyday.
Let us have hearts of thankfulness
For your sacrifice.

Let us have eyes that look upon
Your grace and rejoice in our salvation.
Help us to walk in that mighty grace
And tell your good news to the world.
All for your glory do we pray, Lord,

Amen.

Venerable Nano Nagle, Pray for us.

The last eight weeks have been ridiculously busy in a very vibrant and exciting way. Nonetheless, I can see the exhaustion on the faces of our staff and students. We have much to celebrate across all areas of College life. We have certainly witnessed enthusiastic participation and commitment to the traditions and values that we uphold as a catholic Presentation community. An example is the number of amazing events held in honour of Harmony Week as well as the fundraising events for the various social justice causes. All of which were a wonderful testament to ‘charity in action’. Our girls exhibited teamwork and generosity for worthwhile causes.

We are grateful for the untiring efforts of Mrs Jane Sullivan, our Religious Education Coordinator, her team and the Student Leaders for their organisation and generous support. Our Holy Thursday Liturgy today was very moving and allowed the time and space to contemplate the Passion of Christ.

Staff News

We welcomed the following staff during the term:

  • Mrs Alison Galia who joined us earlier this year as our new Curriculum Coordinator.  Alison comes with a wealth of experience under her belt, we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to collaborate with her. Years 7 and 11 Interim Parent Student Teacher Interviews

Parent/Student/Teacher (PST) Interviews in all years have an extremely important role in forging the educational partnership between the College and families. They give parents and carers an opportunity to touch base with their daughters’ teachers who are available to discuss progress thus far and develop goals and strategies to further enhance students’ academic success.

Years 7 and 11 PST Interviews are scheduled to take place on Monday 8 April from 2.00pm to 7.30pm face to face. These interviews are an opportunity for parents to gain an insight into how their Year 7 student is transitioning into high school, or how their Year 11 student is transitioning into Stage 6. Information regarding bookings is available in The Parent Weekly.

I urge all Year 7 and Year 11 parents to take this opportunity to discuss how their daughter is settling in and growing in her new course of studies.

Year 7 and Year 9 NAPLAN 2024

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy, (NAPLAN), is an annual assessment conducted across Australia for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. These tests have now been moved to Term 1. Students in Years 7 and 9 sat Online Practice tests for Reading, Language, Numeracy and Writing in Week 5 with the actual NAPLAN Tests taking place in Weeks 7 through to this week.

NAPLAN tests the skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. These tests whilst only a snapshot give valuable information regarding the progress of each student in the various areas.

On a final note…

As we approach the Easter long weekend, let us take a moment to pause and reflect. During the Lenten observance, how have we fared in our commitment to prayer, abstinence, almsgiving, and spiritual reflection and growth? These are the pillars of Lent that guide us in our journey of faith and self-discovery.

We began the liturgical ceremonies of Easter week with Palm Sunday. Now, as we enter into this sacred time, it is important to remember that Easter is the cornerstone of our faith. The readings throughout this weekend and the preceding weeks have centered around the themes of resurrection and the restoration of faith.

Let us not forget that each year, through our faith, God blesses us with this joyful season – a time to renew our minds and hearts as we prepare to celebrate the paschal mystery. Pope Francis reminds us that through Christ’s paschal mystery, we journey from Easter to Easter, continually moving towards the fulfillment of our salvation. It is through hope that we are saved, as the mystery of salvation unfolds within us and throughout history and creation.

Easter is a time of transition, from the darkness of Good Friday to the radiant light of Easter Sunday. It is a time for families to come together, to cherish one another’s presence, and to celebrate the unique gifts and contributions that each individual brings to the table. Let us embrace this opportunity to reconnect with loved ones, to share in moments of joy and fellowship, and to deepen our appreciation for the blessings that surround us.

May we be filled with gratitude for the gift of salvation and the promise of new life. May we carry the light of Easter within us, illuminating the path of love, hope, and reconciliation for all.

Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed and joyous Easter. I ask that you keep all members of our community in your prayers.

I thank you for your continued cooperation and support.

Blessings on you and your families,

Mrs Antoinette McGahan, Principal

St Patrick’s Day Mass ☘️

St Patrick’s Day Mass ☘️

On 18 March, a group of Year 9 Domremy students and Mrs Vengsarkar gathered at St. Mary’s Cathedral to experience a truly memorable St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Terence Brady and the homily given by Father Patrick Mara. He reminded us of the dramatic history of St Patrick who was captured by pirates at age 16 and enslaved, only to later return to Ireland, ready to forgive his captors and spread the Good News in Ireland. This led to the conversion of Irish people to Christianity. It is St Patrick’s deep sense of compassion and service that we continue to celebrate, a legacy that stretches all the way back to the 5th Century.

Domremy College shares its Irish roots with the Presentation sisters’ founder, Nano Nagle, who pioneered Catholic education in Ireland. Each year Domremy honours this important feast day in acknowledgement of a shared Irish heritage and culture. We felt grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Mass, to celebrate community, faith, and the enduring power of tradition.

Mrs Julia Vengsarkar, English Teacher

☘️🟢 🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩’s for St Patrick’s Day

☘️🟢 🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩’s for St Patrick’s Day

St Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on 17 March.

This year we celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day at the College on Monday 18 March,  with the student leadership team together with Mrs Sullivan, Mrs Carbone and Mrs Ribiero, selling doughnuts, (many of them green), to the Domremy community. Proceeds were raised in support of Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion.

We would like to extend a special thanks to the Village Sourdough Bakery Five Dock which provided the team with the doughnuts. We thank the Bakery for its support of this event.

We can report that the student leadership team raised an additional $254 which will be added to the school’s total contribution to Project Compassion.

#️⃣harmonyweek #️⃣everyonebelongs

#️⃣harmonyweek #️⃣everyonebelongs

As we travel through the month of March into autumn, we are reminded of the beauty that lies in the diversity of our school surroundings and our community. It is this diversity that enriches our experiences, broadens our perspectives, and ultimately unites us in a tapestry of harmony. Today we took time to celebrate this amazing world that we live in and were able to see the colours of diversity in the sporting jerseys and national costumes of the globe. We also heard the students singing the National Anthem with such pride at lunch – I am still not sure who was leading them in song, however, I am looking forward to our next assembly to hear Australians rejoicing like they did today. The mufti day gold coin donations were a very welcome blessing to our Project Compassion effort, and for this we are very grateful. Great job Year 12 Leadership Team for your promotion of this meaningful event.

Deanery Youth event at Domremy

Deanery Youth event at Domremy

On Friday 22 March, we had over 30 students take part in a youth afternoon hosted by Domremy. The Deanery event allows for students across multiple schools to come together to create relationships with one another and to further develop their relationship with Christ. Holy Cross Ryde and Marist Sisters College in Woolwich as well as Domremy girls in Years 10, 11 and 12 took part in this event. We are grateful to Sydney Catholic Youth presenters for facilitating the event focused on youth and the importance of trusting the process.

The afternoon started with a few icebreaker games to allow the students to get to know each other and feel comfortable around each other. The session then began in prayer followed by discussions around temptations within our society that can limit our faith. Finally, we ended the session in the presence of God and allowed the students to continue to get to know other members of the community who are also interested in developing and deepening their faith.

There was discussion around the idea of the challenges that young people face within our society and the importance of having faith and trust that God will lead you on the right path. The students also spoke about the temptations within society such as social media and the impact that this has on their faith and the faith of others. Social media in particular is a reason as to why the faith of young people has been declining as there are stereotypes around faith within society. The conversation allowed our young people to understand the importance of Christ in our lives. This does not mean just in terms of going to church but rather how they treat each other and the decisions that they make are all being guided by Christ. Especially as they approach the next few years of their lives when big decisions need to be made about their future, they should have hope and trust that God will lead them in the right direction; they just have to have faith in Christ.

We thank each one of the students who attended this event and participated with such enthusiasm!

Wok and Roll Chinese banquet – Year 12 Hospitality🍜🥢🫔🥟🏮🥠

Wok and Roll Chinese banquet – Year 12 Hospitality🍜🥢🫔🥟🏮🥠

On Wednesday 20 March, Year 12 Hospitality students hosted a Chinese-inspired banquet for some very lucky members of staff at the College.

In the lead-up to this event, Year 12 spent time menu planning, developing recipes and designing the perfect restaurant set-up. The menu featured the following dishes:

  • Entree – San Choy Bow, Chicken Dumplings and Vegetarian Spring Rolls
  • Main – Fried Rice, Beef Noodles, Mongolian Beef, Chinese Greens, Honey chicken
  • Dessert – Mango Pancakes

The students set the mood by playing traditional Chinese music, decorating the room with paper lanterns and of course including Fortune Cookies.

Congratulations Year 12 Hospitality and Mrs Hagios on an amazing effort!

10:10 Project – Year 10

10:10 Project – Year 10

On Wednesday 13 March, Year 10 participated in Session 2 of the 10:10 Project. This season was about Love. The girls participated in multiple activities and had a lot of discussion about the importance of love within their lives. They learnt about the different types of love such as: storge, eros, philia and agape and how each type is important in order to live a full life. The 4 aspects of love being:

  1. Attraction – recognising the good of another person; seeing the inner and outer beauty of another person
  2. Desire – wanting a good for yourself through desiring union with the one you have ‘fallen in love’ with
  3. Goodwill – willing the good of the other
  4. Spousal love – Giving yourself completely to the other person, the love between husband and wife

There was discussion about what the girls should look for in a partner and the importance of going beyond physical appearances but rather love those who are caring, loving and respectful on the inside. Looks will fade but the hope is that one’s love for self and others will remain the same. It is the qualities that an individual has that makes them attractive and the way that they treat one another that matters. The session really allowed the girls to really think about what type of people they want to surround themselves with as they get older not just in terms of a life partner but rather the love that they have towards their friends and family. It was great to see the girls actively and enthusiastically participate in this session and we look forward to seeing them participate in future 10:10 sessions!

Year 10 Reflection Day

Year 10 Reflection Day

The Year 10 Reflection Day held on Tuesday 19 March was led by Catholic Mission and provided students with a series of challenging activities aimed at stepping out of their comfort zones and fostering new ways of interaction. The focus of the day was on exploring the Dignity of the Human Person and Catholic Social Teachings, aligning with the RE Curriculum program currently being assessed this term.

Throughout the day students engaged in various activities designed to deepen their understanding of the plight of disadvantaged individuals worldwide and the principles of Catholic Social Teachings. Notably, student presentations showcased their insights into the struggles faced by the “have nots” in society, demonstrating a profound understanding of specific Catholic Social Teachings.

A simulation activity centred around the concept of the 80/20 world, shed light on the injustices prevalent in society, serving as a catalyst for students to become advocates for positive change in their communities. The hope is that these Year 10 students from Domremy will be inspired to address the many challenges afflicting humanity and work towards a more just and equitable society.

Amidst the day’s activities, students were able to enjoy a pizza lunch, which hopefully served as a moment of gratitude and reflection on their own blessings. Additionally, a game of soccer on the oval using makeshift equipment reminiscent of what children in developing countries might use underscored the importance of empathy and understanding towards those less fortunate.

Overall, the Reflection Day provided students with valuable opportunities for personal growth, reflection, and action, instilling in them a sense of responsibility to advocate for justice and dignity for all members of society. I would also like to thank the Year 10 RE Team for their engagement with the day.

Mrs Jane Sullivan, Religious Education Coordinator

Year 12 Design and Technology – 2023 Shape Exhibition of HSC works

Year 12 Design and Technology – 2023 Shape Exhibition of HSC works

On Thursday 28 March, the Year 12 Design and Technology class had the opportunity to attend the 2023 Shape Exhibition of HSC works at Walsh Bay Arts Precinct. This was an amazing opportunity for our students, as it allowed them to see examples of Band 6 Design Projects.

The students started off the day by attending a seminar hosted by a Design and Technology Senior HSC marker. The seminar provided the students with insights into what occurs during the marking process, what the markers are looking for within the design project and portfolio and general tips towards success.

After the seminar, they attended a workshop where the co-founder of Espresso Display Monitor spoke about how he and his team came up with the idea of a portable display monitor. He discussed how he went from coming up with the idea to the final product. From his innovation, he now makes a 600% profit each year.

The students then viewed the Shape Exhibition which was a big highlight of their excursion. They were able to view a range of different types of HSC works, such as industrial, digital and material projects.

The experience was invaluable in ensuring the student’s future success and encouraging them along their HSC journey within Design and Technology.

Thank you to our Vinnies Sandwich Making vollies!

Thank you to our Vinnies Sandwich Making vollies!

Last Tuesday I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to participate in Saint Vincent’s sandwich making program. It was such a rewarding experience to be part of something that made a positive impact on our community. It was heart warming to see everyone come together, working side by side, to create these meals for people who may not have access to regular meals. We spent the time making over 200 sandwiches for people in need. It made me realise how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Thank you to all the volunteers who attended and to the volunteers who donated food supplies to make this happen. Overall, it was a truly meaningful experience that I felt lucky to participate in and to support those in need (Bianca, Y11).

Science and Engineering Challenge

Science and Engineering Challenge

On Friday 22 March, the Years 9 and 10 iStem classes participated in the Science
and Engineering Challenge at Sydney Olympic Park. This event is organised by the
University of Newcastle with assistance form the NSW State Government.

The students were divided into groups and assigned a number of challenges requiring problem-solving, engineering and scientific skills. There was a wide range of engineering problems in the fields of civil structures, communications, electricity, aeronautical, power generation and management.

The students showed maturity and skills in solving the challenging tasks while maintaining a supportive and friendly environment.

Year 9 iStem class reflections:

It was an eye-opening experience. We got to try new things. We had to work in groups and use our problem-solving skills to solve the challenges. It was hard initially but we learnt how to solve problems in our group over time.

It was an interesting experience where we got to think collaboratively as a team to work things out whilst still having fun with friends. At the beginning of the day, we had to make a code out of lights. Then we made an earthquake-proof tower. In the end, we came 8th, however, we were still proud of our effort.

It was a very fun experience, we worked as a team to solve problems. We came 8th.

Literature Circles

Literature Circles

Year 8 English classes have been invited into the Study Hub to participate in Literature Circles. This has been a collaborative project between the Study Hub and the English Staff.

Literature Circles involve group reading and responses to selected texts.

To complement their study of the novel, ‘Mahtab’s Story,’ Year 8 have been engaged in Literature Circles based on the theme of ‘The refugee experience’.

Students have been exposed to short stories, poems and novels centred around this main topic. Activities include group discussion questions, research, written and extension activities. All activities are based around developing students’ higher order thinking skills.

Literature Circles are a wonderful opportunity for students to engage with texts and develop their understanding of the experiences of others within our community. It will also, we hope, encourage students to borrow from the Study Hub and increase the levels of reading for pleasure within this year group.

Dragon Boating success continues for Isabella

Dragon Boating success continues for Isabella

There is no denying that Isabella Taranto (Y11) has amassed an impressive sporting CV already with her Dragon Boating. Last year we reported on her many achievements and, as a recap, you can read all about those, including her being selected to the NSW team and to the Australian team, in the links to our previous issues below.

Another year and it is safe to say it is shaping up to be another big one for Isabella!

So, what has Isabella been up to lately?

Having made the NSW team she is going to Perth in the April school holidays to race for NSW and to race in the Australian Championship and for her local teams, the Rydes and Joeys, which are teams made up of young competitors from all over Australia.

Isabella is then travelling to Italy at the end of August, to race in team vs team in the upcoming World Championships. She will be competing in one of the two junior teams selected to represent Australia and is racing in the U16, U18 and U24 events.

As if the above weren’t enough and to get ready for the year’s competitions, in two weeks’ time Isabella is competing and racing in the NSW Championships.

Awe-inspiring accomplishments! Go Isabella … Domremy is behind you all the way!!!

At Domremy we understand that students need to move beyond the four walls of our College and connect with the wider community and even globally.

That is why we encourage our students to reach out to resources available for free in our state, our nation and our world.

Last week I sent out a Compass notification inviting our senior students (Years 10,11 and 12) to join the NSW State Library, and access the very many resources available to them there.

Obtaining a NSW State Library card is a quick and easy process online by using this link https://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/research-and-collections/get-library-card

There is an enormous advantage for our senior students in being a member of the NSW State Library. Some of the benefits, and a vast many more, are:

  • Quick access to books and other collection material to use in the Library – just reserve items online ahead of your visit and they will be ready for you when you arrive.
  • Booked sessions on free computers.
  • Free access to lockers to store your bags
  • Free access to bookable study rooms
  • Print, scan and photocopy services
  • eBooks, journal and academic articles, and other research material including ProQuest, Gale, EBSCO, and JSTOR.
  • Unlimited access to 1000’s of international magazines and newspapers including the Sydney Morning Herald.
  • Online eResources to help you research your family history, study for the HSC and explore a wide range of subjects
  • Access to a network of library collections across Australia – you can use your library card to request some books and collection material from other libraries to use at the Library.
