From the Relieving Principal

Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Staff

My time as Relieving Principal at Domremy College has come to an end as Mrs McGahan returns from her Australian Catholic University Cardinal Pell Leadership Tour next Tuesday. It has been my absolute pleasure. I wish to thank all the staff and students for their wonderful hospitality and professionalism in ensuring the continuity of learning was maintained over this time. The old adage “when the cat’s away the mice will play” does not apply at Domremy Five Dock!!! 🙂

As parents I can attest to you that your daughters have a wonderfully calm campus which creates the necessary ambience for good learning. This is not the case in many of the schools I visit! Even though I was only here for three weeks, there have been so many instances where your daughters, their talents, their values, their attitudes and their capabilities have been on display and they have shown and demonstrated that Domremy students are up there with the very best.

Just yesterday I received this glowing affirmation from Macquarie University where Year 10 had experienced a campus visit. This is what the Macquarie University ambassadors had to say after the visit:

“They were easily the nicest group we’ve had this year”

 “That was the best campus experience I’ve done”

 “They were all so engaged and easy to work with!”

Great work Year 10, well done, go Domremy!!!

As a parent I hope you are feeling grateful for all that the students, staff and families have been able to achieve in 2025.

I wish all of the Domremy family a blessed and holy Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

An Advent Prayer for the Family

Heavenly Father, your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us, a great sign of your love.

Guide us as we strive to walk in that love together as a family this Advent.

As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, bring us closer to each other and to your son.

Give us the grace and strength we need every day.

Help us to always trust in you.

Come, Lord Jesus, lead all people closer to you.

Come and dispel the darkness of our world with the light of your love.

 In our Church …

Advent season began on Sunday, 30 November. 

Advent means waiting and the liturgical colour for Advent is violet, a royal purple that symbolises the Kingdom of God. Advent then is a period of waiting, of spiritual anticipation, preparation and longing for the coming of Christ and the Kingdom of God.  In this sense, Advent is a season of hope, faith, joy and peace, reflected in the lighting of the three purple and one pink candle in the Advent Wreath.

In the business of today’s world we have become used to instant gratification: you can get an answer to a Google search in under one second, you can ask Google Home to add grocery items to your shopping list as you run out, you can express most things, express post, express checkout and you can ‘tap and go’ payments for everything you purchase!  It is no wonder then that the concept of waiting, preparing and anticipating has become foreign to many of us.  And yet, this is what belief in Jesus Christ is all about.  Waiting for the coming of the Saviour and working toward the fulfilment of the Kingdom of God is the preparation we undergo as we seek eternal life with God.

In this Advent season, let us slow down and celebrate the discipline of waiting: enjoy the long sunny but cool afternoons of early summer just relaxing with friends and family, read that book you’ve been meaning to read or see that movie that you promised yourself you would.

Father, 

Let your hope arise in our hearts! 

Lift our eyes up to see that you alone are where our hope comes from. 

Help us to shake off the anxiety, discouragements, and distractions that have filled this year. 

May we pause to remember that we have hope in you. 

We invite your Spirit into this beautiful Advent season. 

Renew our sense of holy anticipation!

Social Justice in Action – Year 10 Social Justice Day

Domremy College celebrated its Year 10 Social Justice Day on last Tuesday, a significant event that brought our community together in reflection, dialogue, and action. The day was a powerful opportunity for students to engage with issues of justice and equity, deepening their understanding of how they can contribute to a fairer and more compassionate world.

We were thrilled to have Josie Charbel from St Vincent de Paul leading the program. With her energy, expertise, and passion for social justice, Josie guided our students through an inspiring and transformative experience. A highlight of the day was the series of hands‑on workshops, designed to immerse students in practical outreach and service activities. These workshops ensured that students were not only learning about justice, but actively living it – developing skills, empathy, and a commitment to making a difference.

Year 10 Social Justice Day was not only an important milestone for our students, but also a living expression of Domremy’s values: compassion, courage, and a commitment to justice.

A huge thank you to all the staff that assisted on the Year 10 Social Justice Day on Monday: Ms Cristina Peros, Ms Bridget Malloy, Ms Sarah Thompson, Ms Isabella Bechara, Ms Alyssa Intili, Ms Ivana Listro, Ms Courtney Lau, Mr Sam Shin and Mr Mark Pangilinan.

It was a wonderful day for our year 10 students and staff to put service into action!

Year 9 Reflection Day

On Tuesday this week, Year 9 students experienced their wonderful Reflection Day at Holy Name of Mary, Hunters Hill. The theme of the day was Courage with a focus on the question: What are you discussing on your journey? 

This day, inspired by the scripture passage ‘The Walk to Emmaus’ Lk 24: 13-35, invited students to reflect on their own journey throughout their time at Domremy College.

The Year 9 students were asked to focus on the following: “we need many things when we embark on a journey, some are practical, some are physical, some are emotional, spiritual.  Sometimes our needs change, mid journey…we need to be adaptable, careful, be active listeners.

Students were asked: As Year 9 students, ‘What are you discussing on your journey? Where are you going? Where is this road taking you? Where is it leading you? What courage do you need on this journey?

 Y9 Student reflection: “Year 9 had a wonderful day full of activities during Reflection Day at Holy Name of Mary, Hunters Hill. Through the days’ theme on “Courage” we were able to reflect on our obstacles courageously which allowed us to share, connect and build relationships with our peers and teachers.” 

 I would like to thank all the staff who attended the day made a significant impact on the successful running of the day: Ms Isabella Bechara, Ms Cristina Peros, Ms Alyssa Intili, Ms Sylvia Bath, Ms Katherine Hoban, Ms Maria Xafelis, Ms Mark Pangilinan, Ms Marilyn Fiamengo, Ms Meryl Litherland and Mr Phillip Romachko.

From the REC – In our Community … Australian Catholic Youth Festival

In our Community …

The Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF) is a national gathering of Catholic young people established by the Australian Bishops more than ten years ago.

Run over three days, the Festival provides young people from all across Australia with the opportunity to come together to connect, deepen their relationship with Jesus, be empowered to live their faith in the world and experience the breadth of the Church in Australia. 

The Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne hosted the ACYF from 30 November – 2 December 2025. 

Year 10 Domremy students Sarah, Jane, Areti, Leianna, Lara and Mary accompanied by Ms Ivana Liistro, were blessed with the opportunity to journey to Melbourne as Pilgrims of hope for the ACYF. Representing Domremy along with 400 students from SCS, the 3 days consisted of informative yet inspiring workshops and talks, as well as many stalls.

“My name Is Sarah, I am 15 years old and one of the lucky selected students who attend the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Melbourne. These past 3 days consisted of workshops, talks, a Pilgrimage walk, singing and dancing to worship music but most importantly the opportunity to grow closer to God and not only understand him but myself also. These workshops included prayer experiences, expositions, bishops’ exchanges, adoration and many more choices. There were also many masses which allowed prayer and alone time with Jesus, as well as a mass with 92 priests and 32 bishops!. The community that I encountered was incredible, I flew back from Sydney with so many long lasting friendships and I could not be more grateful. This experience deepened my relationship with Jesus more than I ever expected it to, I have never felt more close to him than I do now. I am missing Melbourne like crazy and would love to go back for a few more days with the community I shared my experiences with, the opportunities I received, and the ability to deepen and explore my relationship with Jesus. I highly recommend anyone to take part in this adventure, as Jesus said ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me’. Matthew 25:35.”

Congratulations Pink Heroes! 🩷

A few issues back we reported on the phenomenal effort during Pink Week.

A special shout out and huge Congratulations are again warranted for all our Domremy community pink heroes.

We are so proud of everyone’s efforts and generosity, proving that unity and hard work lead to success.

The amount of $11,835.50 raised, will go towards targeted world class research – truly game changing.

Ethics Club and the Middle School Ethics Olympiad

This semester, Domremy’s Ethics Club has focussed its lunchtime conversations around the set cases for the 2025 Middle School Ethics Olympiad. This year’s cases have led to really thoughtful discussions from a variety of perspectives. Our girls have particularly enjoyed discussing the ethical implications of naming your child, bullfighting, the immoral actions of artists, civilian intelligence in war, bullying and the use of AI in the classroom. 

We entered two teams into this year’s Middle School Olympiad, made up of students in Year 9 who have not yet had the opportunity to formally study Ethics. These students prepared thoroughly for their first time in this event and enthusiastically learned about new concepts and ethical frameworks. Both teams successfully and respectfully explored the set cases through a variety of lenses and considered perspectives from different cultures, genders, ages and experiences.

It is with great pleasure that we congratulate all involved and, in particular, our ‘Black’ Team (Aria, Aoife, Vittoria and Lillian) who were awarded an Honourable Mention in this year’s competition.

A Congratulations to our Senior Rock Band (𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝔸𝕟𝕥𝕚𝕔𝕤) and Year 10 Rock Band (𝔸𝕟𝕕𝕣𝕠𝕞𝕖𝕕𝕒) on their killer performances at Joey‘s Battle of the Bands. These girls absolutely 𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 and we are so proud of your performance! Special thank you to Ms Price and Mr Adams for their work with our students!

For all our U16 students – Social media age restrictions: Get-ready guide for under-16s : download your digital memories

From 10 December 2025, many social media platforms won’t be allowed to let Australians under 16 create or keep an account. 

From the Office of Sally Sitou MP, Federal Member for Reid: “Social Media Delay – Online Briefing”

Sally will be hosting an online briefing for local parents regarding the new ‘social media delay’ for under-16s coming into effect in December.

Parents will have the opportunity to hear from the Minister for Communications, Anika Wells, and also a representative of the eSafety commission regarding these changes, and what they mean for parents and children.

They will also have the opportunity to submit questions ahead of time.

CCSP video by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg – Is your family ready for the Social Media Delay on 10 December?

The Council of Catholic School Parents (CCSP) NSW/ACT asked Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, one of Australia’s leading psychologists, author and broadcaster, to help educators and parents and carers with children under 16 prepare for the upcoming changes to social media platforms. In this 30-minute video, Dr Carr-Gregg explains what social media is, how the age restrictions will work, why it’s happening and how it will affect families and schools.

The CCSP invites parents and educators to take time out for half an hour to watch this video so that they understand and are equipped to handle the impact of the changes on their families and students. The video can be watched on the CCSP’s website here.  ‘The Social Media Delay: What It Means for Parents and Schools’.
