Dear Parents, Carers, Staff, Students and Friends,

Welcome to Term 3!

We have had a vibrant, busy but smooth start to Term 3, with our school community hitting the ground running from day one.

While students enjoyed a well-deserved break, many of our Year 12 students and teachers were hard at work throughout the holidays. They dedicated time to intensive workshops to refine their skills and consolidate their knowledge ahead of the HSC Trial Examinations, which begin next week. This commitment to preparation pays dividends, and our Year 12s are entering these crucial exams well-prepared, confident, and supported. We wish them all the very best as they tackle the trials!

We have had two weeks of planning for the future and celebrating the many talents and gifts of the young women in our care.

Subject Selections for Years 9 & 11 2027: We officially kicked off the subject selection process for our Year 8 students. Additionally, our Year 10 students along with their parentsattended subject selection interviews at the College. This is always an exciting period as students begin to tailor their learning journeys toward their unique interests and strengths.
SCS Winter Championships Grand Final – Senior Girls Soccer: Yesterday was an absolute triumph for our school community as we celebrated our Senior Girls Soccer Team competing in the SCS Winter Championships Grand Final and winning the Grand Final against Marist Sisters Woolwich. To ensure our girls had the ultimate advantage, our Years 10, 11 and 12 students travelled to Lambert Park, filling the stands with a wall of noise, school pride and tireless cheering. On the pitch, our girls were nothing short of brilliant. Playing with fierce competitive spirit, tactical discipline and the seamless cohesion of a well-rehearsed unit, they controlled the game with brilliant possession from start to finish. This victory is a testament to the months of training, grit and unwavering teamwork these young women have poured into their season. Watching them lift the trophy surrounded by theircheering peers was a proud moment for our entire school. Congratulations to the players, their coaches and our incredible student supporters who made yesterday an unforgettable celebration of excellence and community spirit!

Student Leadership into 2027

Leadership calls us to “be the change”, much like the gentle transition between seasons. True leadership is a continuous process that cultivates service, active listening, compassion, and humility, while maintaining a strong, meaningful presence within our community. With our eyes set on the future, we recently spent valuable time discerning our student leadership for 2027. We conducted interviews for our 2027 School Captain and Vice-Captain roles and listened to inspiring, thoughtful speeches from our Year 11 candidates. It is always a privilege to hear our young women speak with such vision, passion, and commitment to serving our College. The depth of character and leadership potential within this cohort is immensely impressive, making the final decisions a tough task. Whether selected for a particular position or not, we are well placed with a 2027 Year 12 cohort with strong and impressive leadership qualities.

HSC Trial Examinations

Our Year 12 HSC Trial Examinations commence this coming Monday, 3 August, and will run through to Monday, 17 August.

This is a significant time for our Year 12 cohort, and we know how hard they have worked in preparation. We wish each of our students the very best as they enter this important phase of their academic journey. May their efforts be richly rewarded, and may they approach every paper with confidence and calm.

It is HSC Showcase Season and this week the exceptional talents of our HSC Drama and Textiles students took centre stage. The sheer quality, creativity and dedication on display were outstanding. The pursuit of excellence was clearly on display. Congratulations to all our students and staff involved for putting together such incredible work which truly shines.

Year 12 Drama Showcase: On Wednesday, 29 July, our Drama students performed their major works for family and friends. Their creativity, courage, and commitment were on full display, and their performances were absolutely outstanding. They will now continue to refine their pieces ahead of the official HSC examinations in a few weeks.

Textiles & Design Showcase: Last night, our Textiles and Design students showcased their major works, which were equally exceptional and reflected hundreds of hours of intricate craft and dedication.

To our Year 12 students – you’ve got this. We believe in you, and we are cheering you on every step of the way!

A Message of Support & Gratitude – We keep all of our Year 12 students in our thoughts and prayers as they embark on these examinations.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated teachers who have guided, prepared, and supported our young women with such expertise and care throughout the year. Their constant belief in our students makes all the difference.

Important Update: eSafety Commissioner Advisory

Domremy College and Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) take the online safety and well-being of our students and staff with the utmost seriousness.

You may be aware of the recent advisory issued by the eSafety Commissioner regarding the misuse and unauthorised harvesting of student and staff imagery online. We want to reassure our school community that both our College Leadership Team and SCS are treating this matter with high priority.

SCS is currently reviewing the details of this advisory to assess its full implications and determine a clear, consistent approach across all system schools. We are awaiting further guidance from SCS on this matter and will loop back to our community with a more detailed update once that advice has been finalised.

2027 Nagle Education Alliance of Australia (NEAA) Student Conference

Next fortnight, a delegation of seven Year 10 students, accompanied by Ms Caroline Morizzi (Religious Education Coordinator), Ms Isabella Soueid (Youth Minister), and myself, will travel to Perth for the Nagle Education Alliance of Australia (NEAA) Student Conference. This conference is held biannually.

Hosted at Iona Presentation College, the conference will bring together students from Presentation schools across the nation. This is a wonderfully enriching experience for our young women, offering them a deeper understanding of our Presentation charism, the legacy of Nano Nagle, and the opportunity to build lasting connections with peers nationwide. We look forward to sharing their insights and experiences upon our return.

On a final note…

A reminder that next Monday 3 August is a pupil free day (not for Year 12s who sit their first Trial exam), to enable our Teaching Staff to complete their Professional Learning Day. All students are back at school on Tuesday 4 August.

Religious Life and Mission

Mrs Morizzi and the Faith and Mission team outlined our social justice focus for the term. Students were encouraged to get involved in the Winter Appeal, Sandwich Making, and supporting the Charitable Works Fund (CWF), which aids vital agencies across the Archdiocese of Sydney.

Celebrating Literature and Creativity

Isabella (Year 12) introduced our upcoming Book Week celebrations (22–28 August), centred around the theme “A Symphony of Stories.” Highlights to look forward to include:

Author Visits: Stage 4 and 5 students will hear from acclaimed authors Sue Whiting and Allison Tait.
Dress-Up Day & Fundraiser: On Wednesday, August 26, students can come dressed as a favourite book character for a gold coin donation to support CWF.
Competitions: Students are invited to submit creative writing, artwork, or enter the Origami Club Cancer Council fundraiser in the Maker Space.

Inquiry and Enterprise Update – Real-World Impact

Tahlia and Georgia (Year 12) presented updates on our bustling Inquiry and Enterprise programs, celebrating our students’ analytical and problem-solving talents:

Enterprise & Problem Solving: Year 10 Commerce students are preparing business pitches for a “Shark Tank” style event in partnership with Macquarie University, while Global Connections classes recently engaged in a Model UN simulation tackling microplastics.
Academic Excellence: Special congratulations were extended to our Da Vinci Decathlon participants and our Senior Ethics Olympiad team, who earned an Honourable Mention competing against top regional schools.
STEM Initiatives: From the Scripting Society’s ocean video game challenge and the “Seeds of Science” week activities to a real-world design partnership with Gamuda for the Five Dock Metro arcade, our students continue to push boundaries.

The assembly concluded with an inspiring video showcasing our Year 12 cohort’s sporting achievements, followed by the school song.

A gentle reminder to all students—especially Year 11 and 12 students preparing for upcoming exams—that the Study Hub is open daily after school, offering tutor support and extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Let’s make Term 3 a term of growth, community, and excellence!

Going Above and Beyond: Year 12 Holiday Workshops in Action

While the school grounds are usually quiet during the break, our classrooms have been buzzing with energy, purpose, and collaboration. Over the holidays, many of our dedicated Year 12 students stepped back onto campus for intensive holiday revision workshops, targeted exam masterclasses, and hands-on major project sessions.

Behind every session was a team of passionate teachers giving up their own break to ensure our senior cohort feels confident, supported, and fully prepared for the road ahead.

What Took Place Behind the Scenes: The holiday sessions offered students structured, high-impact learning opportunities away from the pressure of the standard daily schedule:

Focused Exam Preparation: Breaking down past assessment papers, deconstructing tricky questions, and sharpening exam techniques in subjects like English, Mathematics, and the Sciences.
Targeted Feedback: Small-group environments allowed teachers to provide personalized guidance, helping students identify knowledge gaps and refine their written responses.
Major Project Progress: Specialized workshop hours gave practical and creative arts students uninterrupted studio time to refine Visual Arts bodies of work, Design & Technology prototypes, and major research projects.

From the Religious Education Coordinator … In our Church

The Feast Day of Saints Joachim and Anne

On 26 July, The Church celebrated the lives of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, Jesus’ grandparents – Mary’s parents. In the Scriptures, Matthew and Luke furnish a legal family history of Jesus, tracing ancestry to show that Jesus is the culmination of great promises. Not only is his mother’s family neglected, we also know nothing factual about them except that they existed. Even the names “Joachim” and “Anne” come from a legendary source written more than a century after Jesus died.

The strong character of Mary in making decisions, her continuous practice of prayer, her devotion to the laws of her faith, her steadiness at moments of crisis, and her devotion to her relatives, all indicate a close-knit, loving family that looked forward to the next generation even while retaining the best of the past.

In 2021 Pope Francis instituted a Church-wide celebration of a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. He was moved to establish it not just because of the importance of grandparents and the elderly, a theme on which he has often spoken, but particularly because of the neglect and isolation so many grandparents and seniors experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel restrictions, nursing-home policies and fear for their safety, prevented their being visited and embraced by their loved ones.

Pope Francis hoped that, on this day, grandchildren will visit their grandparents, perhaps even sharing with them a copy of his letter, and that parish families will have special Masses thanking God for the gift of grandparents, praying for them, and entrusting to him those who have died, particularly during the pandemic.

In Pope Leo’s Angelus address, he said the day’s theme in 2026 is taken from the words of the prophet Isaiah: ‘I will never forget you’ (49:15).

‘Together, let us give thanks to the Lord for the gift that the elderly are to the Church and society,’ he said in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican.

‘Let us also commit ourselves to respecting and valuing the precious role they play, and to ensuring that they always receive the care, attention and assistance they deserve.’

In his previously released message for World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, Pope Leo reminded Catholics that the promise not to forget should shape how each of us treats the older adults in our lives.

‘The painful feeling of being forgotten is, unfortunately, shared by many people, and among them are quite a few elderly people,’ Pope Leo wrote, echoing his predecessor’s reasons for establishing the day in 2021.

You who nurtured Mary in her childhood and guided her towards holiness,

We pray for their well-being, that they may find comfort in their later years,

and that their wisdom and experience may be valued by all.

May they be surrounded by love, respect, and the support of their families, friends and community.

We also pray that we may be inspired by your example of faithfulness,

and that we may learn to cherish and care for our elders,

with the same love and devotion that you showed to Mary.

May their lives be a testament to the love of God and a beacon of hope for all.

May these tokens remind them of God’s steadfast presence, the prayers of their college community, and the strength found in faith during this important time.

Dear Lord,

We ask for your blessing on our students undertaking their Trial HSC Examinations over the coming weeks.

Grant them the confidence they deserve from their years of diligent study.

Grant them the ability to comprehend questions and effectively plan and articulate their responses.

May they be enriched by the gifts of the Holy Spirit – Wisdom, Understanding, Fortitude and Knowledge.

We have been invited by the Mayor of The City of Canada Bay to attend the Our Lady of the Assumption Procession which takes place as part of Ferragosto on Sunday 16 August.

This is a wonderful opportunity to gather as a Domremy community.

We would like to meet as a Domremy group and process together and we would love as many families to process with us as possible.

It’s Year 12 HSC Showcase season once again!

Celebrating Creativity at the 2026 Major Textiles Project Showcase

This week our Textiles and Design students proudly showcased their 2026 Major Textiles Projects, celebrating months of creativity, perseverance and exceptional craftsmanship. The evening brought together students, families, friends and staff to recognise the remarkable dedication required to transform an initial idea into a sophisticated and highly personal textile creation.

Each project represents far more than the finished piece on display. Behind every garment, quilt and textile artwork are countless hours of research, design development, experimentation, problem-solving and technical refinement. Throughout the year, students challenged themselves to master new construction techniques, refine their creative vision and overcome the inevitable setbacks that accompany every ambitious design process.

This year’s showcase highlighted an extraordinary breadth of inspiration and creativity. Students drew influence from historical fashion, contemporary performance, literature, music, film and popular culture, each interpreting their inspiration in a unique and innovative way.

Visitors were treated to a stunning collection of projects including:

concert wear inspired by Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer and their Youngblood album, translating music into wearable storytelling through symbolism, tailoring and textile techniques;
flowing gowns influenced by Ancient Greek drapery, Mamma Mia! and modern bridal couture, incorporating delicate fabrics and intricate embellishment;
elegant 1950s Dior New Look cocktail dresses exploring couture construction, corsetry and sophisticated embellishment and fabric manipulation;
romantic formal gowns inspired by a grandmother’s debutante gown, reimagining a treasured family heirloom through contemporary couture, structured corsetry and timeless elegance;
beautifully crafted textile artworks inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, combining quilting, embroidery, appliqué, ribbon work and beading to reinterpret Regency-era themes through contemporary textile art;
an ethereal wearable art gown inspired by Falkor from The NeverEnding Story, featuring iridescent organza, hand-crafted scales and luxurious faux fur;
contemporary menswear inspired by Hedi Slimane’s Dior Homme collections, showcasing expert tailoring, slim silhouettes and innovative surface manipulation; and
theatrical costumes inspired by Glinda from Wicked, designed with quick costume changes, dramatic silhouettes and sparkling stage embellishments in mind.

Collectively, these projects demonstrated not only technical excellence but also the students’ ability to research, innovate and solve complex design challenges while developing a distinctive creative voice.

A special acknowledgement must be made to Ms Wagner, whose passion and commitment have helped shape many of these students since they first entered the Textiles classroom in Year 9. Over the years she has patiently guided them from learning the fundamentals of sewing and construction through to mastering advanced textile techniques and sophisticated design processes. More importantly, she has been a constant source of encouragement, inspiration and support. The confidence, resilience and craftsmanship evident throughout this exhibition are a testament to the countless hours she has invested in her students.

We would also like to sincerely thank the families and friends who have supported our students throughout this journey. Your encouragement, patience and understanding, whether through late-night sewing sessions, helping source materials or simply providing reassurance when challenges arose have been invaluable.

Congratulations to every student on an outstanding achievement. These projects represent not only months of dedication but years of developing skills, confidence and creativity. The standard of work displayed this year has been truly exceptional, and we are incredibly proud of what our students have accomplished. We look forward to seeing where their creativity, passion and talents take them in the future.

A Masterclass in Icing

On the first day of term, Year 9 Food Technology students were treated to a hands-on cake and cupcake decorating workshop with Sofia Sgroi from Baked by Sof. Students learned professional techniques for piping, smoothing, and adding creative flourishes to their sweet creations. They left with two beautifully decorated cupcakes and inspiration for their upcoming cake decorating assessment task. A huge thank you to Sofia for sharing her expertise and inspiring our budding bakers!

Year 8 Italian classes cook with Piatto Perfetto

From cracking eggs into flour wells to spinning out perfect pasta strands, our Year 8 team recently mastered the art of traditional pasta making. As Italians ourselves, making pasta gave us a strong connection with our culture. It showed us the importance of keeping family traditions. Throughout the incursion, we learnt authentic techniques and vocabulary that have been passed down through generations. While working together we created our own fresh pasta from scratch. It was a fun, hands on experience that deepened our appreciation for Italian cuisine and the rich cultural heritage behind every delicious pasta dish. We are grateful for this opportunity, which allowed us to celebrate our culture and create lasting memories. (8.4 – Aurora and Sienna)

Making fresh pasta was such a fun and memorable experience as now I know how to make pasta from scratch and can show my parents. It was very yummy with the fresh red sauce! (8.6 – Olivia)

From the Year 8 teachers of Italian, we commend the five Year 8 Italian classes on their participation and full immersion on the day, from using the language to following the instructions. We hope they have learnt a very important part of Italian culture – enjoying cooking and eating!!

Year 9 Inspired by Writer-in-Residence Sarah Ayoub

Year 9 enjoyed hearing from our writer-in-residence Sarah Ayoub on Monday. Sarah is the author of a number of titles including “The Yearbook Committee” and “Hate is Such a Strong Word”, as well as a journalist and academic. Sarah discussed a number of techniques to assist students in improving their writing. We look forward to students utilising these techniques in the future.

A stellar holiday of badminton achievements – Go Tiffany!

Huge congratulations to Tiffany (Y8) for a stellar holiday of badminton!

At the U15 National Championships in Melbourne, her team placed an impressive 4th nationally!

Individually, Tiffany took out the U15 Girls’ Singles winner consolation title & reached the U15 girls’ doubles quarterfinals.

She backed this up by finishing runner-up in the B-grade Women’s Singles at the 2026 NSW Autumn Open.

St Joan of Arc Parish, Haberfield – Invitation to Celebrate Mary as the Queen of Heaven

All students and their families are warmly invited to join the celebrations for the Feast of Mary, Mother and Queen, taking place on Sunday 23 August at St Joan of Arc Parish, Haberfield.

The celebration will commence with 9:00 am Mass, followed by the Rosary, a procession, and a shared community lunch. This special occasion offers a wonderful opportunity for our parish and school communities to gather in faith as we honour Mary, our Mother and Queen.
