Welcome Back to a New Academic Year!

Welcome to the new academic year! We are thrilled to see both familiar faces and new students joining our school community. This year promises to be full of opportunities and growth. To our new students, we extend a warm welcome! You are now part of a supportive and vibrant community, ready to help you thrive.

This year, we encourage everyone to embrace challenges as they come. Each challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Remember to set boundaries and take care of your well-being; a balanced life is key to success.

Parents, you are an essential part of this learning journey. We believe in a strong partnership between school and home. Together, we can create an environment where every student can excel. A holistic education, nurturing not just academic skills but also the personal development of each student, spiritually, emotionally and socially, is at the forefront of what we do.

Information Evenings

Our Year 7 Welcome and Meet your Homeroom Teacher and Stage 4 (Years 7 & 8) Assessment Information Evening earlier this week received a fantastic response from parents, with strong attendance and positive feedback. We are grateful for the affirmations and support we have received from our parent community.

Our Stage 5 (Years 9 & 10) Assessment & Year 11 Assessment Information Evening is scheduled for Wednesday 19 February – Stage 5 at 6.00pm – 6.45pm and Year 11 at 7.00pm – 7.45pm. We look forward to meeting parents at this evening next week.

HSC 2024 High Achievers Assembly

I am filled with immense pride and gratitude at how the Class of 2024 distinguished itself academically but also in its commitment to excellence in all endeavours. I reported at the end of last year on the exceptional results of this cohort, and these are contained again in this issue. 

We were reminded of these at our High Achievers Assembly on Wednesday this week, when our HSC High and Distinguished Achievers returned to the College. Our 2024 College Dux, Alannah Griffith, delivered a beautiful address at our whole school assembly, imparting the valuable lessons and tips she experienced on her HSC journey, to our student body. This was followed by an inspirational address by Sohpia Ghantous, our 2024 College Vice Captain and 2024 Australian Olympic Change-Maker Award Recipient, whose message came across loud and clear to those listening – “Be the change. Power the change. When an opportunity arises, seize it.Be fast in seizing opportunity, strive to reach new heights and be strong in the face of adversity. We can reach excellence when we work hard and we work together.” You can read these addresses which have been reproduced later in this Newsletter.

Year 12 Student Leadership 2025 College Theme

Our Year 12 Leaders unveiled our College Theme for 2025, “The storyline is yours … What role will you play?”

This theme celebrates the unique potential within each girl to shape her own Domremy journey. It encourages self-reflection on purpose, values, and the impact she can make. It promotes embracing responsibility, taking initiative, and actively participating in our community, rather than passively observing.

By owning her choices, overcoming challenges, and seizing opportunities, the girls  collectively build a stronger, more inclusive community where everyone belongs and contributes. Whether she leads, mentors, creates, or supports, every role is vital as they move forward with purpose, like pilgrims of hope, to build a place where everyone thrives.

On a final note….

We had a beautiful Opening Mass today, attended by our Presentation Sisters, Margaret Barclay, Susan Miller, Cecilia Wiltshire and Lynne Crilley. We thank them for always making themselves available to us and for their constant support. Thank you also to Fr Roland (Chaplain to the St Christophorus German-speaking Chaplaincy at Croydon) for celebrating a beautiful Opening Mass.

The College Leadership Team has commenced Primary School Visits, visiting our feeder Catholic Primary Schools with some of our Senior Student Leaders and Year 8 students as College ambassadors, sharing details about their fabulous experiences here at Domremy. You can read in this issue a lovely reflection from two of our Year 8 students who have been doing a wonderful job with our feeder schools who are all part of our greater Domremy College community.

At this time of year Applications for Enrolment are coming in and these visits assist families with their enquiries. If you know of family or friends considering a high school education for their daughters, please extend an invitation to them to join us for Open Day on Sunday 9 March, and/or call our Enrolment Officer about submitting an Application for Enrolment. Applications for Year 7 2027 are filling quickly.

Welcome Back to a New School Year!

As we embark on a new academic year, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to the Domremy family for welcoming me into the community. I am excited to introduce myself as the new Acting Assistant Principal of Domremy College. It is truly an honor to be part of such a vibrant, dedicated and faith filled community, and I look forward to working alongside our incredible staff, students, and families to continue fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.

I have had the privilege of working in three SCS Secondary Schools where I have had experience in a range of leadership roles that have had a significant influence on the person, educator and leader I am today. I am a very passionate and dedicated educational leader who strives for excellence in teaching and learning. As a Catholic leader, I aim to guide, shape and mould the lives of young women by providing authentic and real world learning experiences that allow them to thrive in our ever changing world. I am a lifelong learner who is committed to creating a strong culture of learning, improving student learning outcomes and wellbeing. 

As we begin a new school year, let us aim to work in partnership to support the young women of Domremy achieve their personal best, as they strive for excellence in all that they pursue. Our Holy Father Pope Francis encourages the faithful to see life’s challenges as opportunities for new growth saying, “At times, life presents great challenges. Through them, the Lord calls us anew to a conversion that can make his grace more evident in our lives, in order that we may share his holiness (Heb 12:10). At other times, we need only find a more perfect way of doing what we are already doing: There are inspirations that tend solely to perfect in an extraordinary way the ordinary things we do in life.”

During this Jubilee year let us continue to be beacons of hope shining our light into the darkness.

Opening Mass for 2025 school year

Fr Roland (Chaplain to the St Christophorus German-speaking Chaplaincy at Croydon) led our community in a beautiful Opening Mass on Friday 14 February. We also welcomed the Sisters from our Presentation community, Sr Margaret, Sr Lynne, Sr Cecilia and Sr Susan.

Each new year is a cause for celebration and each day presents a wealth of opportunities, experiences and challenges as the “ Storyline is yours… what role will you play?” makes a positive impression and impact here at the College. As we face our daily challenges and struggles, we also travel along our spiritual journey; growing closer to God through trusting in him during times of adversity.

As part of the tradition of the school, we welcomed the new Year 7 students, students who were new to the College in Years 8-12 and all new staff members. All those new to our community received a special blessing. As a Catholic School, it is deep in our identity to welcome in the new year as an Eucharistic community. It is the Opening Mass every year that sets the tone for Spirituality in the school, encouraging all to bring the presence of Jesus into our community.

Special thanks must go to all students who participated in the ministry roles in the Mass, especially to our readers and student leaders who assisted. Thanks also must go to our choir and musicians led by Mrs Zapulla and Mr Magson. The choir were able to elevate the beauty of the occasion even further through their beautiful singing, particularly of our school song, ‘La Verite’.

Jubilee 2025 – Pilgrims of Hope

Every 25 years the church celebrates a Jubilee year which is a time of renewal.  

This Jubilee year, Pope Francis invites each of us to be Pilgrims of Hope. 

The Jubilee recognises the power of communication and the way in which it conveys hope.

 The Church reflects, “to be pilgrims of hope” we need to communicate 

the Gospel of Christ through our words and actions. 

Communication is about bringing people together on a shared journey 

through stories and images that connect us. 

Communication is also about giving voice to the voiceless on the outskirts of humankind.

Through truth filled messages we can build a more just and peaceful world

and uphold the dignity of all people.” 

Sydney Catholic Schools Theme for 2025 – “May we always seek what is good, true and beautiful.”

Each year, a theme is created for Sydney Catholic Schools that is centred on Pope Francis’ message for youth and a Scripture passage for WYD reflection. This year the World Youth Day Theme is “You Also Are My Witnesses, Because You Have Been With Me,” (John 15:27).  The chosen Scripture for 2025 focuses on how the baptised are called to be witnesses in the modern world, a call that is also applicable to all SCS staff, students and families. Part of being a witness is the call to seek and promote what is good, true and beautiful in creation. This is core to Catholic education and a matter for rejoicing, especially in the Jubilee Year of 2025.

The chosen image for the 2025 theme comes from the Clancy Prize Religious Art Exhibition 2024, capturing the essence of the Jubilee theme, Saints and Pilgrims of Hope. This resonates with the broader theme of World Youth Day, “Pilgrims of Hope,” and was designed to inspire students from Years 7 to 11 to explore and deepen their spiritual knowledge. By drawing inspiration from the lives of saints in the Catholic Church, students translated their understanding into compelling artworks.

In Response to the WYD theme, our Sydney Catholic School action is:

On Thursday 13 February, we welcomed back on campus our 2024 HSC High Achievers for the High Achievers Assembly and Morning Tea.

Our High Achievers were celebrated in the presence of the entire school in a packed Brenda Quinn Hall. Each were presented with their awards and certificates. Our Principal, Mrs McGahan addressed the Asembly. This was followed by inspirational speeches by both the 2024 College Dux, Allanah Griffith and the 2024 Australian Olympic Change Maker Award Recipient, Sophia Ghantous. Student Leadership College Theme for 2025 – “The storyline is yours … What role will you play?”

Life is often compared to a book, a film, or a grand stage production. We enter this world without a script or predetermined role, yet we find ourselves swept into a story that unfolds before us.

At Domremy, some students choose to lead, stepping confidently into the spotlight, while others work behind the scenes to ensure the show goes on smoothly. Some embrace adventure, and others focus on crafting stability and wisdom. There are also those who sit in the audience, watching events unfold and waiting for the right moment to step forward.

The truth is, this is not a story written by someone else. There is no director dictating your every move or narrator deciding your fate. The story is in your hands; the stage is yours to command. The key question is: When the storyline unfolds, what role will you play?

This theme highlights the individuality of each student and the power to guide one’s own path during the school experience. Stepping into your role encourages self-reflection about your purpose, choices, actions, and values, enabling you to make a meaningful impact within the College community. It calls for responsibility, personal agency, and self-determination, inviting you to be an active participant at Domremy rather than just a follower or observer.

By taking ownership of our choices, pushing past limitations, and seizing opportunities, we can foster a collective understanding that everyone has their part to play in building a stronger sense of community and experience for all. Whether you are a leader, mentor, creative thinker, or supporter, every role matters. Together, like pilgrims of hope, we move forward with purpose, creating a space where everyone belongs and contributes.

As the storyline unfolds, we encourage Domremy girls to ask themselves: What role will I play in the Domremy community?

Year Coordinator’s Welcome to Year 12 – The Class of 2025 – The Final Chapter Begins!  

As the new school year unfolds, we welcome  Year 12 students as they embark on their final year at the College. This year marks an exciting chapter, filled with opportunities, challenges, and memories waiting to be made. It’s a year where friendships are strengthened, futures are shaped, and legacies are left behind.  

In Week 1, we also unveiled our inspiring College theme for the year: “The storyline is yours… What role will you play?” This powerful message resonated throughout the College, encouraging every student to reflect on their journey and the impact they wish to have.  

Year 12, the pen is in your hands. Whether you choose to lead, inspire, learn, or uplift those around you, this year is your opportunity to play a role that not only shapes your own story but also leaves a meaningful mark on our College community.  

As you navigate the highs and lows of this final school year, remember that each moment is a chance to grow, each challenge is an opportunity to learn, and every choice contributes to the narrative you create.

Year 7 Coordinator’s Welcome to Year 7 – The Class of 2030 – The First Chapter Begins!

It is with great pleasure that I write on Year 7’s successful beginning to their schooling years here at Domremy College. As Year 7 Coordinator, my role is to oversee the day to day teaching and learning of your daughters. We play a fundamental role in ensuring the successful implementation of Domremy’s Pastoral Care Program fostering the idea of combining a growth mindset with mindfulness to establish positive learning habits.

The Class of 2030 have shown immense promise as they settled into successful  habits, demonstrating sustained application, academic rigour and set goals towards achieving their personal best. The first two weeks have been a busy time full of opportunities and possibilities, allowing the vast majority of Year 7 students to find ways they can positively contribute to our school community, such as try outs for our sporting teams, auditioning for the College Musical and  ‘Belonging Day’. 

Orientation Week proved to be jam packed and students engaged in a ‘Digital Circuit’ where Year 7 was led by our Year 10 student leaders and taught things like how to use specific applications on their laptops and email etiquette. I would like to extend my gratitude  to Mrs Silva and Mrs Smit for coordinating the day and allowing students the opportunity to engage and apply these vital skills. 

Year 7 participated in a ‘Belonging Day’- a  pastoral initiative which afforded them the opportunity to connect with their ‘Big Sisters’ and peers. This allowed students to foster and develop their spiritual and social development. Students created memories that I’m sure in years to come will be fondly reflected on. Students are to be commended for embracing opportunities to develop their faith and bonds with their peers. A special thanks must be given to Miss Ribeiro for her tireless efforts in making the Mass a reflective experience. Also, thank you to Mrs Kshatriya and the Year 7 Pastoral team for their positive energy, support and assistance throughout the week. 

The Year 7 ‘Meet and Greet’ Welcome evening gave parents the opportunity to meet the Year 7 Homeroom teachers. We believe that a strong partnership between parents and the College is essential for the success of our students. Homeroom teachers and parents had the opportunity to meet and learn about the expectations that students were given and the importance of upholding them in order for our students to achieve their personal best. I hope that the opportunity allowed you to see the dedication and care of the wonderful staff.  

I ask Year 7 to not sit back and let your schooling years pass you by. The more you contribute to the life of Domremy College, the more you will get out of your years spent here. I am constantly encouraged when I hear teachers tell me that the Year 7 students have already put up their hand to get involved.

To the parents who were just as excited and anxious as the students: I hope you are proud of what your daughters’ have accomplished in the first two weeks, no matter how big or small. Your trust in myself and the College Leadership team enables us to work collaboratively in ensuring the best for your daughters.

Year Coordinator’s Welcome to Year 11

As we step into 2025, Year 11 marks an important milestone in each student’s academic journey—a time of growth, responsibility, and opportunity. This year, we will be placing a strong focus on the power of small but significant actions: getting the little things right. Whether it’s taking pride in the way we present ourselves, showing respect in our interactions, or demonstrating dedication to our studies, these seemingly small choices pave the way for long-term success.

It has been wonderful to witness so many of our young women wearing their uniforms with pride, embracing their new subjects with enthusiasm, and immersing themselves in the wealth of opportunities that Year 11 has to offer. One of the most rewarding aspects of this year is the opportunity to step into leadership roles, and many of our students have already begun to do so through the ‘Big Sister’ program. By mentoring and guiding our Year 7 students, they are helping to create a strong sense of belonging within our school community – offering support, guidance, and a friendly face for those just beginning their high school journey.

Throughout the year, students will have countless opportunities to engage with the school community, challenge themselves academically and personally, and demonstrate the leadership skills we know they possess. Year 11 is a crucial time for learning – not just in the classroom but in developing resilience, responsibility, and independence. It is a year to embrace new experiences, make mistakes, reflect, and grow. Establishing strong habits now will ensure that when the HSC year begins, students are well-prepared to take on the challenges ahead with confidence and determination.

As the senior members of the school, our Year 11 students are now role models for younger students, setting the tone for the values and culture of our community. We encourage them to lead by example, to support one another, and to seize every opportunity that comes their way.

We have received a number of parent/carer enquiries about the letters or numbers used in Compass to identify which class students are in; for instance: 7ENGE = Year 7 English (Developing Newman) Class; 7MATN = Year 7 Mathematics (Newman) Class; 7SCIR = Year 7 Science (Mixed ability) Class; 8SCI3 = Year 8 Science (Mixed ability) Class.

Welcome to the Study Hub in 2025!!

We are continuously working to support student literacy and engage students in reading with many initiatives and programs to entice reluctant readers.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, here are a few of the beginning of year competitions open to Domremy students.

A number of books have been wrapped to appeal to student curiosity and the girls are encouraged to ‘Date a Book.’

Girls need to choose one of the books, with a hint sticker on the cover, unwrap the book, borrow the book in the usual manner and then write a 50 word book review or a love letter to a character from the novel. Reviews and letters are to be posted on Google Classroom by Friday 28 February using the following. Google Classroom code:

Or, girls can redesign the cover of a romance novel (real or made up) and hand it in to Mrs Harada by Thursday 27 February.

Winners of these competitions will win a $25 Dymocks voucher.

Selecting the logos for our two new Colour Houses’ Crests

In our final Newsletter last year we advised the two new Colour Houses, Siena and Joseph.

Today, our students, staff and Presentation Sisters were given the opportunity to be a part of this significant time in the History of Domremy College. A number of designs for the Crests which will represent our two new Houses were provided to students and staff and our Presentation Sisters, with an opportunity to vote on one which, in their view best represents each House.This is a big decision and one in which all are playing a major part in shaping the future of Domremy.

Red Earth Immersion – Parent Information Session for Years 9-11

We are very excited to be able to offer Domremy students in Years 9-11 the opportunity to take part in a First Nations Immersion in Central Australia in September 2025. All students attended an information session about this on Tuesday 11 February. A Parent Information Session will be held next week. (Please hold all enquiries until after these two sessions.) 

The immersion will provide students the opportunity to journey to and around Central Australia, where they will make meaningful, personal connections with First Nations People. Participants will spend seven days learning about the rich culture of the land directly from its custodians, take part in a service learning project and make links to many areas of curriculum including History, Geography, Languages and communication and the Arts. The immersion will allow students to explore contemporary issues and foster global citizenship and intercultural understanding through engagement with diverse perspectives and experiences that are not available by simply holidaying in this region.

Hosted by Red Earth and Domremy College, the Parent Information Session will take you on a journey around the Red Earth immersion. We will discuss in detail the itinerary, maps of where students will get to go, logistics, our safety protocol, and the next steps required to enrol your daughter in the Immersion.

Primary School Visits

Our feeder Primary Schools form part of the greater Domremy College community, with many students from our feeder Primary Schools choosing Domremy for their secondary education.

At the start of each year, our Principal and members of the College Leadership team, together with student volunteers, visit our local feeder Primary Schools and engage with the students, answering their enthusiastic and at times very insightful questions about high school. Throughout the year, primary schools students also visit the College via Open Day, our College Tours, our Try Domremy for a Day program, in addition to other invitations such as to the College Musical, STEM days and the like.

Our Primary School Visits form part of this community driven engagement and our student volunteers are always great ambassadors for the College. Thank you to the students who are participating over the next couple of weeks. To the many others that we couldn’t accommodate, thank you too for your willingness to participate and rest assured that there will be many opportunities at Domremy for you to contribute and lead.

Here is a report from two of our Year 8 student ambassadors who attended the first of the Primary School Visits this week.

On Monday 10 February, we went to St Columba’s Primary School in Leichhardt with our College Captain Olivia Azzi and Mrs Marino. It was such a fun experience to visit schools and tell the students about our amazing community. St Columba’s students asked some important questions about high school life. When we got to St Columba’s Mrs Marino explained the activities that our school is involved in and the facilities we have. We talked about sport, Year 7 camp, carnivals – including Domremy Day, school activities, the Study Hub – and we spoke about the astonishing opportunities that are available at Domremy. After this, the students watched a video that showed some of these experiences. 

Subsequently, we talked to the students about our personal Year 7 experiences at Domremy. Olivia Azzi then talked about leadership roles and committees to give the young students an idea about what they would like to participate in, in the near future. Then, the students asked a couple of questions about Domremy life. Finally, on our way out, students were given tote bags with information about our school.

Special thanks to our Bus driver Bruno, who drove us and will be driving the other Domremy students to the other schools for the next couple of weeks, and Mrs Marino for taking the time to take us and organising it. These visits will be going on for the next couple of weeks, we can’t wait to talk to more students and discuss everything about Domremy with them.

Open Day 2025 is coming up on Sunday 9 March, 11am – 3pm.

Please feel free to pass on this information to family and friends considering Domremy College for their daughter.

Attending Open Day is highly recommended as part of the enrolment process.

All are welcome and there is no prior registration required.

We have had a large number of applications already and enrolment interviews will be scheduled for March this Term. 

If you have any queries at all about enrolling at Domremy College, or the enrolment application process generally, please do not hesitate to either email or telephone our Enrolment Officer: enrolments@domremy.catholic.edu.au and 9712 2133.

Domremy College follows the Sydney Catholic Schools’ policy of enrolling students for Year 7 two years prior to the start date. Please note the following:

• • There is no automatic entry for students from feeder primary schools.
  • There is no automatic entry for families with older siblings already enrolled at the College. 
  • All families must submit an Application for Enrolment.
