Prayer

Loving God,

As we begin this new school year,

we gather together to ask for your help in our learning and our playing,

our listening and our friendships,

our teaching and our sharing.

Thank you for the refreshment of the holidays,

for the people we have met and the places we have been.

We give thanks for our school,

for it is a special place for us,

Make it special for you also God and bring your peace,

love and friendship to everything we do here.

As we learn and play, be with us.

Be with us in our laughter, be with us in our tears,

be with us when we get things wrong and when we get things right.

Be with us as we come to school and as we travel home.

Be with us always God.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Let us make ourselves ready for what God is saying to us today …

Open the door of your heart; that the Lord may enter in.’

A Prayer for a New School Year

Almighty God

We give you our school.

We give you all the teachers and staff who work here,

We give you all the children who study here.

We pray our school would be place of great discovery, adventure and creativity.

May it be a place where we love to learn and where we learn to love,

A place where every one is respected and all are deeply valued.

We ask all this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Venerable Nano Nagle, Pray for us

(A modern prayer from www.lords-prayer-words.com https://www.lords-prayer-words.com/family/back_to_school_prayer.html)

As the new school year unfolds, it brings forth a myriad of emotions for each of us. For some, it may spark feelings of excitement, fascination, and even a sense of adventure, while for others, it might evoke apprehension, trepidation, or even dread. Regardless of the emotions the girls may be experiencing, it is with genuine enthusiasm that the staff and I extend a warm welcome back to each and every young women.

I hope the summer break was rejuvenating, filled with ample rest and lots of fun. As we embark on another exciting academic year, I trust that we are ready to embrace the challenges that lie ahead. Every new year brings with it a sense of hope, the opportunity to set fresh goals, and a chance to illuminate past challenges with newfound understanding. It is a time for new beginnings, where the lessons we’ve learned about ourselves and our learning processes can be applied to conquer new academic heights.

Let us tackle this academic year together, with determination and a hunger for knowledge. Let us push the boundaries of our capabilities, explore the depths of our potential, and emerge stronger and wiser with each passing day. Together, let us make 2024 an extraordinary year to remember, filled with wonderful achievements that surpass even our highest expectations.

As Presentation people, we embody the values of welcome, hospitality, and compassion. It is with great joy and sincerity that we extend a warm welcome to all new members joining our community today. A special welcome to our new Year 7 students, the Class of 2029, as well as to new students from Years 8 to 11 and their families who join our Domremy community.

As new parents, I welcome you to our school community! We encourage your active participation in your daughter’s educational journey. Research shows that strong partnerships between schools and parents lead to better student achievements and well-being. Together, we can create a nurturing environment where your daughter’s can thrive academically, socially, and spiritually. We look forward to building a strong partnership with you for the benefit of your daughter’s education and personal growth.

The new year has started with great energy and enthusiasm, bringing a sense of calm and positivity throughout the College. Students and staff alike have embraced the year with eagerness, anticipating another remarkable journey ahead. Our Year 7 Welcome, Stage 4 Assessment, Stage 5 Assessment & Year 11 Assessment evenings over the last couple of weeks received a fantastic response from parents, with strong attendance and positive feedback. We are grateful for the affirmations and support we have received from our parent community.

HSC Class of 2023

I am thrilled to highlight the remarkable successes of our 2023 HSC cohort, a group of 105 fine young women whose tenacity and hard work have truly paid off. From this cohort, 86 students received ATARs, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey. Among them, we are proud to announce we had an astounding 85 Band 6 performances and 33 of our students have been recognized as Distinguished Achievers.

Similarly, I am delighted to highlight the outstanding accomplishments of several of our students. Krystal Cheers was named Top Achiever, demonstrating her exceptional dedication and commitment to academic excellence. Moreover, Krystal Cheers and Eva Kolokotsas have been recognized as All Rounders, a testament to their well-rounded abilities and excellent performances across multiple subjects. Additionally, Monique Gatt received a nomination in Encore, while Sabrina Dunn received an ArtExpress nomination, and Carla Coluccio & Emilia Ginardi received nominations in SHAPE. These achievements exemplify the breadth of talent and creativity within our student body.

Furthermore, I am proud to share that our students gained four first places in the Archdiocese of Sydney. Sabrina Dunn excelled in English Extension 2 & Visual Arts, Krystal Cheers in Business Studies, and Eva Kolokotsas in History Extension. These accomplishments are exceptional and reflect the dedication and hard work of our students and teachers alike.

It gives me immense pleasure to announce that Krystal Cheers has been officially declared as the Dux of Domremy College for 2023. Krystal’s extraordinary performance, with an ATAR of 99.65, is a testament to her staunch commitment to academic excellence and serves as an inspiration to us all.

The collective performance by this tremendous group placed Domremy College 103rd in NSW. Their achievement demonstrates the most significant learning growth by far and Domremy’s best result to date with respect to our position in NSW. Congratulations and well done ladies!

Congratulations Vector Art, Icons, and Graphics for Free Download

In short, these are phenomenal results. As we reflect on the journey that has brought us to this moment, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. The Class of 2023 has distinguished itself not only through academic prowess but also through their relentless commitment to excellence in all endeavours.

Our 2023 College Dux, Krystal, delivered a beautiful address at our whole school High Achievers Assembly this morning, speaking from the heart and imparting valuable and learned experiences to our student body and in particular to the Class of 2024. 2024 College Theme

Our Year 12 Leaders recently unveiled our College Theme for 2024, “In the Fireworks, Find your Flair!”, which encourages each student to embrace their uniqueness and self-expression. This theme celebrates diversity and individuality within our community, likening each person to a firework, with their own distinct qualities to offer.

Just as fireworks symbolise transformation and growth, “In the Fireworks, Find Your Flair” encourages personal growth and self-discovery. It urges students to shine brightly, inspiring others and making a positive impact on the world. By finding their flair, students discover what truly excites and fulfils them, contributing to the joy and celebration within our community. Through this theme, we encourage all students to explore and embrace what inspires them.

On a final note…

We had a beautiful Opening Mass at which we launched our Learning and Wellbeing Framework. This will be the focus of our next Newsletter.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our inaugural Parent Welcome Social Evening next Friday 23 February from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. If you still need to RSVP, please check the Parent Weekly.

It has been wonderful to see many of you at recent school events. We eagerly anticipate the opportunities to meet and collaborate with parents and carers throughout this year, ensuring success in your daughters’ journey at Domremy.

In the coming weeks, we have several exciting events lined up, including the introduction of the SCS Amadeus Music Program for Year 8, the College Swimming Carnival on Friday 1 March, and Open Day on Sunday 10 March.

Open Day is a highlight of our calendar, offering a chance to showcase our school, facilities, and most importantly, our students and staff. Look out for information about Open Day in Compass and The Parent Weekly, with a reminder that Friday 15 March will be a day in lieu for all staff and students.

In the next fortnight, I will be visiting our Feeder Catholic Primary Schools with some of our Senior Student Leaders and Year 8 students as College ambassadors, sharing details about their fabulous experiences here at Domremy.

If you know of family or friends considering a high school education for their daughters, please extend an invitation to them to join us for Open Day. It promises to be an exciting, fun-filled, and memorable day for all who attend.

Blessings on you and your families,

Mrs Antoinette McGahan

College Principal

Sydney Catholic Schools Theme for 2024

Sydney Catholic Schools Theme for 2024

Every year, Sydney Catholic Schools creates a theme inspired by Pope Francis’ message for the youth and the Church’s World Youth Day themes. The scripture passage for the World Youth Day theme for 2024, “Those who hope in the Lord will run and not be weary.” (Isaiah 40:31), recalls a tumultuous time in Israel’s history when the very existence of God’s people was threatened with annihilation. Isaiah, the first major prophet, offered words of comfort to a disheartened people, reminding them to trust in God’s promises. These words resonate with believers today, echoing Pope Francis’ call to deepen our understanding of Christian hope.

In Christus Vivit, Pope Francis emphasizes that Christ is our hope, particularly for the youth, who are called to be missionaries of joy. The Church seeks to rekindle hope in the world, relying on young people as to be beacons of hope and joy. The image chosen for the SCS theme depicts Catholics journeying from around the world to World Youth Day, symbolizing their aspiration for spiritual renewal.

As Presentation People and members of the Catholic school community, we are called to journey with our students, families, and the wider Church community as joyful witnesses to hope.

Mrs Antoinette McGahan, Principal

Celebrating our 2023 High Achievers

Celebrating our 2023 High Achievers

Domremy College celebrated its High Achievers Assembly with much joy at the success of the Class of 2023 and their wonderful achievements. With 33 Distinguished Achievers among the class and 85 Band 6s in total, the College also placed 103rd in NSW. The nominations of students for particular exhibitions – Art, Music, and Technology and Applied Science – also highlighted the many and varied talents of these students. Domremy College is very proud of the students of 2023 acknowledging their great successes but also the tireless work of dedicated staff, and the village which surrounded each of the students in parents, family and mentors, as they strived for excellence. Engineering, Science, Medical Science, Law, Business, Media, Art and Cybersecurity were just some of the girls’ tertiary destinations pointing to the broad and varied curriculum available at Domremy College allowing all students to reach their personal excellence in whatever shape and form that may be. The Class of 2023 had a strong theme “Grow From What You Go Through” and this was echoed in the College Dux’s speech – Krystal Cheers – as she spoke of the young plants growing stronger through their years at Domremy.

Our 2023 College Dux, Krystal Cheers, delivered a beautiful address at our whole school High Achievers Assembly this morning and with her permission we reproduce her speech delivered at the Assembly today here.

In the Fireworks Find Your Flair – 2024 Student Leadership College Theme

In the Fireworks Find Your Flair – 2024 Student Leadership College Theme

Our 2023 Student Leadership Team presented this year’s theme to the student body at our College Opening Assembly.

College Vice-Captain, Sophia Ghantous, elaborates on the theme: ““In the Fireworks, Find Your Flair” encourages students to embrace their individuality and discover their unique strengths and passions. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant colours and patterns of fireworks, the theme emphasises diversity, inclusion, and the beauty of each person contributing to the school community. It advocates for passion-driven learning, creativity, and the pursuit of personal goals, fostering an environment that celebrates both individual achievements and collaborative efforts. By instilling resilience and a sense of community, this theme aims to create a dynamic and inspiring educational experience where each student can shine brightly in their own way.”

Staff Mass

Staff Mass

As the staff commenced a new school year filled with anticipation and hope, we were blessed to begin the first day by celebrating Mass in the College Chapel. Many thanks to Fr Michael McLean from St Mark’s Parish Drummoyne, for encouraging us for the year ahead as he reflected on the Words of Scripture, uplifting the staff with the message of healing and support that we offer in our vocation.

We also welcomed new staff to the College, with the traditional gift of a lantern, as a symbol of the Presentation Charism. Along with the lantern, a symbol of Christ’s light that we carry forward, new staff received a copy of Sr Noela Fox’s PVBM book “The Orphan with a Hundred Mothers,” which was launched at the College last year in May. The story that unfolds reflects the welcome, hospitality and values of Domremy College.

The Staff Mass served as a source of inspiration, encouraging us to approach the challenges and opportunities of the coming year with faith, resilience, and a sense of togetherness. Special thanks to Mrs Romina Zappulla, Mr Glenn Magson and the Domremy Staff Choir, who provided the music ministry to support our worship of the Lord.

Mrs Jane Sullivan, Religious Education Coordinator

Father,
you call us together at the beginning of this new school year.
We ask you to send your spirit upon us that,
as the days and terms unfold,
we may be always mindful of your presence
and alert to opportunities to see and serve you in those around us.
We pray that we may teach well by the example of our own lives,
by our knowledge and love of learning,
by our gentleness and care of the pupils entrusted to us.
In all that we do and say,
we pray that, in building up the community of our school,
we may contribute to the betterment of society
and to the Kingdom of your Son, Jesus Christ,
for your greater glory.
Amen.

Eucharist Celebration – College Opening Mass for the new academic year

Eucharist Celebration – College Opening Mass for the new academic year

Our Eucharistic Celebration held on Wednesday 7 February was a joyous occasion with an overwhelming sense of pride in Domremy College. I would like to thank Fr Thomas Kuruntham for celebrating the Mass, as we welcomed him to Domremy for the first time. We are very grateful and look forward to the many occasions in the future where we are confident he will support us in our faith journey. Thank you to the Domremy choir and musicians, led by Mrs Romina Zappulla and Mr Glenn Magson, who were able to provide beautiful music to assist the community at our celebration. I would also like to thank Mrs Fiamengo and Miss Leanna Price for their contributions and support of the Liturgy. Unfortunately, the Presentation Sisters were unable to join us for this Mass, and so we kept them in our thoughts and prayers as they embark on the new year.

Farewell to Ms Elsa Minadeo, Curriculum Coordinator

Farewell to Ms Elsa Minadeo, Curriculum Coordinator

It is with mixed emotions that today we bid farewell to a valued and cherished member of the Domremy community, Elsa Minadeo. As Elsa’s time comes to an end, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the impact she has had on our College and express our deepest gratitude for her contributions.

Elsa has been an integral part of our College for six years and her dedication and passion for her work have left an incredible mark on our College community.  Whether she was in the classroom, supporting extracurricular activities or collaborating with colleagues or students, Elsa consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence.

She brought a unique perspective to the College Leadership Team fostering an environment of creativity and inclusivity.  She has inspired both students and colleagues alike.  Elsa has not only been a valuable professional but also a caring mentor, providing guidance and support to many.

While we are very sad to see her go, but we are also excited for Elsa as she embarks on this new chapter in her life at Loretto Normanhurst. As she moves on to new opportunities, we are confident that her positive influence will continue to shine.

Please join us in expressing our heartfelt gratitude to Elsa for her years of service as we wish her all the very best.  We will miss her greatly, but the impact she has made on our College will endure.

Thank you Elsa for your dedication, hard work and positive energy you have brought to our community.  You will always be part of our Domremy family and we look forward to hearing about your future successes.

Welcome to Year 7 2024 – The Graduating Class of 2029

Welcome to Year 7 2024 – The Graduating Class of 2029

It has been an exciting time for our newest Domremy students!

The first weeks have been full of excitement and nerves, and we have seen the Year 7s settle in and quickly become part of our Domremy  community. During our Orientation Week, the girls participated in a series of transition activities designed to support starting of high school. These included Technology Immersions and a Digital Circuit to set up their devices, Learning Induction sessions with strategies for success at high school, and our community day – Belonging Day, which included many fun activities including a scavenger hunt, newspaper fashion competition, and house-based sports activities. These activities were supported by our Big Sister program, with each Year 7 student spending time with her Big Sister in Year 10 or 11.

We look forward to seeing our Year 7 girls grow throughout the year. Some of our new students reflections appear below.

Ms Ebony Ginty, Year 7 Coordinator

Erin

Since starting Domremy two weeks ago, my days have been full of new and exciting experiences. Day 1 started with joining our homeroom and meeting our Years 10 and 11 big sisters who welcomed us and helped us to not feel so lost in our new surroundings. We have taken part in Belonging Day which involved fun activities like creating our paper flowers. We listened to the Amadeus music demonstrations to help us decide what instruments we wanted to play, the canteen sold pancakes for pancake day (which were delicious), and today I played with the school junior water polo team against Brigidine College and the result was a 9-all draw. I’m looking forward to what the rest of the term has to offer.

Abbey
So far at Domremy it has been busy with things like Belonging Day, swimming lessons, tech immersions, finding my way around the school, but it has all been fun. Although a big difference from primary school, I am getting there slowly and, thanks to the many different people to help guide me through year seven, from teachers to big sisters and even other older students at the school, they are all here to help and therefore it hasn’t been as difficult as I anticipated.

Gresilda
Hi, I’m Gresilda and I am from class 7E. I used to go to Mortlake Public School and I am currently 12 years old. Year 7 is a really big step in life but I was told to never give up and try my hardest in high school. My family and I agreed that Domremy would be the perfect school for me because, I believe Domremy is a beautiful and empowering school that provides a safe and nurturing environment for all girls, to ensure the best education and responsibility. The college offers amazing opportunities and experiences that build independence and resilience. So far I have been having a blast at this college and the best experience, I have made a ton of new friends and I even got the best teachers, the best Year 7 coordinator, Mrs Ginty and of course we can’t forget the best Principal Mrs McGahan. It has only been 2 weeks and we have had so many fun activities such as belonging day, valentines day, orientation day, tech immersion, Ash Wednesday and so much more. I can’t wait for all the other activities we will be doing like school photos, tour guide, swimming carnival and so many more. Everyone here is so loving and kind and best of all the facilities are possibly the most prettiest thing I have ever seen. All the teachers here provide so much support and care into our education and wellbeing. I know I have already said this but truly this is the greatest school and I can’t wait to see where the world takes me. Thank you for taking your time to read this. Hope you have a good rest of your day.

Ash Wednesday and Domremy Lenten Prayer Challenge

Ash Wednesday and Domremy Lenten Prayer Challenge

Ash Wednesday, 14 February 2024, began the liturgical season of Lent.

We celebrated Ash Wednesday with a whole school liturgy with the blessed ashes. The signing of the blessed ashes and words spoken are a reminder of tuning in to what is important during the 40 days in the lead-up to Easter and more importantly for life.

“Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. ”

Later in this Issue you will find the Message of the Holy Father Francis for Lent 2024, on the theme: “Through the desert God leads us to freedom” as well as the Catholic Church’s guidelines about Lenten Penance in a letter from Archbishop Fisher. These may give you some ideas to deepen your understanding of the Lenten season.

At the College we have our Domremy Lenten Prayer Challenge to guide us through this season. Please feel free to pray along with us and be more aware and engaged in Lent this year.

Year 9 iSTEM’s tallest tower

Year 9 iSTEM’s tallest tower

The Year 9 iSTEM class has begun the year with a practical activity.  The class was divided into groups and, after some theory on the benefits of teamwork, were asked to complete a task.  Each group was given two sheets of newspaper and told to make a self-supported tower.  The winner would be the tallest tower.

The tallest tower was just under 1 metre tall.  A great achievement using only two sheets of newspaper and no glue.  After the event we discussed the problems encountered by each group and how they solved those problems.

Below is an image of Maeve, Sarah and Emily, the winning group with their tower.

2025 Immersion opportunity to Central Australia – Years 9, 10 and 11

2025 Immersion opportunity to Central Australia – Years 9, 10 and 11

In Week One of this term, the students in Years 9 and 10 participated in a presentation provided by Red Earth, a company that organises Immersion experiences to various destinations in Australia.

Domremy students in Years 9, 10, and Year 11 will have the opportunity to visit Central Australia in 2025. Please ensure that you keep updated by the Parent Weekly communications that provide information on opportunities such as these, to avoid disappointment. It would be wonderful to have this eventuate in 2025 for our Domremy students.

Below are some photos of students at the Red Earth Student Presentation. Red Earth’s Presentation was engaging for all present, providing insight into the importance of the immersion experience for our Domremy Community and the First Nations people who live in the homelands we will visit in Central Australia.

From the Leader of Learning and Teaching – Year 11 Studies Curriculum

From the Leader of Learning and Teaching – Year 11 Studies Curriculum

As Year 11 begin their journey through the Senior years, learning how to learn becomes one of their most significant challenges. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to learning, and discovering the strategies that work best for each of them is a crucial part of this process. In line with this, Year 11 students will be engaged in a specialised Study skills programme, Studiosity, every Thursday B in Period 5.  The Studiosity programme is designed to equip students with the tools and strategies they require to revise and reinforce a range of study skills, critical thinking capabilities and habits of mind, and to increase students’ confidence in their ability.

The programme combines instruction with practical opportunities for students to develop strategies for independent study and time management for all subjects. We begin with active learning techniques proven to enhance understanding and retention and how to confront and overcome distraction and procrastination – the most common difficulty for students in Years 11 and 12. Time management is explored – a major need for success in study, with specific reference to time management techniques such as Pomodoro and certain note taking systems including the Cornell method. Contemporary theories of learning and memory are explained and applied.

Effective study strategies are vital in HSC success and the programme places a strong emphasis on how students can improve rather than solely what they have achieved. The role of parents and carers in this improvement cannot be underestimated. Encouraging conversations with your daughter that include questions like “What goals are you currently working towards?” and “How can I help you achieve your best?” fosters a mindset of continuous improvement. Establishing a quiet, organised space for studying, minimising distractions and ensuring clear communication with teachers is also strongly supported.

As we continue to navigate the academic journey together, let us embrace a culture of growth, resilience, and personal excellence.
