Year 9 Japanese Excursion – The Japan Foundation

Our Year 9 Japanese class visited The Japan Foundation in Central Park Mall, Chippendale, Sydney on 3 March. Students had a great time participating in calligraphy and cultural lessons and reflect on their experience below. We thank the Japan Foundation Sydney staff for their ongoing support of our students.

Mrs Rebecca Godfrey, Japanese and EAL/D Teacher

This Japanese excursion was an unforgettable experience. The warm and welcoming interactions with the staff and students greatly enriched my understanding of the language. I especially enjoyed practicing shodō ( Calligraphy ), which deepened my appreciation for how students in Japan dedicate their extracurricular time to mastering this beautiful art. Seeing their dedication has truly inspired me, and I feel more motivated than ever to continue learning Japanese. – Zoe

The Japanese excursion was an amazing experience which we will never forget. It has inspired and motivated our class after having an amazing day and learning so many new things. Our class was able to truly understand the meaning and cultural significance of shodō (Japanese calligraphy). We learnt the proper techniques and the history behind it, and we brought back some finished pieces which we are all very proud of (displayed in/outside TU3/2). We were also able to compete in some general knowledge trivia about Japan, winning prizes to bring home and will remember this fun experience. We were able to walk out of those doors with a deeper understanding and view of Japanese culture. The experience has inspired us all to continue our journey of learning Japanese, we are more motivated to learn further about the language, history, culture, life…. of Japan. – Jasmine

The Japanese excursion gave us a deeper understanding about Japanese culture and their traditional writing calligraphy, shodō, learning new techniques and different significant brush strokes. We created our own and brought it home as a memory and some are displayed on the outside of TU2 and inside of TU3. The experience helped motivate me. – Yesha
