Work experience placement at Canva

In the first week of the September school holidays, Sabrina and I had the amazing opportunity of completing our work experience at Canva. Canva is an Australian graphic design platform that aims to empower designers across the world. Both of us were selected for this work experience through our Year 11 Design and Technology class, and travelled to the Surry Hills office over five days.

Throughout our time at Canva, we met a range of designers, from product designers to engineers, design researchers to designers in the motions, videos and photos department, as well as animators and coders. This opportunity allowed us to consider possible options for our future, spend time completing activities that we enjoyed, and make long-lasting friendships and industry connections. We were also allocated hosts, who mentored us throughout our week, and ensured that we had all the possible opportunities we were hoping for, and achieved all our goals.

Both Sabrina and I spent the majority of the week completing a ‘Personal Project’. Sabrina’s Project was to create a vlog about her week of work experience at Canva while using Canva’s resources and platform. She produced a high-quality, three-minute video, which was viewed by the Motion Photos Department.

My Project was an Audit of Canva’s design resources, from the perspective of a high-school student. I audited parts of Canva to show the useful features of their website, as well as what could be improved, and I provided possible solutions. I prepared a presentation that was delivered to my host, Samantha, and her Planning and Strategy Team and was later presented to the Education Team at Canva.

Additionally, we both sat in on zoom meetings joined by all at Canva, and other meetings run by our mentors. We were able to observe the role of teamwork in a professional setting, which enables us to understand the significance of teamwork at Domremy.

Sabrina and I are so grateful for this opportunity. It was invaluable and tremendously beneficial for both of us, and our Year 11 Design and Technology class, to which we were able to pass on what we learned.
