Supporting a Smooth Transition to High School: Domremy Transition program ‘Connect 627’

Domremy is in a collaboration with four of our feeder primary schools: All Hallows Five Dock, St Mary’s Concord, St Patrick’s Summer Hill and St Patrick’s Mortlake, in shaping and strengthening the transition from Year 6 primary school to Year 7 at high school.

On Day 1, 6 August, we welcomed our primary colleague teachers to Domremy where they spent the day engaging in professional conversations with our staff and observing a range of Year 7 classes. This experience gave them valuable insight into the high school learning environment and the kinds of routines, expectations, and teaching practices that are an expectation of the College. This building understanding will support students in making a confident and successful start to secondary school.

Domremy faculty leaders of Maths, English and Science, Mark Pangilinan, Julia Vengsarkar and Katherine Hoban then accompanied Lucy Silva (Domremy’s Leader of Pedagogy) in a school visit to St Patrick’s Summer Hill, where we observed a number of Year 5 and 6 literacy and numeracy and science blocks. Visits to All Hallows Five Dock and St Mary’s Concord will occur over the next few weeks.

The collaborative program offers insights for teachers into both worlds of primary and secondary schooling and great inspiring ideas about teaching and learning that we can take on board from each other’s worlds.

This initiative forms part of our broader goal to ensure a connected, supportive, and student-centred transition experience for all incoming Year 7 students.
