The Solemnity of All Saints Day and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed
All Saints Day was celebrated on November 1. It honours all the saints – people throughout history who followed the example of Jesus through faith, love, and service.
All Souls Day, on November 2, is a time to remember and pray for all who have died. The tradition of praying for the dead has ancient roots and became more widespread around the 10th century.
Different cultures mark these days in special ways. In the Philippines, families visit cemeteries to clean tombs, light candles, and pray for loved ones. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is celebrated with music, dancing, and colourful displays – all expressions of love and remembrance for those who have passed away.
In memory of all those who gone before us, let us pray:
On this day, we are called to remember those who have died,
Particularly those who have died in the past year,
And pray for their joyful reunion with you, their loving creator.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace.
Amen
