In the Fireworks find your Flair – Spotlight on Mila (Y7) – Ice Hockey
In this edition we spotlight Mila, Year 7, on her outstanding achievements at the conclusion of this year’s Ice Hockey season.
Mila and her U13 team, the Sydney Bears, dominated the competition throughout the season, consistently leading their division. However, in a heart-stopping grand final, the team was narrowly edged out in a dramatic finish, largely due to an injury suffered by their goalie in the dying minutes. They secured the runners-up position, showing grit and determination right to the end.
But Mila’s season didn’t stop there. She was invited to join the women’s team of her former club, the Canterbury Eagles, to compete in their Grand Final. Mila was the youngest player on the roster, facing off against women aged 18-30. In an incredible twist, she found herself up against a formidable Canberra team that featured six National Hockey League players.
In what can only be described as the game of her life, Mila scored both of the Eagles’ goals during the first two periods. The Canberra Pirates mounted a fierce comeback, forcing the game into extra time after tying the score. In the final, decisive moment, Mila played a crucial role: with a lightning-fast breakaway, she drew the defense, allowing her teammate to seize the opportunity and score the winning goal in sudden-death overtime.
The Canterbury Eagles Women’s Team became the 2024 Champions, and Mila’s contribution was nothing short of heroic.
Congratulations Mila! In what is often described as an intense sport, Mila didn’t hesitate to step well outside her comfort zone and excelled!
