Feast of Pentecost
In the liturgical calendar, the Feast of Pentecost is celebrated fifty days after the Resurrection. This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost Sunday. In the Jewish tradition, Pentecost is marked with a joyous festive celebration in thanksgiving for the blessings of agricultural bounty.
For us Christians, the hallmark of celebrating Pentecost is the commemoration of that event when the Risen Jesus appeared to the apostles who were gripped with fear and deep sense of anguish. With Mary’s presence among them, the Risen Jesus appeared and breathed on them the Holy Spirit. They received the Holy Spirit that launched them into the world to be witnesses of the Risen Lord, to the ends of the earth the Gospel of Salvation.
We are commissioned for this, too: to make our lives living witnesses of the Good News in our time today. This Pentecost event also marks the birth of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. Let the significance of Pentecost be for us all a profound assurance that the Holy Spirit is with us! We are filled with a profound assurance that amidst the crisis we face, we are called and equipped by the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be steadfast in carrying out the mission entrusted to us: To make Jesus known and loved.
Pentecost prayer
Come Holy Spirit
Make our ears to hear
Make our eyes to see
Make our mouths to speak
Make our hearts to seek
Make our hands to reach out
And touch the world with Your love.
Amen.
