Combined Schools Book Club

In the second week of Term 4, Domremy welcomed students from St Patrick’s College Strathfield, St Vincent’s College Ashfield and Christian Brother’s High School Lewisham, as part of our Combined Schools Book Club. We had around 75 students attend from Domremy!

The morning was an engaging and informative session – challenging and inspiring our students to read for pleasure throughout their lives. Gabrielle Mace, a passionate library advocate with expertise in evidence based research and in piloting a successful ‘Just Read’ program, led the sessions, challenging and causing students to examine their reading habits and experiences. She stressed to the students the importance of being connected readers, writers and thinkers.

Gabrielle asked students to examine why stories matter, delve back into their reading histories for impactful moments, discover the secrets behind impactful writing, as well as creating their own stories using only 5 words.

Here is an example of creative, critical thinking and writing from our students which was composed and celebrated on the day.

Stranger in the Midst

A concealed face within shadows,

staring ominously down to me.

Sharp knocks at the door;

nowhere for me to hide.

Eyes like a dark void,

they pierce me, I shatter.

Danger upon the creaky doorstep.

A gust of icy wind,

sends shivers along my spine.

Blood curdling scream. A thud

Blood paints the floor red.

Footsteps pounding, not my own

The lonely sound of silence.

The knife sparkles in moonlight

Chest bursting, heart beating hard.

Knife whizzes, skimming my ear.

I sense danger behind me.

Blades fly from every direction.

The stranger and my father.

Darkness, it’s all over now.

We congratulate all students for their exceptional enthusiasm participating in this event and Gabrielle Mace for her inspiring workshop and address.
