Charlotte and Natalie: NSW Parliament Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition
We thank local Drummoyne MP, and Domremy alumna, Stephanie di Pasqua, for the brilliant opportunity afforded to young students in the Drummoyne electorate to attend the NSW Parliament Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition on 20 October.
Congratulations to Charlotte and Natalie (Y9) who took part. Charlotte’s passionate delivery of her topic, ‘Should the legal voting age be expanded to 16?’, earned her 2nd place in the competition, and Natalie explored the topic of whether video games have more benefits than drawbacks. Here are some of their reflections:
“It was interesting listening to the perspective of people my own age, especially critical insight into the upcoming social media ban, which was the third and overall most popular topic of choice. Everyone spoke with impressive distinction and intellect. Through this experience we refined our public speaking skills, gained new perspectives on contemporary issues, and learned more about what it takes to speak on important topics in Parliament.” (Charlotte).
“It was inspiring to hear such thoughtful perspectives on current issues that matter to young people today and to see how passionate young people can be about real-world issues, and I’m grateful for the experience and everything we learned from it.” (Natalie)
The event was recorded in the Legislative Assembly Hansard, the record of our oldest Parliament in the country.
With thanks to Ms Di Pasqua’s office for the recordings of Charlotte’s and Natalie’s deliveries of their topics and for the photos.
Charlotte: Should the voting age be extended to 16?
Natalie: They say it’s just a game: Do video games have more benefits than drawbacks?
