Textile Art Piece Challenge

Textile Art Piece Challenge

We are incredibly proud to announce that four of our talented students have been recognised in the 2025 TEA TAP (Textile Art Piece) Challenge, a state-wide competition celebrating creativity, innovation and excellence in textile design.

Second Prize – Stage 4

Kaya Young – Botanical Harmony

Kaya was awarded Second Prize in Stage 4 for her elegant cushion design, Botanical Harmony. Inspired by the delicate balance of nature, Kaya’s piece features calla lilies symbolising purity and elegance, alongside a butterfly representing transformation and life. She utilised applique to layer bold botanical forms onto a navy background, allowing strong colour contrast and visual impact. Intricate embroidery detailing, particularly within the lilies, added refinement and technical sophistication to the final piece. Kaya’s work demonstrated both thoughtful symbolism and a confident application of textile techniques.

Third Prize – Stage 4

Eva Wakhare – The Blue Star Stitch

Eva received Third Prize in Stage 4 for her beautifully constructed cushion titled The Blue Star Stitch. Drawing inspiration from botanicals, Eva incorporated five blue star creeper flowers against a soft beige background. The striking cobalt blue tones created visual contrast, while embroidered outlines and leaf stitching enhanced the botanical theme. The addition of button centres introduced a subtle three-dimensional element, elevating the overall craftsmanship. Eva’s design showcased careful attention to detail and a strong understanding of composition.

Highly Commended – Stage 5

Isabella D’Aranzo – Wonders of the Ocean

Isabella was awarded Highly Commended in Stage 5 for her dynamic bunting inspired by marine flora and fauna. Her work captured the hidden beauty beneath the ocean’s surface, combining applique sharks to create bold silhouetted forms with delicate embroidery to enhance texture and movement. Through stencil printing techniques, Isabella amplified natural spirals and patterns, creating rhythm and visual depth. The result was a striking and visually engaging textile piece that demonstrated technical confidence and creative maturity.

Third Prize – Stage 5

Tayla Nolan – Bloom and Burrow

Tayla received Third Prize in Stage 5 for her charming bunting titled Bloom and Burrow. Inspired by global flora and fauna, her work celebrated the irregular beauty of nature. Tayla incorporated pastel tones, handcrafted embellishments and embroidery to add texture and individuality. The intentional use of contrasting colours ensured each flag was visually engaging, while the imperfect hand-finished details symbolised nature’s organic character. Her piece reflected both creativity and thoughtful conceptual development.

Congratulations to Kaya, Eva, Isabella and Tayla for their outstanding achievements. Their success is a testament to their dedication, creativity and willingness to experiment with advanced textile techniques.

We can’t wait to see what they create next.
