A Sweet Success in Year 9 Design and Technology
This term, our Year 9 Design and Technology students stepped into the world of product design with a delicious twist, creating their very own artisan chocolate bars. Blending creativity with industry-based design thinking, the girls experienced the full process of taking a product from concept to shelf-ready reality.
The project began with students analysing existing confectionery brands, studying everything from flavour trends to packaging aesthetics. Inspired by luxury labels and boutique chocolatiers, each student developed a unique brand identity for their bar. They explored typography, colour palettes, and visual hierarchy while ensuring their designs reflected a clear target market and unique selling point.
Students also used Tinkercad to design custom chocolate moulds, giving them hands-on experience with 3D modelling and vacuum forming and demonstrating how digital technologies can influence real-world manufacturing.
Once their packaging concepts were underway, the practical fun began. Students experimented with a variety of inclusions, from freeze-dried strawberries and marshmallows to pretzels, biscuits, and more.
To complete the project, students produced a professional wrapper design using digital software, ensuring their final product looked as good as it tasted. The results were outstanding: vibrant designs, cohesive branding, and beautifully made chocolate bars that looked ready for a boutique shelf.Β
Year 9 should be incredibly proud of their achievements. Their work showcased innovation, attention to detail, and a willingness to push their design ideas further.Β
A truly sweet way to end the term! π«β¨
