Class of 2025: Debate – Students v Teachers 17.9.25
“That teachers learn more from students than students learn from teachers”
Report by Elodie Atherton, 2025 Public Speaking and Debating Prefect
On Wednesday 17 September, we held the annual teacher v student debate as part of the year 12 graduation festivities. This year we debated the topic; “That teachers learn more from students than students learn from teachers.” The students were arguing in support of the topic (affirmative) while our teachers disagreed (negative).
It was very competitive as the student team (Lucinda, Charlize and Carmen in Year 12) raised excellent points about how much we teach our own teachers about technology, pop culture and the critical skills of empathy and patience that our teachers need in order to adapt to the classroom environment. From teaching them about the boot button in a zoom meeting, to stepping in as the IT supports almost every lesson, we are undoubtedly teaching our teachers!
These arguments were countered by our teacher team (Mr Rozsynoi, Mr Capizzi and Ms Angiletta) who argued that they undoubtedly teach us more, as they are experts in their subjects, and they have taught us many curriculums since the beginning of year 7. They argued about the importance of learning from experts and that you need 10,000 hours to master/become an expert in a field. How can students possibly be more masterful than a teacher who has studied in their expert field for much longer?
Congratulations to the teacher team who won out the debate, as they successfully argued that they teach us ‘more’ than we teach them. The points raised by both sides were excellent and it was so enjoyable for our audience, especially for our year 12 cohort as we enjoy our final few days at school.
Thank you to all our student and staff debaters who took the time to prepare and put on an engaging, exciting debate for us! Thank you also to our adjudicators Ms Atkins, Ms Thompson and Niamh Foley, and also Mr Thomas our debating coordinator who helped organise the event. It was a great way to celebrate 6 years of debating at Domremy.
