Senior School Link – Week 4, Term 1 2024 - 16 February 2024
Bob Meakin, Deputy Headmaster & Head of Senior School
Dear Parents and Carers
Our week began with our House Swimming and Multi-Sports Carnival. This is a tremendous House-based day that saw some outstanding swimming in the AFC and some wonderful sporting experiences, especially for our younger students, when they were not in the pool. There is no doubt that the House spirit is alive and well in the Senior School!
As the term is now in full swing, our Year 12 students have been making a serious contribution to the lives of our junior students. Under the leadership of Theo Walsh and Angus Malcolm, our Year 12s have managed to imbed some superb qualities through the Houses with the younger students. The strength of this peer teaching and coaching is palpable and our juniors have learned how important it is to take care of one another and to ensure that every member of this community is welcomed and supported. The Prefects’ strategy of care for our younger students is the best that I can remember, and I commend Year 12s for this.
I would like to thank Year 7s for their maturity and engagement with Consent Labs as part of their Student Wellbeing Programme; this topic requires a mature outlook and an ability to think ahead and the reports from Housemasters have been superb. Please read the update from our Director of Student Wellbeing, Angelique Sanders, for more information.
Tonight, we welcome our Year 12 Parents for a social evening and a tour of the Year 12 College, hosted by Mr Alastair Metcalf. I look forward to seeing you there this evening.
I particularly like to congratulate our 1st XI cricketers, who have secured their fifth consecutive CAS Premiership, with three games to play. This has equalled the CAS record that was held by Knox Grammar School.
A reminder that our swimmers are in action at the CAS Swimming Championship on Thursday 14 March; our Year 9, 10 and 11 students and Prefects will hopefully be in fine voice to cheer on our hard-working swimmers.
Have a great week!
Best wishes,
Bob Meakin Deputy Headmaster & Head of Senior School
Nicholas Jolly, Director of Academics / Deputy Head of Senior School
Dear Parents and Carers
On Tuesday evening this week, Year 10 students and parents attended a study skills webinar with Dr Prue Salter. Dr Salter is Sydney’s study skills guru! Her sessions are always highly informative and full of excellent study skills strategies. Thanks to those who joined us online. The School subscribes to Dr Salter’s website; the Study Samurai. Please use the below log in details to access the huge range of study skills strategies and resources for students and parents. I recommend this webpage to all families and students:
Dr Salter will be delivering sessions for Year 7 and 12 students later in the year. Th School has also engaged Elevate Education to run study skills seminars at school with Year 8 and 9 students this year.
Year 12 parents please note that we will be hosting online Year 12 parent teacher interviews on Wednesday the 6 March from 4pm. More information will follow soon via email.
Have a great week.

Dear Parents and Caregivers
CAS Swimming carnival The annual CAS swimming carnival will be held at Homebush on the afternoon and evening of Thursday 14 March. Cranbrook sends a large number of supporters to this event and in 2024 all Year 8 ,10 and 11 students will be attending. An Operoo form will be delivered shortly to parents which will contain further details. Students who are spectating will leave school at 3pm and will be transported to the venue by bus with an anticipated return to school at around 9.30pm. This event is compulsory for all students in Years 8, 10 and 11.
Misplaced personal items We tend to find various personal items left around the School throughout the day. The School cannot take responsibility for belongings which are lost and it is strongly recommended that all items are labelled with a student’s name as well as his House. Lost property is under the control of Mr. Owusu, the General Duties Master, and it is his office that students are directed to if they report missing items.
Student Cards Unfortunately the process of producing and then distributing student cards for Year 7 students has taken longer than anticipated. This process is a priority but until students receive their student cards EFTPOS facilities will remain an option for Year 7 at the Hive Cafe. Alternatively lunches can be ordered online.

Message from the Director of Student Wellbeing
Dear Parents and Guardians
This week in our Student Wellbeing Programme our Year 7s took part in workshops run by Consent Labs. Our philosophy is to provide our students with a sound understanding of concepts such as consent, in a way that relates to them. This can be in terms of boundaries in friendships including how to use words to express how you feel, how to read body language and how to ensure you feel safe. Obviously there has been a lot of media attention on the topic of consent, so starting with these foundations in Year 7 will help our young people to gain an understanding of what consent is and how to understand if they have crossed a boundary.
Year 8 took part in a workshop run by Elephant Ed on language and labelling. This session was around how the words we use can have an impact and the damage labelling someone can have. Some of the feedback I have received from students include:
“I have learnt that words hold a lot of power.”
“We shouldn’t judge others.”
“I learnt about what it is to be respectful.”
Once again this is important for our students to understand how their words can be unkind to others.
Year 9 focused on how to develop a growth mindset, and this is something that we constantly reinforce in our classroom teaching and learning, on the sport field, in the arts and music domain and when they need to work through problem solving.
Year 10 were given the chance to discuss cancel culture and how young people can perhaps look to resolve disputes in a less public, online manner and instead focus on communication that allows for meaningful conversations.
Year 11 worked through a study skills session developed by Ms Fletcher, Head of Year 11 College. She is working with the students to ensure they feel supported in their academic pursuits.
Finally, Year 12 were given the freedom to have adult conversations in their Mentor groups about the big issues they are facing now. The feedback from these sessions is that they relish to opportunity to have the safe space to be able to voice their opinions and views.
Regards

Dear Parents and Guardians
Last Saturday was a momentous day for Cranbrook, as the School’s cricket team triumphantly claimed its 5th consecutive CAS premiership. The achievement was made all the more extraordinary as the team secured the Premiership with three matches remaining in the season, thereby extending their unbeaten streak to an astounding 15 CAS games.
This extraordinary feat brings Cranbrook to the history making position of, equalling the 94-year-old Archer Shield competition’s record for the most consecutive wins. The team’s performance over the past five years truly embodies our school motto, ‘Esse Quam Videri’ – to be, rather than seem to be.
Under the leadership of Mr. Staunton, Mr. Banes and Tom Greg, the team has fostered a culture of excellence, passion, and commitment. They play the game hard, but in the true spirit of the game. The school is indebted to their dedication and care of the program and students.
Witnessing this group’s growth and accomplishments over the past five years has indeed been a privilege. Their journey has not only been marked by exceptional talent and skill but also an unwavering determination to strive for more. As we celebrate their fifth straight victory, there’s an undeniable anticipation for what the next season holds. Given their track record, there’s every reason to believe that they will be aiming for a sixth straight win next season.
All in all, we had a fantastic weekend of sport. The Opens Tennis teams lead the way winning the from 1sts to 5ths. The 1sts really showed us what they are capable of when they are switched on as they beat Trinity 6-2. They are a very young team and if we keep putting performances like that together, we should see some excellent results in the next few years.
The 1st Water Polo team were once again handing out the heart medication as for the 2nd week in a row had a thrilling 1 point win, this time knocking off kings. That’s three in a row now for the 1st, let’s make it 4 next week!
Well done to the 2nds Basketball for a hard-fought win against Trinity at Friday night lights. The 1sts were desperately unlucky not to get the same result as they went down in the last minute of the game after leading from the start.
Our rowers travelled to Canberra over the weekend for the ACT Head of the River with some good results. Thanks to all staff, parents and students involved for making the trip a success.
House Swimming and Multi-Sport Day on Monday was a huge success despite the rain and lighting in the afternoon. It was fantastic to see such high levels of comradery and good sportspersonship around the school. The pool was in overdrive with House competition, while Hordern oval and Lewin courts had a variety of sports including Bubble Soccer, Netball, Pickleball, Golf Archary and Binball. We look forward to the winning houses being announced at assembly next week.
A fantastic result for Remy Mckay who placed 3rdin the CIS Triathlon competition this week. Well done to all the students that took place in this event.
A big congratulations to Cranbrook Alumni, Grae Morris for being selected for the 2024 Olympic games in Windsurfing. We can’t wait to watch Grae compete and know he will be doing his best to bring home a medal.
All students received an email last Friday about Winter Sport Selection – please encourage your son to confirm or finalise their choice prior to the deadline of Wednesday 28th February.
Looking forward to seeing everyone around the grounds this weekend – the full fixtures list can be found here. Please click here for 2024 T1 Week 1 CC Sport Academy Timetable.
Kind regards

Cranbrook Rowing – ACT Regatta Weekend
Dear Friends of Cranbrook Boat Club
103 Oarsmen and coxswains accompanied by 10 coaches travelled to the Australian Capital Territory over the weekend to compete in the ACT Junior Championships and the ACT Head of the Lake Regattas held on Lake Burley Griffin.
ACT Junior Championships (Saturday 17 February) Following what is known as an ‘Elimination Format’ with only the top crews in each age category and boat classification making it through to the Championship Race, Cranbrook qualified at least one boat in all Quadruple Scull Finals in all age groups and whilst not winning a medal, recorded multiple 4th places.
Standout crews included the Open 1st Quad of; Tom Gloster, Charlie Mann, Edward Hartwright, Toby Lane and Ed Williams who finished 4th in the Championships Final as did Owen Mudie, Henry Dawson, Toby Pearce, Angus Messiter and Tom Sharrer in the Under 17 Division. Tate Leggatt, Edward John-O’Brien, James Campbell, Max Allchin and Isaac Cody showed great form to finish 5th in the Under 16 Division. Cranbrook’s Under 15 1st Quad of Sam Farquhar, Oliver Southwell-Keely, Jensen Lee, Fred Emmanuel and James Walsh displayed impressive maturity to qualify for the Championship Final in their very first row on Lake Burley Griffin. The only non-ACT crew to do so. They went on to finish 5th in the Final.
Current Under 17 NSW State Champions in the Double Scull, Christopher Vlahos and Luke Martin almost repeated their winning efforts of a week earlier leading their Final with 300 metres to go before being outjumped by local school Canberra Grammar. No doubt ‘home track’ familiarity played a part in measuring their run to the line. Christopher and Luke adding ACT Silver to their NSW Gold. Cranbrook was the only school to qualify 2 crews in the final with Henry Dawson and Toby Pearce recording an impressive 4th place.
Captain of Boats, Jack Stone teamed up with Lachlan Larsson to qualify for the Final of the Under 19 Double Scull where they too finished in 4th place.
Head of the Lake Regatta (Sunday 18 February) Sunday’s format saw a broader emphasis on the depth of School programs and Cranbrook didn’t miss the opportunity showcase its talents across all grades.
Jack Stone led the charge with a Gold Medal in Div 4 of the Schoolboy Sculls, Lachlan Larsson a Silver in Div 3, Luke Martin Silver in Div 2 while Chris Vlahos came home with a gold in the Year 10 Single Sculls. Cranbrook recorded a Gold and Bronze Medal in the C Final of the Year 10 Quadruple Sculls and Silver Medals in the E,D & B Finals of the Year 8 Quadruple Sculls, especially remarkable as it was the boys’ first regatta on Lake Burley Griffin. Our very strong Year 9 got into the action with Bronze and Silver Medals in the C and E Finals of their Divisions.
Cranbrook bought their Regatta Weekend to a close with some fantastic sculling in the Open Quadruple Finals.
Rafael Waugh, Dash Bouvier, Lachlan Harwood, Carson Proutt and David Tabachnik threw caution to the wind and motored home to a Silver Medal in Division 3 ahead of Cranbrook clubmates; Alex Copping, Sol Stahis, Thomas Henderson, Huon Groves and Flynn Henderson. Cranbrook Head Prefect, Theodore Walsh stroked the 2nd Quad to a Silver Medal in Division 2. Theo along with team mates; Will Van Der Byl, Alex Murdoch, Inigo McVinish and Owen Mudie saw off a spirited challenge from Cranbrook 4th’s of Jamie Carlisle, James Mills, Max Moylan, Oliver Klein and Julian Kelly.
The 1st Quad of; Tom Gloster, Charlie Mann, Edward Hartwright, Toby Lane and Ed Williams repeated their heroics of the previous day with another gritty performance in Division 1 again finishing 4th in a national standard field. The crew threw it down to their opponents holding down 2nd for the early stages of the race and no doubt gained valuable insight into topflight racing.
The efforts of all boys in all age groups proved decisive with Cranbrook again wining the coveted Governor Generals Cup for the second consecutive year.
The School is indebted to the fabulous support given by the parents and Friends of Cranbrook Boat Club (FCBC) led by Mrs Fiona Henderson who fed and kept the boys hydrated through a long and challenging weekend. School would also like to acknowledge the tireless efforts of the Coaching Staff of Adrian Henning, Stephen Irons, Will Begg, Jack Dawson, Sam Logan, James Scott-Brown, Nick Stavrinos, Barney Roach, Jasper Dawson-Damer and Will Wright who supported and guided the boys through the complexities of the 2 Regattas. And a heartfelt thanks to Mr Mills who kept the whole show together.
Regards
Mr Carroll PDHPE Teacher / Head of Rowing
Basketball Report – Round 7
The Cranbrook 1sts & 2nds played against Trinity on Friday in the second Friday Night Lights game of the year; two great games of quality basketball see report below. It was the seventh round of the CAS competition for the Brookie Ballers against Trinity and the Brookie Ballers won 35 games and lost 12 games. Next challenge is Knox in Round 8.
1sts Cranbrook started strong and led 28-19 at quarter time against the undefeated Trinity 1sts (6 wins- 0 losses). The visitors retaliated in the second quarter, but Cranbrook still led 45-40 at half time. Third quarter was tight with defence dominating the quarter, Cranbrook still held on to the lead, 55-53. The last quarter was a nail biter, both teams made big shot and big plays. It was neck and neck and with 8 seconds left; Cranbrook down two points with the ball. Justice Single (13 points) was under immense defensive pressure but was able shake the defender out of his shoes and got a good look at a 3-point shot. Legend Cranbrook Coach and holder of most free throws in a row at Cranbrook (138 in the Old Gym), Hank Foster, who has worked with most of the Cranbrook 1sts during his 20 years at Cranbrook, was sitting at half court watching the game. Hank had a perfect view, “I thought it was going in for sure, it was dead straight”; it rimmed out. Trinity secured the win on the foul line. Final score, Cranbrook 71 – Trinity 75. All of Cranbrook 1sts chipped in and arguably played their best game of their season. Captain of Basketball, Jesse Sher, ran around the court like he was dodging Bin Balls, except he was dribble at the same time; Jesse finished with 15 points with a bag full of assists and rebounds. Finn Haysom got the team rolling early with three 3-point shots, finishing with 15 points. Charlie Walsh was on fire off the bench with 8 points; and Tom Schall blocked shots, rebounded and score 8 points. John Dulhunty came in and competed every possession. Neil Chandler was composed at both ends of the floor and knock down an important 3-point shot in the second quarter. Tex Christensen continues to impress and made a 3-point shot late in the game that looked like it might take the game from Trinity. Will Kimberley was his usual high energy, disrupting Trinity’s offence and making fast breaks when wasn’t any. Overall, it was a cracker of a game, big, excited crowd and even the Headmaster enjoyed T-Rex blasting out of the speakers during a time out. Cranbrook 1sts has battled hard this season, and every game has been less than 10 points win/loss margin, the CAS is very even up to Round 7.
2nds The Cranbrook 2nds started well against Trinity and continued to play hard and fast throughout the game. At no stage did Cranbrook look comfortable against Trinity’s defence and red hot 3-point shooting; but Cranbrook 2nds led at every break. It was tight at the end of the game and with a timely 3-point shot by Benny Olschewski followed by two 3-point daggers by Noah Doherty (8 points), Cranbrook won 56-52. Sam Collison played well and made some chiropractic shots, finishing with 12 points; Ollie Lyons had important 10 points. Once again it was a team effort with the Cranbrook 2nds continuing their habit of playing intense, relentless basketball

No bus is provided since all debates are within the Eastern Suburbs this week. Students are required to make their own way to venues after school.
A reminder that all Years 7-9 debaters must be collected by a parent or guardian at the end of the night.
Social and Legal Debating Social Debating continues 3.30pm this Thursday 22nd February for students already enrolled. Students train with their coach, prep and then debate, finishing at 5.30pm. Social Debating is closed to spectators, and parents collecting their son at the end can do so from the Rose Bay Avenue pedestrian gate.
Mooting students also have their next training at 3.30pm this Thursday 22nd February. This session will be all about understanding the 2024 Bond University National High School Mooting Competition, which Cranbrook have entered.
“The National High School Mooting Competition brings together high school teams from across the county. Teams of students from participating schools will compete in the preparation of persuasive arguments on behalf of fictitious clients and present their arguments before moot judges including Bond Law academics and experienced members of the judiciary. The National High School Mooting Competition is designed to share the Faculty’s knowledge and interest in law with high school students who hope to pursue a career in law or expand their horizons. The competition will provide students with an opportunity to learn about the law and develop their research and advocacy skills.”
We are excited to cultivate this opportunity for senior students, who will be coached by our very own IB Coordinator, Mr Nicholas Hanrahan, who brings his own experience and enthusiasm to the role.
Public Speaking Our next public speaking session takes place 3.30pm this Monday 26th February, with students enrolled meeting their new coach, Luisa. Luisa has been a successful debate adjudicator and public speaking coach, supporting a diverse range of students across multiple competitions and workshops. In addition to developing capabilities in traditional forms of public speaking, Luisa is keen to encourage Cranbrookians to grasp a more contemporary range of oral communication contexts, including podcasting, group interviews and panels, and even television presenting!
We will shortly be announcing an additional public speaking opportunity for Years 7 and 8 students who would like to build their confidence and skill and be credited through formal external assessment. This will run on a different afternoon to our Monday group and will have a numbers limit. More information about an upcoming information seminar on this opportunity will feature in next week’s article and students in the previously identified cohorts will receive an email from me – stay tuned!
Model United Nations This week, students involved with our Model UN lunchtime sessions continue with part 2 of their debates on the question of civil war in Sudan. The upcoming resolution for Weeks 5-6 will focus on the question of the high seas, encouraging students to research and debate the protection of international sea lanes vital for global trade and security.
Cranbrook will be sending five students to the Model UN State Conference next month, an event that runs over an entire weekend and immerses delegates in a range of international debates, mock summits and creative role playing. Year 9 students Jack Kelly, Kernel He, Tate Leggett, Year 10 student Archie Talib, and Year 12 student Oscar Simich will all represent the school at this event. We look forward to hearing about their experience!
Students already enrolled in the programme and who are interested in small group coaching for Model UN so they may develop confidence and skill to compete in external events are invited to attend our weekly Thursday morning sessions. Coach Jack will lead these sessions from 7.15-8.15am, with room details published in the dedicated TEAMS channel for students.
Oratory programmes are fully subscribed for Semester 1 There has been a lot of recent interest in participating in one or more of our oratory programmes. However, close date for sign-ups have long passed and we are presently fully subscribed across all debating, public speaking, and Model UN. We are therefore unable to accept new enrolments. However, students keen to gain access to our resources and prepare themselves for Semester 2 sign-up are welcome to reach out to me (note, we only accept expressions of interest from students directly). Sign-up for Semester 2 offerings will circulate via student email in mid-June.

Clean up Australia Day
Clean up Australia Day is one of the major events in Cranbook’s calendar. This year, it is taking place on Sunday 3rd of March, and we would love to see any many of the students as possible participating in what is the first major service activity of the school year.
Recently, the students set themselves service goals for the semester in their SWP sessions with mentors so here is their first opportunity to make those goals a reality! This is a perfect chance for them to provide an important service to our local community and the environment as a whole by removing rubbish from our local bushland, parks, and waterways.
Key details are as follows:
Date: Sunday 3rd March Time: 8:30 – approx. 10:30am Location: Meet and return to the Vicars Centenary Hall – working in House groups going to the various collection locations assigned in our local area. What to bring: Heavy duty thick gloves, a water bottle and sunscreen. Rubbish collection implements may also be brought and used. Bring food for the morning and medication, if needed. What to wear: Cranbrook sports uniform, hat, raincoat if required and enclosed footwear such as sneakers. No open footwear. Sign in: All students will be required to sign in at 8:30 in the gym and sign out before returning home.
Parents and carers should have received the permission forms today via Operoo. These need to be returned by 29 February.
I look forward to seeing as many of the boys as possible on the day!
Mr Nolan
