At the end of this week I conclude my time at Cranbrook (actually, I am here until 17 July) and I wish to thank the staff, students and parents who have made me feel welcome over the past ten weeks. As I have noted on numerous occasions, I have a great deal of affection for Cranbrook and it has been a pleasure being part of this vibrant community again.
I am a strong advocate for the existence of a positive culture at a school. And one of the key ingredients in the strong and highly relational culture that exists in thriving schools is gratitude. A senior academic at the University of Tasmania, Dr Kerry Howells, observes that a mindset of gratitude is one of the best protective behaviours we can develop in a school culture. Where there is gratitude, kindness readily follows. Each day of our lives is a gift, a blessing, something for which we should be deeply grateful. Each experience, both positive and negative, can be viewed in the same way. Disappointments are teachable moments, not a portent for disaster.
Schools need to be places where it is safe for children to make mistakes; to stumble and fall but still get up to try even harder. This is not an old-fashioned method – it has never been more necessary than in the present day. I would like to think that Cranbrook not only offers a safe place to make mistakes; we provide a safe place to form opinions and to learn to think. Kindness must be part of the culture and made as natural an act as breathing, so that when confronted with disagreement our automatic response is kind and respectful.
My wish for the Cranbrook community as we embark on the well-deserved break, is that we reflect on what we are grateful for and transfer those thoughts into acts of kindness. Resilience, grit, empathy and courage are character traits that get plenty of talk-time in our society and rightly so, but gratitude and kindness are no less important and need to be nurtured.
To the students who are the lifeblood of this place, when you return next term: aim high, challenge yourself, support the new Head of School, embrace all that is good about Cranbrook, and create your own future here.

Message from Michele Marquet, Head of Junior School
Dear Parents and Carers,
It is a rare week where we do not see a media headline warning of the negative impact of social media and smartphone technology on children and young people.
Over the last year, many of us have read or heard about Jonathan Haidt’s book The Anxious Generation. Haidt argues that the widespread adoption of smartphones and social media has been a major contributor to a growing mental health crisis among young people. The book suggests that a phone-based childhood disrupts healthy development, leading to increased anxiety, depression and other issues. Haidt concludes that the shift from a play-based childhood to a phone-based one has had detrimental consequences for young people’s wellbeing.
Some of the more major impacts of smartphones and social media on childhood that Haidt notes include:
Interference in crucial aspects of child development, including social interaction, sleep and attention span.
A spike in anxiety, depression and other mental health problems, particularly among adolescents.
Such impacts very reasonably raise grave concerns for parents and educators alike. To help us better understand the consequences of smartphones and social media on growing minds and to explore what we can do to reduce these risks for our own children, early next term we are hosting a very special presentation for all our Junior School families where we will hear more on this vital topic from a child psychologist and a representative of Waitmate, an organisation that helps families work through these issues.
Haidt emphasises that addressing this mental health crisis requires collective action from all of us. This is such an important area for every family to seriously consider, so we are asking each Junior School family to send one member to attend this essential presentation. Compass We are pleased to introduce Compass, our new Student Management System, which will over time improve communication and streamline a range of administrative processes. This platform will increasingly replace our previous systems and marks a significant step forward in how families will be able to interact with the School.
Initially, Compass will be used for submitting attendance notes, updating medical details and accessing school news. Over time, additional features will be introduced and shared via Compass news items. A comprehensive user guide will be provided in the week before Term 3 commences to help you get started, and our ICT Compass support team is available should you need assistance. Thank you for your support as we make this transition.
Morning Carlines Over the last few weeks, we have noticed a growing number of our families arriving at School around 7:30am and waiting in the driveway, potentially blocking Kent Road before the gates open at 7:45am, or most dangerously, allowing their children to get out of their cars along the driveway before the gates are open. Such behaviour, apart from impeding the public roadway, which is inconsiderate towards other road users, is also exceptionally dangerous, putting at risk the safety of all our children. We ask please for your full cooperation to ensure the safe running of carlines every day.
For safe morning carlines:
Please do not enter Kent Road before 7:40am, unless your child is enrolled in a co-curricular activity.
No student should exit their parent’s car, except in front of the Reception gate.
No student should get out of the car on the driver’s side of the car.

Dear Families,
A Living Legacy: The Year 1 and Year 6 2024 Parent Gift
The Junior School is delighted to announce a wonderful and lasting gift from the Year 1 and Year 6 2024 parent communities, a thoughtfully designed native garden for Dangar Oval on the east side of Field 1, surrounding the Kindergarten to Year 2 playground.
This initiative was born out of a shared desire to enhance an underutilised area of the campus and provide natural shade for our youngest students during play. Over the course of Term 4, 2024 and Term 1, 2025, this project was discussed and refined through collaboration between parents, staff and school leaders, culminating in a plan that brings both ecological and educational value to the school grounds.
The Cranbrook School Parents’ Association (CSPA) generously funded the project, which features a selection of Australian native plants already established across the Cranbrook campus. The garden not only complements the existing landscape but also fosters a sense of place and identity rooted in our local environment.
An important and inspiring element of this initiative was the involvement of our Year 6 Environmental Leaders. Their participation in the project planning reflected their passion for sustainability and their commitment to leaving a meaningful legacy for future students.
This native garden is a tangible expression of the Junior School value of Global Mindedness. It supports our focus on environmental education development, giving our boys a direct connection to concepts such as biodiversity, stewardship and community generosity.
We offer our heartfelt thanks to the Year 1 and Year 6 2024 parents for their generosity, vision and commitment to enriching the lives of current and future students. Their gift will grow and thrive for years to come, providing not only shade and beauty, but also a living classroom for exploration and wonder. Inspired by this contribution, we warmly encourage other year groups to consider similar legacy gifts that support our campus, enrich our learning environments and embody the values we teach.

Pre-schools’ Update – Week 9
Dear Pre-school Families,
As we wrap up Term 2, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the exciting experiences of the past week and celebrate the incredible growth of our children.
St Michael’s 2-day group enjoyed a visit from Australian Wildlife, where they had the opportunity to meet a variety of animals and learn about their habitats. The incursion was a wonderful way to deepen their understanding about this term’s unit of inquiry.
This week, St Michael’s 5-day and 3-day groups and St Mark’s, welcomed the EnviroMentors incursion, further supporting our ongoing focus on sustainability and environmental awareness.

A Heartfelt Thank You!
We extend our deepest thanks to all the families who so generously donated goggles for our recent appeal. Thanks to your kindness, we have collected an incredible 97 pairs, which will now be put to great use in Fiji. Your support truly makes a difference in the lives of others.
We also wish to acknowledge and thank Jerry Watson for his wonderful efforts in organising the Winter Clothing Appeal. This morning, Mr Baker and Mr Andrews accompanied a group of students to the Wayside Chapel to personally deliver 14 large bags of warm winter clothing.
Experiencing the impact of these donations firsthand was a powerful and meaningful moment for the students. It helped them to see how their contributions – big or small – can make a real and lasting difference in the community.

Little Leagues Report – Round 7
End of Term Sport Report
Round 7 marked the final Saturday of fixtures for Term 2. As we head into the school holidays, I would like to take a moment to congratulate all students on their outstanding commitment to Cranbrook sport this term. Across every team and activity, the effort, enthusiasm and sportsmanship on display each week have been a credit to the students, their coaches, managers and families.
A special congratulations to the students who represented IPSHA at the CIS Rugby Trials and the CIS Football Tournament this week. We are thrilled to share that Santiago D has been selected for the CIS Football team following a strong performance, a fantastic achievement.
The holiday break offers a valuable opportunity to rest and recharge before we return for the final three rounds of the winter season. I am looking forward to seeing our students finish the winter season with the same energy, teamwork, and positivity they have shown throughout.

Year 3 Cranbrook’s Year 3 students wrapped up the term with some impressive victories at Koola Park. Their dedicated training focus on attacking play was clearly on display in the matches. We look forward to their return and aim to finish the season on a high.
Year 4 Year 4 showed notable improvement in their performance, particularly in their clash with local rivals, Scots. Despite several players being unwell, the students who took to the field delivered a determined and proud display. Axel A’s outstanding defensive work and Rocky F’s strong running in attack were highlights.
Year 5A The Year 5 Cranbrook 12-a-side team opened their Saturday with a strong showing against a well-drilled Knox outfit. Wills O led the attack with powerful, dynamic runs, creating space for Bertie to work his magic out wide. Michael L’s defensive efforts were also a standout, contributing to a convincing win.
Year 5B Cranbrook’s 5B team faced challenging opponents from Riverview and St Pius but showed great perseverance. While defence proved difficult to maintain, the team crossed the line multiple times, with Will’s strong ball-carrying playing a crucial role.
Year 6A Cranbrook delivered another spirited performance against St Augustine’s. The attack began to gel, with Frank T and William S leading the way. Unfortunately, an early lead by the opposition proved too great to overcome, despite Cranbrook’s improved second-half effort. St Augustine’s 41 – Cranbrook 19.

3A – 15-0 Win The 3A team delivered another commanding performance, this time against Shore. Their quick passing and relentless attacking play kept the opposition under constant pressure. Several players scored outstanding goals that reflected excellent build-up play and creativity in front of goal. Most impressive, however, was the team’s mindset. After the match, players openly reflected that they hadn’t played at their best, a sign of their hunger to keep improving.
3B – 6-1 Win The 3Bs continued their strong form with a solid win. Goals came from multiple contributors, and the team’s creativity, movement, and tactical discipline were on full display. Their ability to link passes and support one another made for an entertaining and impressive performance.
3D – 3-3 Draw In a thrilling contest, the 3Ds showed great character to fight back from a 3-1 deficit and secure a draw. Shore fielded a strengthened side including some B team players, but Cranbrook responded with resilience and teamwork. The students can head into the holidays proud of their progress and their never-give-up attitude.
4A – 4-2 Win The 4As put on an excellent team display against Grammar, with a dominant midfield performance and consistent pressure in the attacking third. Despite an exceptional effort from the opposition goalkeeper, Cranbrook’s attacking persistence earned them a well-deserved win.
4B – 9-2 Win The 4Bs dominated their match from start to finish in a 9-2 victory. Several players made major contributions in attack, and the team’s passing and finishing were clinical throughout. It was a comprehensive team performance and a fantastic way to end the term.
4C – 2-2 Draw The 4Cs played out a competitive and closely fought 2-2 draw. Cranbrook maintained their structure well and showed maturity in possession. After conceding early, the team showed great determination to get back into the match.
4D – 4-3 Win In one of the most exciting matches of the weekend, the 4Ds came away with a thrilling 4-3 win. Harry F was superb in goals, making several crucial saves that kept the team in the contest. Ben T provided plenty of go-forward in attack, consistently putting pressure on the opposition and creating space for teammates. In the midfield, Connor R was composed and effective, controlling the tempo and linking defence to attack.
4E – 2-3 Loss The 4Es put in a spirited performance in a narrow 3-2 defeat. Jasper S played an excellent attacking game, scoring some well-taken goals and constantly threatening the opposition’s defence. Will N also made a strong impact, stepping into goals for a half and making several important saves to keep Cranbrook in the match.
5A – 0-3 Loss The 5As experienced their first loss of the season in a tough match against Grammar. While they created several chances, they struggled to convert and conceded two late goals due to over-enthusiastic challenges. The match provided valuable lessons, and the team is motivated to come back stronger next term.
5B – 2-1 Win Cranbrook’s 5B team started strongly, controlling possession and creating chances early. A composed finish and consistent pressure helped secure a gritty 2-1 win. Despite a scrappy second half, the team maintained their composure to claim victory.
5C – 6-0 Win The 5Cs continued their impressive run with a dominant 6-0 win over Sydney Grammar. Their teamwork and clinical finishing were highlights, showcasing the confidence and cohesion building within the group.
5D – 3-2 Win The 5Ds battled hard to earn a narrow 3-2 victory. With sharp finishing and solid defensive organisation, the team did enough to edge past their opponents in a tense and exciting match.

The final Saturday of Term 2 sport saw Cranbrook’s Winter Junior Tennis program wrap up with a high-energy Davis Cup-style tournament. The day placed a strong focus on teamwork, leadership, and resilience, with players supporting one another and displaying the core values of Cranbrook Tennis.
The Development Squad made excellent progress this term, moving from mini tennis to confident full-court rallies. Students are gaining a solid understanding of shot selection and rally construction, building a strong foundation for competitive play.
Looking ahead to Term 3, all junior players will focus on improving their serving to enhance match performance. The Development Squad will also begin exploring doubles positioning and tactics to further develop their court awareness and team strategy.
Several players stood out this term:
One student consistently showed great sportsmanship, encouraging teammates and demonstrating maturity beyond his years.
Another impressed with unwavering focus and commitment at every training session.
It has been a highly positive term for Cranbrook Tennis, and we carry great momentum into the second half of the year.

Multi-Sport
The Multi-Sport team had another energetic and enjoyable session in Round 7. The morning began with warm-up games including Survival Tag and a range of football skill activities focused on kicking and catching. The main game was Numbered Indoor Football, where students demonstrated excellent teamwork, communication and skill execution. Congratulations to Leo W, who was named player of the week for leading his team with confidence and enthusiasm in his role as captain.

Music Update – Week 9
Dear Parents and Carers,
What a wonderful Term 2 we have had in the Junior School celebrating all things music, from our Music Morning Concerts, Assembly performances, Junior School Soirée, our K-2 and Y3-6 Showcases and finally our Fundamental Gala Concert held last week at Town Hall. Congratulations to all our performers in achieving excellence! The Music Department is thrilled to have witnessed the growth, enthusiasm and artistic sensibility of our young musicians.
Looking ahead… Our musicians will have further performance opportunities in Term 3, and I would like to bring to your attention our Year 3-6 Junior School Eisteddfod on Thursday, 28 August (Week 6), as part of our Spring Festival. CBCA Book Week – Book an Adventure
In Week 5 of next term, we will focus on this national celebration of Australian children’s literature and reading across the School.
We are excited to bring the school together for a K-6 Book Character and Theme Parade at 8.30am on Friday, 22 August and Book Week Assembly at 12noon on Wednesday, 20 August. Parents are warmly invited to both events.
We will also welcome book adaptation theatrical performances and look forward to a special ‘Books at Bedtime’ event for our youngest readers.
