Little League Sports Report 7

Little League Sports Report 7

Round 7 was a week of mixed results for our sports teams, there were some outstanding performances across all sports. The 6A football team showcased their hard work and dedication in one of their best games of the season, resulting in a well-deserved victory. Their efforts during training certainly paid off on the field.

Similarly, the 4A rugby team displayed exceptional skill, speed, and excellent structure, delivering yet another strong performance. Their teamwork and discipline were evident as they dominated the game.

As the school holidays approach, we would like to wish all the boys a well-deserved break. However, we encourage them to stay active and maintain their fitness levels during this time. Let’s keep up the effort and focus at training as we enter the latter stages of the winter season.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday break.

Yours in sport,

James Roughan

Head of Sport & PDHPE

Paul Kelly Cup

Three Cranbrook teams had a very successful day at the Eastern Suburbs Paull Kelly Cup AFL Competition last Wednesday. The event hosted 12 teams from local schools in a short format tournament with two pools and a final.

Our three teams all performed well with many of the boys rapidly learning a new sport and developing their skills over the day. Cranbrook 3 played a string of close games throughout the day where the difference was less than two goals. With the wind playing havoc the boys did a great job of improving game on game and should be proud of what they achieved in a short period.

Going into the final game of the pools, Cranbrook 1 and Cranbrook 2 were each sitting second in their pools, tied on points with Saint Andrews and Bondi Public respectively. With the ties being broken by goal difference the boys needed to not only win their next game, however, win by a much larger margin than their competition to move to the final game.

Cranbrook 1 kicked it up a gear and managed to belt out 62 points against an outgunned Cranbrook 3, surging their points difference score and soundly booking a spot in the finals. Cranbrook 2 came against Maroubra Junction and absorbed significant second half pressure to finish 33 points ahead. ultimately beating Bondi on the ladder by a points difference of less than 4%.

The teams were thrilled to set up an all Cranbrook final between the 1’s and the 2’s, which turned out to be an electric game with both teams scoring several goals and Cranbrook 1 coming out as the overall winners by a few goals. This qualifies us through to the reginal finals in August. The boys will continue training Tuesday mornings and we will also have AFL games as a Co-Curricular on Monday afternoons next term. If your son is in year 5 or 6 and wants to have a kick around after school, please sign up through the Co-Curricular form.

Message from Michele Marquet

Message from Michele Marquet

Dear Parents,

Another superb evening was held on Tuesday night at Greater Than, the whole school musical showcase, at the Sydney Town Hall. The Junior School boys’ performances, vocally and instrumentally, individually and in combined items, were breathtakingly beautiful. Our Senior School boys were also extraordinary – every item memorable and showcasing the marvellous musical talent of a huge number of Cranbrookians. Once again, our heartfelt thanks must go to our truly outstanding Music staff, led by Philip Beverley, Head of Music P-12, who inspire and allow these talents to flourish and be shared. A gallery from the evening can be viewed below.

French Day

Our fabulous French teachers, Monsieur Chaveroux and Madame Garcia, organised a fun-filled French Day yesterday for all our K-Y6 students! Welcomed in the morning by an accordionist playing French music and entertained at lunchtime by some clowns, the day proved to be lots of fun. The boys participated in a wide range of experiences, including making bagatelles, engaging in an art competition, playing a vocab game, taking part in a dancing workshop and making a banner of all the flags for the French-speaking countries. Thank you to Monsieur Chaveroux and Madame Garcia for their enormous efforts and enthusiasm for promoting the speaking of French.

Y3-Y6 Athletics Carnival

An enormous thank you to Mr Roughan, Mr Cohen, Mr Taylor, Mr Hardes and all the staff who organised and conducted the Y3-Y6 Athletics Carnival today. We were treated to a glorious day and the boys showed fantastic spirit and enthusiasm.

We remind parents that this term ends tomorrow on Friday, 23 June at the normal time. Term 3 commences for all Pre-school and Junior School students on Tuesday, 18 July. All K-6 boys should return in full winter School uniform. Over the holidays, please check your child’s uniform items to ensure he has not accidentally acquired something that belongs to another child. The holidays are also a good time for our students to have a haircut. Hair length should be above the collar of the boys’ shirts.

End-of-Semester Reports

A reminder that there will be an end of semester report sent to families during the holidays. This year, these reports will be emailed to families. These end of semester reports have been adapted and simplified to reflect that some information has already been shared with parents through the end of unit progress reports and parent-teacher check-ins.

The Kindergarten end-of-semester report will give a global picture of your child’s progress over the semester and include indications of how frequently his work habits are being displayed independently. A general comment from the class teacher is also included.

Our Years 1-6 end-of-semester report will give a global picture of your child’s progress in all subjects over the semester. This report will indicate at what level he is showing secure mastery of the relevant outcomes, concepts, content and skills taught. An indication of how frequently he independently applies the pertinent year level work habits is included. A general comment from the class teacher is also included.

Special Report: Social Media Influencers

Social media influencers have become powerful individuals who often shape the opinions and beliefs of others due to strong connections with their audiences. In today’s fast-paced digital world, attention has become a valuable commodity.

However, the impact of social media influencers on youth mental health is a growing concern, most recently, the controversial actions and statements of Andrew Tate. His rise to fame has made him a polarising figure, amassing a significant following of mostly young males. Educators and families have raised urgent concerns about the damaging nature of Tate’s content, worried that his messages may radicalise students and create a generation of young men with regressive and harmful beliefs.

Young people often compare themselves to the idealised lives presented by influencers, leading to feelings of inadequacy, low self-worth and dissatisfaction. Social media algorithms may also expose them to inappropriate or harmful content, such as explicit material, promotion of harmful behaviours, or distorted perceptions of body image or mental health.

It is important to guide a young person’s social media use and promote open communication. Be curious to comprehend why they might be drawn to radical influencers, like Andrew Tate, and actively seek understanding as part of the solution. While not all influencers have a negative impact, parents play a vital role in ensuring a balanced approach to social media. By actively modelling kindness, respect and positive values, parents can help tackle the sway of radical influencers and be part of the solution to countering unhealthy masculinity.

This Special Report provides guidance on how to respond to misinformation and disinformation, instead encouraging critical thinking and emphasising the value of real-life connections. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please consider seeking medical or professional help.

Cranbrook’s Learn to Swim programme is pleased to announce that new spaces are now available for immediate enrolment. The programme has been designed to cater to swimmers of all ages and abilities, from beginners aged from 6 months to more advanced swimmers who want to refine their technique and become stronger and more confident in the water. If you are looking to enrol your child in a swimming programme, now is a great opportunity through the quieter season where you may receive more active learning time.

To make things even easier for parents and guardians, we have also introduced an online enquiry system for assessments. Our Learn to Swim team will get back to you with a response regarding the next available time slots for assessments. The assessments will ensure your child’s swimming ability is matched to the appropriate class based on their needs.

Cranbrook’s Learn to Swim pool will remain at 31 degrees Celsius all winter. This ensures that swimmers can enjoy the water in a comfortable and safe environment, even on the coldest days of the year. Our experienced instructors are passionate about teaching children to swim, and we use a range of techniques and tools to ensure that every child receives the support and guidance they need to progress. We believe that swimming is an essential life skill that every child should learn, and our Learn to Swim programme is an excellent way to achieve this goal.
