Sailing Report

Tom Brewer

This past weekend, our Cranbrook sailors competed in the NSW Optimist State Championships up at Toronto, Lake Macquarie. Six sailors from Junior and four from Senior School gained some valuable experience in a very competitive fleet. We were very lucky to have some light wind fill in each day right before racing began but this also made for some unpredictable sailing conditions.

Congratulations to Walter Heeley (Year 7) who raced a very tight regatta, finishing up in 5th place, only 2 points away from 3rd. A big well done goes to Marcus Retboell (Year 5) & Will Harris (Year 5) who made their debut in open fleet, racing against some of the top National sailors. In intermediate fleet, we saw some great mindset work from Balthazar Roche (Year 5), after having a frustrating Race 4 to getting his head back in the game and scoring a 3rd place in Race 5. We also saw some exciting sailing from Harrison Lucas-Martinez (Year 7). Whilst it was his first regatta, he showed confidence and skill racing up in the top half of the intermediate fleet at times.

With States now wrapped up, the boys are training for the next event in June and, ultimately, the Optimist Nationals next January, where the potential lies to qualify for an Optimist Australian Team spot.

Information for K-Y6 Parents about Progress Reports & End of Semester Reports

Over the next week, our K-Y6 students will bring home their schoolbooks from Term 1 to share their learning with you.

End-of-Unit Progress Reports

This year, we have introduced a ‘Progress Report’ for all subjects, so our families will receive a more timely update on their child’s progress and development. There will be one of these progress reports for most units taught throughout the year.

For English, Maths and units of inquiry, these reports will be glued into students’ books at the end of each unit. Mid next term, our specialist teachers will send progress reports for their subject areas. Please sign all these progress reports, so we know you have had an opportunity to read them.

These ‘Progress Reports’ will have a description of the unit completed, along with the central idea and the lines of inquiry that have shaped the unit’s development.

In Kindergarten, the report will give an indication of the level of the students’ knowledge, skills and work habits specifically taught within the relevant unit and whether the student needed guidance to complete tasks or displayed mastery independently.

For students in Years 1-6, the report will give an indication of the level of the students’ knowledge, skills and work habits specifically taught within the unit and whether the student required guidance or support to consistently and independently meet unit expectations or if they displayed mastery beyond their year level.

If parents have not had a catch-up call with their child’s teacher in the last fortnight of this term, there will be an opportunity to touch base with them during the first few weeks of Term 2. Further information about how these dialogues will be organised, will be sent out shortly.

End-of-Semester Reports

There will still be a report at the end of each semester, but these will be adapted to reflect that some information has already been shared through the unit progress reports.

The Kindergarten end-of-semester report will give a global picture of your child’s progress over the semester and include indications of how frequently his work habits are being displayed independently.

Our Years 1-6 end-of-semester report will give a global picture of your child’s progress in all subjects over the semester. The reports will indicate at what level he is showing secure mastery of the relevant outcomes, concepts, content and skills taught. An indication of how frequently he independently applies the pertinent year level work habits will also be included.

Dear Parents,

What a joyful day we had yesterday, welcoming over 1000 grandparents to the Junior School for the first time since 2019. It is always very special to have our students’ grandparents visit the Junior School. It is wonderful to watch the interactions and helps to remind us all of the vital role this generation plays in the lives of our young Cranbrook students.

Easter Service

A reminder that next Wednesday, 5 April, our K-Y6 students should be dropped off at the Junior School by 8:10am, as usual, so we can bus them up to the Senior School.

The K-Y6 Easter Service will commence at 9am in the Vicars Centenary Building. Parents are very welcome to join us.

We will then bus the Junior School boys to the Senior School campus (and back at the conclusion of the service).

IMPORTANT: Y3 – Y6 Change to Uniforms on Training Days

We have reviewed the time taken to change into sports gear on training days, the loss of lesson or play time and the amount of lost property resulting from changing gear for the afternoon training sessions and have decided to make some changes to what the boys wear to school on their training days.

Starting in Term 2, students should wear the following to school on their winter sports training, PE and Sport days.

Mondays:

Y3 – Y4 students training for Rugby/Football should now wear to school their Cranbrook training gear (including their relevant training jersey) or their navy Cranbrook PE gear (if their Rugby/Football training gear is unavailable for any reason). Rugby/Football should wear their sports shoes to school and bring their boots/shin pads with them to change into before training commences.

Winter tennis students should wear to school their navy Cranbrook PE gear and sports shoes.

Tuesdays:

Y5 – Y6 students training for Rugby/Football should now wear to school their Cranbrook training gear (including their relevant training jersey) or their navy Cranbrook PE gear (if their Rugby/Football training gear is unavailable for any reason). Rugby/Football should wear their sports shoes to school and bring their boots/shin pads with them to change into before training commences.

Wednesday or Thursdays:

Currently, students in Y3 – Y6 who have a PE lesson on one of these days wear their navy PE gear and sports shoes and should continue to do so.

Fridays:

All students have Sport on a Friday afternoon. The Y3 – Y6 boys should wear to school their Cranbrook Football or Rugby training gear (including the relevant training jersey) or their navy Cranbrook PE gear (for all other sports or if Rugby/Football training gear is unavailable for any reason). They should all wear their sports shoes. Football/Rugby should bring their boots/shin pads with them to change into at lunchtime.

Perspectives: Podcast Series – A Conversation with our Headmaster

Welcome to the second episode in our Perspectives podcast series: conversations between key members of our academic staff and our Headmaster, Nicholas Sampson.

In this podcast, Michele Marquet, Head of Cranbrook Junior School, discusses with our Headmaster, how Cranbrook celebrates the whole child, the School’s commitment to the elevation of truth, the development of self-knowledge and the creation of a better society.

They discuss the importance of educational breadth and negating the harmful effects of technology through the cultivation of empathy.

If we cannot construct community, however brilliant the minds we raise, we stretch and deepen, they will function selfishly.

Providing personal insights and anecdotes from his teaching career, and own schooling years, Nicholas Sampson reflects on the vital importance of human interaction and connection in today’s technological world.

Cranbrook School Leads the Way in Data Security with ISO27001 Certification

Parents and caregivers of Cranbrook School students, we have some exciting news to share! Cranbrook School has become the first school in Australia to receive ISO27001 certification, reflecting our dedication to ensuring a secure and protected learning environment for our students and community.

So, what exactly is ISO27001? In simple terms, it’s an internationally recognised standard for information security management systems (ISMS). It sets out the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving a system to protect sensitive information. By obtaining this certification, Cranbrook School has demonstrated its commitment to implementing a robust and comprehensive set of security controls and policies.

While no organisation can ever be 100% secure, achieving ISO27001 certification is a significant step towards enhancing the security posture of Cranbrook School. Over the past two years, our team has worked tirelessly to put in place a multitude of controls and policies that help protect the data of our students, staff, and families. As we move forward, we will continue to refine and improve these measures, always striving to ensure the highest possible level of security for our school community.

The journey to ISO27001 certification would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our School’s Executive Leadership Team. Their commitment to improving our security posture has been instrumental in achieving this milestone.

Being the first school in Australia to achieve ISO27001 certification is a remarkable accomplishment, especially considering that fewer than 950 organisations across the country have attained this prestigious certification. It is a testament to Cranbrook School’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards in data security and privacy for our students and their families.

While we celebrate this accomplishment, we also recognise that achieving ISO27001 certification is not an endpoint but a continuous journey. We will remain vigilant and proactive in our efforts to protect the sensitive data of our School community and ensure that Cranbrook School remains at the forefront of data security in the education sector.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and rest assured that the safety and security of your children’s data are among our top priorities at Cranbrook School. Together, we are creating a secure learning environment where students can thrive and grow.

Music News – Week 9

Soiree

Last Thursday evening, our first Soiree of the year was held in Music Room 1.

Attended by 60 supportive parents, 25 boys performed brilliantly on a variety of instruments – violins, violas, cellos, clarinets, French Horn, guitar and voice. We were so proud of them!

The Year 4 String Quartet and Cello Duo played their pieces so well, and we were thrilled with their first soiree performances. Two parents also made amazing debut performances – Richie Murphy performed with his two sons, Miles and Leo, in a wind trio and Julian Gan’s stunning cello performance was accompanied by his talented Mum! A brilliant evening where the performances were polished and the students demonstrated commitment and excellence. Well done all!
