Dear Parents,
It was terrific to see so many fathers, grandfathers and other special males in our students’ lives attend last week’s Father’s Day morning. The boys and their dads enjoyed breakfast together before taking part in a wide range of fun activities. A huge thank you to all the Junior School staff, overseen by Deputy Head – Curriculum, Genét Erickson Adam, who organised and ran the fun activities for our families to enjoy. Please follow this link to view photos from the morning.
Year 12 Farewell Assembly
Next Monday, we will welcome to the Junior School our current Year 12 students who started in Dickins House (K-Y2) along with their families, to say farewell. We look forward to wishing them well as they take the next steps towards a new chapter in their lives. The occasion will also be a lovely opportunity for the students to reminisce with some of their former Junior School teachers.
Student-led Conferences
Next week our K-5 Student led Conferences (SLC) will be held. Parents are warmly invited to spend a couple of hours with their son who will explain his learning. Please see the ‘From the Deputies’ section in this newsletter for the specific information about these conferences.
Staff News
This Friday, we say thank you and goodbye to Mrs Paula Noble, our JS Psychologist, who leaves us after 7 years of loyal and dedicated service. Paula will be moving to a part-time role at Shore and commencing her own private practice. We wish her great happiness and good health.
Next term, we welcome back Ms Chloe Mitcham who has been on extended leave overseas. Whilst away in the UK, Chloe married her partner, Ed, and we warmly congratulate them both. With Chloe’s return, we say farewell to Ms Kate Hawes who has been working as an Educational Development Teacher during Chloe’s period of leave.
Next term, after a year’s maternity Leave, we welcome back Ms Nicky Breedt to the Junior School. Nicky will be Class Teacher on 6D when Mark De Brún takes a period of extended paternity leave.
During Term 4, Y6 Case Manager, Ms Kerry Duncan, will be taking a well-deserved period of long service leave. We will shortly inform parents about Kerry’s replacement during this period.
This week, we warmly welcomed back Mrs Fiona Donnelly, returning to the Junior School after her maternity leave, during which Killian and Fiona welcomed their second son, Fionn. Fiona will be working across K-Y2 during Term 4.

Student-Led Conferences

We look forward to seeing parents of students in Kindergarten to Year 5 at school next week to celebrate student learning at the Student-led Conferences.
Tuesday 13 September | Kindergarten 8:30 – 10:30am | Year 3 11:15 – 1:15 |
Wednesday 14 September | Year 1 8:30 – 10:30am | Year 4 11:15 – 1:15 |
Thursday 15 September | Year 2 8:30 – 10:30am | Year 5 11:15 – 1:15 |
Please note that the Year 6 students will present their Exhibition in Term 4, in place of the Student-led Conference.
Why do we have Student-led Conferences?
What can you expect at the Student-led Conference?
Each conference will be allocated a block of time in the classroom and in each of the single-subject areas. Approximately 6-8 families may be conducting conferences in a classroom at the same time and up to 15 in the single-subject areas. During the conference, you will accompany your child through different aspects, planned by the teachers and students. You may be shown completed work, see demonstrations of skills and be told about the class and your child’s part in it. You might view special projects or be asked to participate in a learning task with your child.
It is important to remember that students will take full responsibility for leading the conference. They will have planned specific areas and rehearsed the conference in a specific order. Please allow them to proceed with their plan. Above all, expect your child to share his strengths and progress, as well as evidence of his knowledge, skills, conceptual understanding and approaches to learning. It is a fantastic opportunity for you to gain insight into your child’s learning, through the most important lens…his own.
End of Term Reminders
We remind parents that this term ends on Friday, 16 September at the normal time. Term 4 commences for all Junior School students on Monday, 10 October. All boys should return in full summer school uniform. Over the holidays, please check your son’s items to ensure he has not accidentally acquired something that belongs to another boy. The holidays are also a good time for the boys to have a haircut.
Our Pre-school children took part in Indigenous Literacy Day on Wednesday, organised by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. As part of our Reconciliation Action Plan, we aspire to connect authentically and to respectfully embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and cultures within our curriculum. This week, the Indigenous Literacy Day, celebrated stories, cultures and languages.
A group of children from remote towns in Northern Territory (Milikapiti and Jilkminggan) shared their story about their life in remote Australia. This event took place at the Opera House and our Pre-school children were able to watch a live streaming of the event. In addition to this, children brought in a gold coin donation to go towards the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). The ILF is a national charity working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander remote Communities across Australia. All donations to the Foundation will help put books in the hands of children in remote Indigenous communities.
For information about this day and other learning experiences that have taken place at Pre-school, please access the Digital Day Books.

As we have previously noted, our Head of Sport – JS, Tom Hart, has organised a charity event in September, which is very close to his heart. The event commences tomorrow, Friday, 9 September at 11pm. Tom will commence a Concept2 Marathon Row, Concept2 Marathon Ski, Concept2 Double Marathon Bike and finish with a Marathon road run. Tom’s aim is to finish all these marathons by 4pm on Saturday, 10 September.
The charity event will run from Befit in Double Bay. Tom would love as many people as possible to get involved. This could be through booking a spot in one of the Saturday classes or jumping in and joining him for as much or a little as they would like on one of the legs. Or some families, may wish to donate by following the link below. Hope Bereavement Care is a great charity and this event is a wonderful opportunity to increase the awareness around sudden loss and bereavement and the support available to people. The link to donate is: www.givenow.com.au/cr/hartforhope

The CSPA is advertising to parents across the whole School community for volunteers to support their Year Groups as parent representatives on the CSPA Committee.
We would like to hear from any parents who are interested in helping out with all years but specifically we need parents of boys going into Years 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10 and 11 for 2023. Some of our wonderful parents are staying on as year reps but we encourage parents to share these roles to better support parents.
The primary role of the CSPA is to support Cranbrook School, particularly the parent community, fostering goodwill and creating a community that is inclusive and welcoming to all.
More information about what the CSPA does can be found on Cranbrook Connect here:
https://cranbrookconnect.cranbrook.nsw.edu.au/parents-association/introduction-and-rep-list.aspx
and you can read about the Year Group representative role here:
https://www.cranbrook.nsw.edu.au/content/pdf/CPA_YearGroup_ParentRep_OCT13.pdf
If you are interested in joining our Committee, please fill out a nomination form and send it to the CSPA secretary. Nominations for positions close on 12 October 2022 ahead of the CSPA AGM on 16 November at which the 2023 Committee will be elected.
I will be stepping down at the end of this year after three years as President of the CSPA. In accordance with the School and CSPA Constitutions, nominations for the role of President are considered in consultation with the School Council.
If you would like more information about any of the roles and what is involved, please get in touch with either Sam, Nonie or myself. Our details are on the CSPA page of Cranbrookconnect.
Many thanks
Susie Fuller
CSPA President
