Message from Michele Marquet, Acting Head of School

Dear Parents and Carers,

One of Cranbrook’s underpinning values is respect. As we look around our world, it seems harder today than in the past to see great role models of respect amongst our leaders or people represented in the media. Our students receive very mixed messages about what respect should look and sound like, all the more confusing for them as they grow and develop from childhood to adulthood.

Often when we think of respect in terms of younger people, we consider how they might engage respectfully with those who are older. And that should be – it is very important for our students to demonstrate that respect towards their teachers, parents and the adults they come into contact with both at school and outside of our gates. But, as a school, we also believe that respect should be the cornerstone of how our students relate with their peers too. And that can be a far more challenging goal for them.

Through our wellbeing programmes, we strive to help them understand that none of our differences – whether based on ethnicity, politics, religion, cultural tastes and preferences, or gender – are nearly as significant as the humanity we share. Demonstrable respect for others, peer or otherwise, shows we have grasped the concept that what we have in common as humans far outweighs any differences there may be.

As we talk to our students, most would say they respect others, but we try to help them understand this cannot be true unless it is seen in the way we speak, the words we choose and the actions we take with everyone else, not just those we count as friends. Words and actions: these matter both when the person is in front of us and perhaps even more so these days, when they are not physically present, such as when we might be online. It is also doubtful that our students are truly respectful if they are more focused on being funny at someone else’s expense, than showing kindness. We are so grateful for the support of our families as we try to help their sons build a truly respectful view of other people and understand what that means in terms of how we speak to and about others.

Over this term, we have been trying to help our students’ focus shift to how we can best show respect to others. We have been considering ways we can be positive in our interactions. Questioning whether what comes out of our mouths builds up someone else, or pulls them down, has been a good place to start, as has helping students to see that we all make hundreds of choices about how to interact daily. It can be incredibly empowering to know there are ways we can modify or adjust our choices, moment by moment, to establish habits of daily life that serve the goal of creating greater social harmony in our School and where we live. We also want our students to grasp that being respectful does not mean people can never disagree: learning how to disagree with civility is absolutely vital. It is far more about how we might disagree than the fact of disagreeing. Being respectful is also about how we resolve matters when we have said or done the wrong thing. As our students get older, we recognise the importance of them truly grasping that if we will not apologise or we refuse to see we can make mistakes, it is doubtful that we are being truly respectful.

Respectful kindness is ‘anything we do to show other people that we take them seriously.’  As Australian social commentator, Hugh McKay notes, ‘Nothing says, ‘I take you seriously quite so eloquently, or as kindly, as attentive empathic listening’.  Helping our students to be able to stand in someone else’s shoes before they decide to do or say anything in response, is really the key to showing respect in most contexts. Cranbrook should be a place where everyone is respected, and that starts with how we each show respect for one another. For our students, that especially means those who are not their best friends or mates. Our true character is revealed by how we treat those we believe can do nothing for us. We want to challenge our students to consider what is revealed to the world in their treatment of others. Leading through service starts at School by each student using one of the most powerful tools in their possession, their speech, to make life for someone else better, no matter who they might be, by being kind in what they say.

Wishing everyone a wonderful week.

Message from Richard Baker, Acting Head of Junior School

Dear Junior and Pre-school families,

I would like to congratulate Sophie Boniface and our Year 6 students who took home a brilliant second place at the recent State Theatresports competition last week. Our students were energetic, collaborative and especially entertaining as they created a rendition of Goldilocks and the Three Bears as a romantic comedy.

I have spoken to our students this week about ensuring we all keep our expectations high in the last few weeks of school in our attitude and work ethic. With only a few weeks left of term, it is important our students stay focused until the very last day of school prior to the summer holidays.

This Saturday sees our last Summer Sport fixture for the term and we wish all the players the best for their final fixture.

We are looking forward to next week’s special events, including the K-Y2 Carols Service as well as the Y3-Y6 Christmas Lunch and the Y3-Y6 Swimming Carnival.

Pre-schools’ News – Week 6

Pre-schools’ News – Week 6

Dear Families,

This week, our Pre-schoolers at St Mark’s and St Michael’s who will be transitioning to Kindergarten were treated to a wonderful visit from the Kindergarten teachers, Mr Baker and some of our former Pre-school students. They shared all about what life is like in Kindergarten! The children had a chance to ask questions, and the former students gave them great insights into what to expect next year—like new friends, exciting learning activities, and fun routines. It was an inspiring session that really sparked some excitement about the transition to Kindergarten.

Our St. Michael’s groups also had their much-anticipated church visits this week. The children were excited to learn more about the church, its traditions, and how we can all help others in our community. A huge thank you to all the families who generously donated to our Toys ‘n Tuckers collection. Your support means so much to those in need, and your donations will bring joy to many families this holiday season. We are proud of the children for being so thoughtful and caring!

Little Leagues Report – Round 11

Round 11 was a hard-fought round of sport and what has stood out for me, is the attitude and focus our students have demonstrated in their matchups across all sports. With just over a week remaining on the Junior School sporting calendar, including Round 12 this weekend and the much-anticipated Swimming Carnival next Friday, 29 November, I encourage all students to continue giving their best. Let’s bring our strongest efforts and the best of our School spirit to these final events of the year.

Tennis

A Team vs Knox
3-9 (26-42) loss

In our matchup against the juggernaut Knox, the students quickly displayed consistency and attacking play in doubles. Alex T and Blake H took an early lead, while Josh M and Hugo B worked in unison at the net, moving fluidly around the court. Matthew Z and Ricky C were unlucky in their doubles match, battling to a 3-3 tie before narrowly falling short in the final game. Ricky, however, bounced back in his singles match, securing the team’s first win of the day with a thrilling 3-2 victory. Josh M also impressed with his mental resilience and smart decision-making, setting a high standard of tennis. A special mention goes to Hugo B (Year 3), who stepped up to the A’s as a late call-up. His finesse and clever play captivated both parents and students, rounding out a competitive round of tennis. The team was strong in singles, but there is room for improvement in doubles heading into the next matches. It was a commendable effort against opponents with national rankings and tournament-winning experience.

B Team vs Scots
5-7 (29-39) loss

The Junior B team put in a valiant effort, narrowly losing to Scots 29-39. Nate S-W and Henry R claimed a doubles victory, with Nate’s reliable groundstrokes and Henry’s net play proving decisive. Rory M and Harvey C played an intense doubles match, full of long rallies, but the 2-5 scoreline didn’t fully reflect the quality of their performance. In singles, George Y delivered a standout match, using dominant forehands and patience in long rallies to secure a nail-biting 3-2 win. Toby W’s match was equally gripping, as he fought hard on every point but narrowly lost 3-2. Hugo C-B impressed with his powerful groundstrokes, winning 3-2, while Henry W’s consistent topspin forehand and strong court coverage earned him a decisive 4-1 victory.

Basketball

Round 11 brought intense matchups and showcased the teams’ resilience, teamwork and determination as they continued to develop their skills and strategies late in the season.

The 5/6G team put up a strong fight, improving significantly in the second half but narrowly losing 18-22. Sammy I stood out with exceptional leadership in both defence and offence. The 5/6H team showcased disciplined play, successfully implementing the ‘Floor is Lava’ offensive strategy under their coach’s guidance. Cohen S, synchronised the team’s attack, despite a 7-22 loss.

The 5/6E team faced a challenging match, losing 29-52, but their effort was commendable, with Rhys’ accurate shooting being a highlight. Defence remains a focus for improvement in future training sessions. Similarly, the 5/6F team played hard in a fast-paced game but were outmatched by Trinity’s precision, ending 7-28. Sacha A’s determination and never-give-up attitude were key takeaways.

Cricket

It was a tough weekend for many teams against strong opposition, providing valuable learning experiences despite several results not going our way. Cricket is a unique blend of individual effort within a team dynamic, and success comes from mastering the basics and working together to excel.

There were bright spots, including the mighty 4A team’s 31-run victory, aided by Nathan S taking 4/12. The 4C, 3C, and 3B teams also performed well, with the 5B team pulling off a close win. Knox proved stronger in the 5A and 6A fixtures, demonstrating the importance of running hard and fighting for every opportunity. As we head into the final round before Christmas, let’s aim to finish the year on a high note.

Water Polo

Cranbrook’s Junior Water Polo team extended their impressive win streak to five games following a dominant performance against Shore. Building on their work during the week, the team focused on refining their press defence and improving ball protection during counterattacks.

Against Shore, the team got off to a scorching start, delivering a convincing first quarter with four unanswered goals, thanks to contributions from Felix C, Angus D, and Joseph L. The second quarter continued in the same vein, with the lead stretching to 10-0 as Ollie M, Sam S, Rylan H, and Luca M joined the scoresheet.

The team’s consistent press defence led to quick turnovers and numerous counterattack opportunities. Jack T-B and Charlie W added to the tally in the second half, securing a final score of 18-3. The boys excelled at drawing defenders and creating scoring options during counterattacks, a key strength in their play.

A takeaway from the game was the need to release passes toward the edges of the pool rather than the middle, ensuring safer ball progression.

Overall, the boys’ defensive pressure and offensive efficiency were the driving factors behind their significant win, furthering their impressive streak to five consecutive victories.

Head of Water Polo

Sailing

After a week of light winds, the students enjoyed sailing in a fresh nor’easter. Year 6 students continued to gain valuable experience sailing alongside senior school students in Pacers and competing against other schools. The rest of the squad raced against Scots, with all students showing significant improvement in their racing skills.

Tom Brewer
Head of Sailing

Multi-Sport

In Round 11, the students participated in Roller Towers, focusing on rolling, intercepting, defending and enhancing their communication skills. They explored strategies such as coordinated attacks and defensive formations to limit points, while emphasising the importance of respecting differing opinions during team discussions. Both teams demonstrated great effort and collaboration, with Blue vs. Red delivering an exciting start to the weekend.

JS Music News – Week 6

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As we draw closer towards Christmas and reflect on the tremendous efforts of all our musicians who performed this year, it is important to reinforce the power of practice and ensemble commitment.

Instrumental lessons and ensemble participation are an essential part of developing the instrumental skills to play music with other people, providing a wonderful opportunity to perform in a safe environment with like-minded peers. In a world that has us attracted to the latest shiny toy, it is important that your child’s participation in Music ensembles is prioritised ahead of other external activities which your child may wish to take part in. Beyond the musical skills that are being developed, we would like to ensure that students are demonstrating a commitment to the music programme of which they are an integral part.

Regarding your child’s instrumental lessons next year, I have no doubt that you may be starting to have a conversation with them about their instrumental lessons and plans for the year to come. Each year, enrolments rollover from the previous year unless a discontinuation form is completed by no later than Thursday, 5 December. This form is now available in Operoo. You may also be considering enrolling your child in the instrumental tuition group. Completing an enrolment form as soon as possible assists us to manage rooms and staffing for the coming year. Please reach out to our Music Administrator @Sandra Trew, or your child’s instrumental tutor, or Head of Instrumental Dept., if you have any questions.

Martyn Hentschel – Strings and Guitar

Anthony Pasquill – Piano and Voice
