The term continues to be busy with events and finishing off units of inquiry. Earlier this week, some of our singers headed to Goodwin Village to entertain their older residents with carols. Next week, our Year 6 boys share their Exhibition Learning Journey with their families and the broader school community. The end of the week will see all of Y2 -Y6 head to SOPAC for our annual Swimming Carnival.
Over the past four weeks, our Cranbrook Junior Red and Blue Debating teams have competed in an International Debating Competition online. We congratulate both teams on their achievements and wish our Cranbrook Junior Blue team (Ethan Goldberg, Sebastian Koczkar, Rahul Loomba and Ishy Somia) well as they progress to the Semi-Finals tomorrow evening.
Congratulations to our Junior School’s Theatresports team who participated in the regional final last week, held at St Andrew’s Cathedral School in the city. The team worked strongly, creatively and humorously and were placed first in a final of a very high standard from all schools participating. Their final ‘game’ was superb: an original Broadway Musical created on the spot. Wonderful teamwork was evident throughout from team members Julian Davison, Finn Dusseldorp, Ethan Goldberg, Monte Smith and Sebastian Trantalis. Enormous thanks to JS Drama Teacher, Sophie Boniface, and Speech and Drama Teacher, Amber Virtue, who spent many hours honing the boys’ drama skills. We look forward to participating again in 2023.
Current Address & JS Office Holiday Closure As we head towards the end of the year, it is most important that the School has your up-to-date address on our database. From the Deputies
Last Tuesday, our Year 5 students took part in a two-hour incursion run by ‘Courage to Care’.
It was a wonderful experience for all staff and students promoting acceptance across society through:
Creating awareness of the dangers of prejudice, racism and discrimination
Educating to challenge attitudes and behaviours
Demonstrating that every individual can make a difference
Transforming ‘bystander’ behaviour to ‘upstander’
The boys were mesmerised by the films and stories as the guest speakers recounted powerful narratives of rescuers and the people they saved – ordinary people performing extraordinary acts of courage. These Holocaust survivors shared their unique experiences.
The second part of the morning was a workshop where the students were encouraged to reflect on their own lives and how they can be ‘upstanders’ in their own world. By highlighting the extraordinary acts of ordinary people who intervened to save others, the survivor speaker stories showed our students that they too can be ‘upstanders’ – in our school and in the wider community.

Toys ‘n’ Tucker
The Pre-school community is invited once again to get behind the annual Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker drive. Donations are distributed through Anglicare’s Emergency Relief and Family Support programs to assist those in local communities who would otherwise go without. Cranbrook has been a part of the Toys ‘n’ Tucker for many years and have been strong supporters of the program.
As per previous years, we invite children to donate a toy to be stored in our Christmas basket, in preparation for delivery to the church next week and in the final week of term. Please do not wrap the toys as the volunteers will sort these items and distribute accordingly. May we also ask that the items are new. No second-hand toys please. Suggested items may also include older children in the 10-15 year age bracket.
This experience supports our ‘Contribute through Service’ School value statement, and also provides an early introduction to the attitudes of empathy; appreciation; curiosity and integrity. We appreciate your support, as we educate our youngest children about the importance of caring and giving to others.

Perspectives: Podcast Series – A Conversation with our Headmaster
Welcome to our new Perspectives podcast series. This is the first in a series of conversations between key members of our academic staff and our Headmaster, Nicholas Sampson.
In this inaugural podcast, Dr David Thomas, Hone Housemaster and longstanding School Historian, reflects on Nicholas Sampson’s achievements as a leader, delving back into his history as a Headmaster. They discuss what constitutes a truly liberal education, the vision for the School, the legacy a great School should leave behind, and how Nicholas’ own career so far has shaped his perspective.
Liberalism and education converge, as you are teaching people to gain a greater and deeper understanding of the truth.
From defining liberalism and the ultimate freedom it creates, to the rewards of teaching, the importance of conversations in corridors, the special genius of our School and the move to a more tertiary style of learning are all topics for discussion in this first podcast.
To listen please click here or on the graphic below.
We hope you enjoy this insightful conversation with our Headmaster and welcome your views and questions for the next release in the Perspectives podcast series, due for release in Term 1 2023, via Cranbrook@cranbrook.nsw.edu.au.

Changes to COVID-19 Isolation Period
From Friday, 14 October 2022, it is no longer mandatory to self-isolate at home, if your child tests positive to COVID-19. However, NSW Health strongly recommends people who are sick or have tested positive to COVID-19 stay home until their symptoms have gone. Please consider the impact on our community, if unwell children are at school.
Our Health Centre’s focus will still be on ensuring unwell students are sent home and stay home until well. Thank you for your ongoing understanding and sensible caution.
K-Y2 Christmas Celebration & Activities
On the last Monday of the term, students in K-2 will enjoy special Christmas Activities and their parents are invited to come onto campus at the very end to collect their sons and special craft from their classrooms. Details about this lovely event has been sent home recently.
Y3-Y6 Christmas Lunch
Y3-Y6 Christmas Lunch Volunteers Arrangements for our annual Christmas Lunch are underway. Families should have received an Operoo email explaining how parents may assist and how this process is organised, so we have some helpers from each year group (Y3-Y6). We are very grateful to those parents who are in a position to help on the day and thank them in advance for their assistance. Tomorrow is the last day to add your name to the list if you are able to help.
Barvember – Maths Challenge
Barvember!
Each lunchtime during November, Mr Scott Wells, 6W Class Teacher, opens his classroom for boys who love Maths to participate in the Barvember Lunch Club, an opportunity for older students who love Maths to grapple with some very challenging Maths problems. Between bites of lunch, the boys work hard together to apply to the challenges they receive the ‘bar method’ for solving problems. The energy and enthusiasm they exhibit is palpable! It is exciting that they keep coming back for more.
A permission note about the annual Y2-Y6 Swimming Carnival has been sent home via Operoo. Please complete this form online as soon as possible.
Little League Summer Sport Reports Round 11
Basketball Round 12
Basketball Year 5/6 As – Cranbrook 51 defeated Trinity 34
After a disappointing loss in round 11, the As were keen to get their season back on track against Trinity Prep. The As started in a full court man to man defence that court Trinity by surprise. Jaysal K lead from the front with several remarkable steals, leading to easy buckets. Andre M, Alfie T and William H had productive games on both ends of the court. However, the highlight of the game was Tyson B’s monstrous game, finishing off with 21 points. The As will be training hard this week, trying to finish the season off with an 11-1 record.
Basketball Year 5/6 Bs – Cranbrook 27 defeated Trinity 22
Cranbrook Bs had another strong win on the weekend. After a solid all-round effort in round 10, the Bs saw themselves down two players going into round 11. However, this was no distraction to the boys, who worked hard for the full 40 minutes to get the win. Vinnie B was instrumental with his rebounds, showing how to influence a game without scoring. Oscar R and James R had strong first halves, providing most of the scoring. Huw S, William A and Van G had strong second halves to ensure Cranbrook got over the line.
Basketball Year 5/6 Cs – Cranbrook 28 defeated Trinity 22
Without Darcy W this week the boys still managed to prevail and secure a nice 28-22 victory. Rahul W and Lachlan R-W were thrilling to watch, showing off their skills when shooting and defending. They took care of the Trinity big man and made it tough for small faster opponents to score close to the rim. Eddie N and Eddie F were all over the place in the best way possible, stealing and rebounding when we needed it most. Our duo of Logan H and Jake C made sure the Trinity boys despite trying to make a comeback could not comeback, pointing points on points on the board for us.
Basketball Year 5/6 Ds – Cranbrook 25 defeated Trinity 23
The Ds had a close call on Saturday in their absolutely invigorating 25-23 victory over Trinity. The boys started off well, gaining a comfortable lead and stopping Trinity at all ends. Seb K, Sam F and Jimmy D were handed the tasks of taking on the tallest boys on Trinity, and as always, they did an excellent job! Heath C was on his game, putting in the effort when we needed it most, blocking shot after shot. Aidan M, Jamie P and Charlie R made sure we had enough juice in the tank or should I say points on the board to beat this tough Trinity squad.
Basketball Year 5/6 Es – Cranbrook 43 defeated Trinity 13
What a game this was to be a part of. The boys came out firing from the tip off, outscoring and out defending the trinity side from the games beginning. Their offensive presence and their defensive intensity as an entire team is what made this game so impressive. Although a few individual performances are worth mentioning, including Harry R 22 points, as well as Hugh T 14 points, and 4 blocks, their achievements, whilst looking like their own on the stat sheet, were largely made possible due to the passing and unselfish nature of Cranbrook’s offensive game. These unselfish qualities lead to almost every player contributing to the games score, leading to Cranbrook’s impressive win over trinity prep, with a final score of 43-13 WIN.
Basketball Year 5/6 Fs – Cranbrook 22 defeated Trinity 12
The year 5/6 Fs started the game off neck and neck with the strong Trinity side. Both teams scoring and defending excellently from the opening minutes of the game. Despite this, our very own Cranbrook side began to push themselves further and further away from Trinity prep, working together to get the win for their school. A great thing about this game was that there was no standout performer, all individuals on the team made equal contributions to the final score, highlighting their strong team chemistry and unselfish playing style. This was another great game to watch, with a final score of 22-12.
Basketball Year 5/6 Gs – Cranbrook 12 drew with Trinity 12
This was an intense match from tip off. The trinity side tested our skills on all facets of the game, from shot creation ability, to collective positioning on defensive and stamina – which considering we only had 6 players, was of highest importance. Trinity started off with an early lead, scoring 8 points in the first half versus our 4. However, after having a quick break at half time and regaining their spirits and their strength, they came out firing early in the second half lead by the Michael M on the offensive end, and Nick D on the defensive. Although outscoring the strong trinity side this half, the boys unfortunately had to settle with a 12-12 draw. Despite the disappointing nature of not getting the win, the draw is an excellent representation of the intensity of this game.
Basketball Year 5/6 Hs – Cranbrook 22 defeated Trinity 18
The year 5/6 Hs began the game slow, struggling to hit shots and organise themselves on the defensive end, leading to Trinity prep scoring 6 quick points early in the first half, henceforth putting a large dent into our spirit and confidence levels. However, shortly after, the boys rethought their offensive tactics and began to score goal after goal, being led by the offensive threats of Zac G and Curtis M who each scored 14 and 6 points respectively over the course of the game. Their leadership on the offensive end sparked confidence in everyone else on the team, leading to increased defensive intensity, and more offensive options. This was a great game for Cranbrook basketball, with a final score of 22-18.
Basketball Year 3/4 As – Cranbrook 42 defeated Grammar St Ives 17
The As started the game tremendously, playing great defence which lead to many fast break
layups on the offensive end. Special mention must go to Kiran J and Oli H for their
outstanding shot making that was sustained throughout the whole game. Also, if it weren’t for Seb
D and Charlie R defence, our offence would not have been able to thrive as much as
it did. This was a great team win and the boys should be proud of their efforts.
Basketball Year 3/4 Bs – Cranbrook 15 defeated Grammar St Ives 6
The boys came out ready against Grammar St Ives, starting the game with a couple of steals that led to Rhidian S and Ryan H baskets. After our quick run in the first half, the boys let the
game slip a little. The lack of shot making, and poor defence allowed Grammar to somewhat
comeback. We were able to close out the game in the second half thanks Santiago D
defence and offence.
Basketball Year 3/4 Cs – Cranbrook 12 defeated Grammar St Ives 7
The game started with a couple of quick layups by Ryan M, allowing Cranbrook to set the
tone early. However, the lead started to dwindle away after Grammar successfully throw full court
passes that went right over the defence’s heads. After adjusting our defence to stop this, we were
able to stop them from scoring for an extended period. Hugo S and Rhys A made
many shots towards the end of the game to seal the deal for the Cranbrook win.
Basketball Year 3/4 Ds – Cranbrook 23 defeated Grammar S Ives 8
To start a full day of basketball at Cranbrook, the Ds came to Danger ready. Two boys stood
out during that game and that was Samuel S incredible defence and never-ending motor,
and Frank T for his defence and overall unselfish play. This win was thanks to a full team
effort that the boys should be proud of and should look to replicate this for all future games.
Basketball Year 3/4 White 1 – Cranbrook 16 defeated Grammar Edgecliff 2
Another convincing win 16-2. With only 1 sub, the boys worked so hard and continued that trend the whole game. Jamie had his best game of the season and showed it through his new pivoting skills to find space for a pass. Jai was unreal, showing off his dribbling and basketball IQ.
Basketball Year 3/4 White 2 – Cranbrook 26 defeated Grammar Edgecliff 18
A close game to continue the undefeated season, the boys came up against Grammar and came away with a win 26-18. The boys were gutsy in defence and learnt that when they commit to teamwork, the points start to come. Carlitos C clearly came to play in defence while Lachlan B and Jonathan H showed his speed and dribbling as he ran up the court.
Basketball Year 3/4 Blue 1 – Cranbrook 36 defeated Grammar St Ives 0
The Cranbrook Blue 1’s won 36-0 against Grammar St Ives! A clean, thorough, and dominant win for the team that seemingly cannot be stopped. As a coach, it is truly a pleasure to see such a fantastic and diverse group of boys connect so well together into a synergistic cohesive unit. The blue 1s can do it all: passing, rebounding, defending, dribbling, and shooting. But, more important than any of the attributes, the boys possess an inimitable competitive and positive spirit that will carry them far. Well done team!
Basketball Year 3/4 Blue 2 – Cranbrook 10 defeated by Santa Sabina 29
The Cranbrook Blue 2’s lost 10-29 against Santa Sabina College. The boys demonstrated a strong group mentality coming into the game against a seemingly bigger opposition. It was a close match at first, but the opposition got ahead as Cranbrook gave away too many fast-break points. In training, greater emphasis will be placed on getting back on defense and improving our ‘court vision’ so that we can see where all opposing players are at all times, therefore preventing easy opposition points. Nonetheless, it was great to see the team give it their all on the weekend – a reflection of their improving chemistry and tremendous passion. Well done!
Cricket Round 12
Year 6A Cricket – Cranbrook defeated by St Ives Grammar
The mighty 6As travelled out to St Ives for a big game against Grammar on a hot Saturday morning. Winning the toss and bowling first we got off to a great start with Johnny Y taking a wicket off the very first ball. However, some short bowling from the boys allowed Grammar to use the short boundaries and get to a tough total of 201 off their 20 overs. Despite a valiant effort from the boys unfortunately we fell 50 runs short being bowled out for 150 off 18 overs.
Year 6B Cricket – Cranbrook defeated St Aloysius
One week after suffering their first loss at the hands of St Aloysius, the 6Bs were forced to confront their demons and face their old foes once again. Having won the toss and deciding to bowl, you could really sense this was more than a game to the young lads, this was revenge. Having steam rolled the opposition for a mere 39 runs after dominant displays from Pocket Rocket Pete and Jake the Snake Ranson, the match was all but over. However, the dominance would only continue as blistering innings from Andrew Mr consistent Harris and Charlie ‘Don’t bowl there’ Wright. The lads were not only so dominant that they won by a whopping 7 wickets, but to ensure the game wasn’t over too quickly the umpires had to alter the laws of the game. The revenge arc was well and truly complete by this juggernaut of a side. They continue to impress and leading into their final week of junior school cricket, I fear for trinity grammar school. Onto the next.
Year 5A Cricket – Cranbrook 166 defeated Mosman Prep 64
The Year 5As won on the weekend against a weak Mosman team. Having lost the toss, we went into bay first. It went in our favour with the boy’s keen to make a big total. The boys were brilliant all round, with Emile G and George A hitting big numbers with the bat. Alertness in the field was much improved from previous weeks and our bowling figures were also good with Alistair T and Tommy A picking up majority of the wickets. The boys still need to work their positivity in the field and not let heavy overs affect their overall performance. A strong game and much to look forward to in the coming week.
Year 5B Cricket – Cranbrook 39 defeated by Tudor House 89
The Bs were put to the test by a strong Tudor House outfit on Saturday. Cranbrook won the toss and elected to bowl. Cranbrook’s bowling performance improved, with Ishy S taking two nice wickets and Zac S bowling very economically. The runs set however were proved to be far too little, with Tudor House cruising to 89 runs. Some tough fielding and bowling by Tudor House costed the boys 8 wickets and were limited to a score of 39 runs. It was a tough game for the Bs but they did well to keep their spirits up.
Year 5C Cricket – Cranbrook 162 defeated Waverley 76
The Cs lost the toss and were sent into bat against Waverley. Our opening partnership of Bondi M and Steven H got us off to a fast start, with Steven H scoring 32* in a flurry of boundaries in the first four overs. Cranbrook put in their most complete batting performance of the year so far, losing no wickets over the course of the innings, and setting a competitive total of 162 to win. Cranbrook made light work of the Waverley batting order, limiting the number of extras they bowled and bowling tight lines. Special mention to Teddy C on his bowling abilities and Henry W, who took one wicket whilst being very economical. Cranbrook restricted Waverley to a score of 76 in just 16 overs, making them comprehensive 86 run winners.
Saturday was a brilliant day for the 4A boys, batting first in wonderful summer conditions for our first fixture at Dangar for the season. An enormous batting performance from everyone up and down the order saw us post 4/158, a total which is unlikely to have been matched by many other 4As sides in the past.
But with ball in hand, we were equally aggressive and destructive. Cranbrook took 11 wickets, many of which were clean bowled, with a particular highlight being a stumping by Oliver F off the bowling of Jack R.
All in a great performance which the boys will hope to replicate for the final fixture of the year next week.
Early start for Cranbrook 4Blue at Queens Park, with multiple fields and lots of sport at Queens Park it was a challenge to find the pitch that we would be playing on. Cranbrook won the toss and elected to bat, Otto Y and Austin M were our first pair with great running between the wickets taking the 1s and 2s hitting the bad balls to the boundary on a slow out field. Cranbrook’s second pair to bat was Felix C and Tomek O the boys once again continued to push ahead ticketing over the scoreboard, George F and Angus D were the next pair to bat the boys showed great intent with the bat taking some sneaky runs as the drop the ball at their feet and took off, Joseph L and Otto Y were the final pair for Cranbrook and put the nail in the coffin to boost Cranbrook’s score to 5/75 runs. Cranbrook were ready to bowl with Joseph L taking the new ball with a great first over, a wicket maiden which set the tone of the bowling innings. Wickets went to George F 1, Tomek O 1, Angus D 1, Otto Y 1, Joseph L 1 and Austin M 2. Cranbrook were able to take 7 wickets in the bowling innings to really boost our total to 110. Once again, a great performance from the boys, another win in the bag with 1 game left to go undefeated for the Term 4 season.
Year 4Red Cricket – Cranbrook 4Red 86 defeated by 95 Grammar Edgecliff
Cranbrook 4Red team arrived at the ground ready to play and were full of energy. We won the toss and elected to bowl first, with 5 players we knew it was going to be a challenge. Cranbrook bowled extremely well picking up 5 wickets and restricting Grammar to 50 runs, Charlie H bowling 3 overs had the ability to move the ball in and away from the batsmen earning himself 3 wickets in these overs. Wickets went to Henry C-S 2, George Y 1 and Charlie H 3. At the end of the 1st innings Cranbrook had given themselves a 25-run bonus before even picking up the bat. Henry C-S and George Y opened the batting and ran between the wickets taking the 1s and hitting the bad ball to the boundary, Cranbrook’s next pair were Alec R and Jack E continued to push the score alone and really give Cranbrook a chance to win the game, the final pair was Charlie H and Henry C-S who really showed everyone how to run between the wickets and put the bad ball over the fences and alone the ground for 4. It was a great batting innings. The boys posted a score of 61 runs with the caveat being losing 9 wickets during our innings to give Grammar the win. Overall, it was a great performance and at the end of the day it’s about being outside and playing cricket with your mates and having some fun and I strongly believe these young men had a great time on Saturday. With 1 game to go the boys are keen to finish on a high note.
Year 3A Master Blasters – Cranbrook 157 defeated Knox 60
The 3As had a compelling 97 run victory against Knox at Yeldham Field. After losing the toss and being sent into bat, Cranbrook put on 157 runs. James C top scored with 41 off 10 balls. Cranbrook bowled and fielded accurately, restricting Knox to 60 runs off their 12 overs. The boys are looking forward to another good performance in their final fixture this weekend.
Year 3B Master Blasters – Cranbrook defeated St Ives Grammar
The 3Bs were convincing winners on the weekend against St Ives Grammar. The game was competitive throughout, with Cranbrook bowling first. In this innings, Leo S’s bowling was very tidy, producing ten dots in his two overs. This pressure also forced a wicket, and others were taken by Julian D and Alexander R. James M, though, was arguably the pick of the bowlers – his leg breaks were unplayable and show great promise. In our batting innings, runs were shared amongst the team with all players hitting boundaries. This kept the team on track, until Joe R and Oliver D’s barnstorming partnership at the end saw Cranbrook take the game away from Grammar and sign off on the day’s proceedings in dominant fashion. This is a talented group who are enjoying their cricket and should look forward to a positive season.
Year 3C Master Blasters – Cranbrook defeated St Ives Grammar
The 3Cs produced a dominant performance on Saturday against St Ives Grammar. Julian D’s bowled very effectively, picking up a wicket and only conceding his five runs from a wide that saw the tee shot hit for four. His focus and leadership in the field and whilst running between wickets were very influential and a feature of his man of the match performance. All players were fantastic with the bat, with none of them striking less than three boundaries. Continued focus on calling and remaining still at the crease will see these talented batters progress further still in coming weeks, where they will certainly prove a handful for any school they face.
Tennis Round 12
Tennis As – Cranbrook 34 drew with Kings 34
It was another sunny morning for the A Team with plenty of good tennis on display for all to enjoy. The doubles fixtures were closely contested with a special mention to the well-earned win by Sebastian T. and Charles T. The singles games were full of fantastic returns and great rallies. Will M and Alex T. gave their all to win some vital points for Cranbrook. The students are excited to play their final fixture next Saturday in Round 12.
Tennis Cs – Cranbrook 40 defeated Scots 28
Spirits were high and rackets were ready for Saturday’s fixture against Scots. The students were eager to out their best foot forward against local opposition. The result was a super win with a final score of 9-3 to Cranbrook. Ethan G. and Alex B. credited their fantastic communication to their doubles victory. Ashton D. and Miles M. were focused and dedicated to every point to earnt heir singles victories. The students eagerly await their final fixture.
Multi-Sports
On Saturday, the multi-sporters were split into Team Blue and Team Red for a game of Tee-Ball. Both captains Yanni A and Henry M demonstrated superb resilience and hard work throughout the session. Both Team Blue and Team Red were held to share the victory with a 32-run draw. Outstanding running performance from Lucas Z with the highest running score of the day (9 runs). Overall, all the boys have shown fantastic improvement in their striking ability.
Sailing
The boys showed great growth out on the water today while practicing navigating in low winds. The boys have becoming more confident and independent in differing conditions. It is great to see the boys showcasing great teamwork and encouragement when helping each other out during set up, pack down and out on the water.
Music – Week 6
Year 3 Instrumental Concert
The culmination of the Year 3 Instrumental program was celebrated last Tuesday afternoon. Every boy played for their parents, grandparents and friends in small groups and then together in the String or Band ensemble. We are delighted that so many boys have chosen to continue their instrumental journey next year, are joining ensembles and having private lessons on their individual instruments.
Year 2 String Concert
After a year of lessons and rehearsal in small groups on violin, viola, cello and double bass all of Year 2 joined together last Friday to perform together in the gym. Parent, grandparents and friends attended and were delighted to hear the amazing results they achieved. Many students are now having private lessons on their instrument and will continue on the Strings next year. Others will move unto woodwind, brass and percussion instruments for the exciting Year 3 instrumental program. What an amazing opportunity!
