Over the course of last week, Year 4 played Terra Fabula, an immersive experience that guided them through a series of challenges and inquiries to create their own fictional land and people. Students employed their geographical, scientific, mathematical and English skills, as they mapped landscapes, built communities and shared resources. But what happens when Explorers arrive? And then Settlers?
The students were cognitively and emotionally so engaged in the creation of their island worlds and this experience has helped them grasp the implications of when other people take over the place where you live and love. It has truly set them up for their next unit of inquiry! Thanks to Mr Brett Rolfe (Director of Strategy, People and Culture) for his creation of Terra Fabula and his guidance of the students through the process with the Year 4 Teaching Team.

Message from Michele Marquet
Dear Parents,
We have been very busy! Last week, so many of the students in K-Y6 enjoyed a variety of activities during Games for Moh Day, superbly organised by Mr Holmsen and led beautifully by our Cranbrook Community Service representatives. In Year 4, students engaged in a fabulous immersive experience Terra Fabula, created and led by Mr Brett Rolfe and the Year 4 teachers. During Assembly, Year 5 reflected on the experience of our da Vinci Day and its benefits for students from Cranbrook and Ascham.
This week, Year 3 and Year 5 students and staff enjoyed a few wonderful days away at their camps located in the Blue Mountains and on Port Hacking, respectively, in fine and mild conditions. The opportunity to forge closer bonds and take part in a wide variety of outdoor experiences often creates wonderful memories for many of our students that they never forget. Enormous thanks to our staff who attended these camps, looking after the students and helping them to have a great time. Also, this week, the Junior School has been filled with the beautiful sounds of our students singing and creating music as the entire school has been busy preparing for our Showcase performances. Please see the detailed information in the Music section, so you know in which concert(s) your son is involved and details about those events and relevant rehearsals.
We were blessed with cloudy but relatively dry weather today for our very successful K-Y2 Athletics Carnival. Families enjoyed being on campus to see their sons who enthusiastically participated in a range of athletic skills, moving through 9 stations in class groupings. Thank you to our PDHPE Staff Team, James Roughan, Josh Cohen, Tommy Taylor and Lloyd Hardes for organising and managing today’s event with the wonderful support of the K-Y2 staff.
Families in Y3-Y6, please remember that there are no scheduled sports fixtures the weekend after next, on the Long Weekend (10 June).
A reminder to all our Junior School families that we are conditioned by Woollahra Council to NOT have our students dropped off or picked up by vehicle in Iluka or Elanora Streets, or in Manion Road. We frequently are contacted by our neighbours telling us some of our families are not following this rule. We ask you to please assist us to be a good neighbour and to not use this location in this way. Thank you so much for your help.
Kind wishes,
Michele Marquet
Games for Moh
Games for Moh, held last Thursday, was an enjoyable and successful fundraiser. For $5, students purchased a green wrist band which gave them access to unlimited plays on set-up game activities. Basketball Slam, Mini-Hoops, AFL/NFL Pass, Baseball Blast, Astro Flyer, and Speed Chess were among the many games available. Thank you to the Community Service Reps and teachers who helped set up and supervise the games stations. The total raised was over $2,000, which will help fund our World Vision-sponsored child Moh Nur and his community from Indonesia.
Thank you, Cranbrook families, for your continuing generous support.

K- Y6 Nude Food Day – Thursday, 8 June
What is nude food?
Next Thursday, 8 June, we are going NUDE! Nude food is simply food not wrapped in foil, plastic or commercial packaging. 8th June is World Ocean Day. Students are encouraged to bring to school wrapper free food on this day. This is our effort to raise awareness of the impact plastic pollution has on our oceans.
Did you know? The amount of plastic in the ocean is expected to double in the next 15 years, and by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in the sea (by weight)!
Please join us and make this day as wrapper free as we can get it!
Challenge – Which class will have the least wrappers?
Biggest Morning Tea Event
Through the amazing generosity of staff and students, over $1100 was contributed to the Cranbrook Junior School Parents’ Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea events last week. Thank you to our chief organisers, Amanda Smits and Daphne Hedley, ably assisted by a large contingent of parents. We will report the final total achieved shortly.
Learn to Swim Programme
Cranbrook’s Learn to Swim programme is pleased to announce that new spaces are now available for immediate enrolment. The programme has been designed to cater to swimmers of all ages and abilities, from beginners aged from 6 months to more advanced swimmers who want to refine their technique and become stronger and more confident in the water. If you are looking to enrol your child in a swimming programme, now is a great opportunity through the quieter season where you may receive more active learning time.
To make things even easier for parents and guardians, we have also introduced an online enquiry system for assessments. Our Learn to Swim team will get back to you with a response regarding the next available time slots for assessments. The assessments will ensure your child’s swimming ability is matched to the appropriate class based on their needs.
Cranbrook’s Learn to Swim pool will remain at 31 degrees Celsius all winter. This ensures that swimmers can enjoy the water in a comfortable and safe environment, even on the coldest days of the year. Our experienced instructors are passionate about teaching children to swim, and we use a range of techniques and tools to ensure that every child receives the support and guidance they need to progress. We believe that swimming is an essential life skill that every child should learn, and our Learn to Swim programme is an excellent way to achieve this goal.
It is official, we have a team: The Cranbrook Junior School will be represented at City2surf!
18! This is the official number of staff members who will take part in Sydney’s biggest sporting event of the year at the City2surf on 13 August 2023. Some participants will be walking, others will be running, but all of us will be doing it for a good cause. We are planning to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Institute and for the Cranbrook NGO, CETOP. So far, we have raised $484. Our aim is to raise $1,000.
If you are available on the day, we would love to see lots of Cranbrook Junior School students along with their families to support us on the streets around the school.
Another way to support us is to donate to one of the charities by clicking the links below:
Our Pre-schoolers had a fantastic trip to Bush School. It was wonderful to see all the children immerse themselves into the session and explore the natural outdoor classroom. For most of the children, it was their first experience going on an excursion. They were a delight to take on the excursion and we were very proud of them all.
A friendly reminder that the school gates do not open until 8:45am, and someone will come and greet you at the gate.
Kind regards,
Abigail McFarlane
JS Prayer Morning
Tomorrow, this Friday morning, 2 June, there is a prayer morning with Mr. Noble for any parents or carers in our JS community. It will be held at 8am in Music Room 2 on the Junior School campus. It is an opportunity for parents to come and spend time in prayer for each other and the school. We are planning on running these on the first Friday of every month during term time.
