Dear Parents,

It was exciting to see so many parents join us last Tuesday for a special session about how children learn Mathematics during the primary years and how they can support that learning. This workshop was conducted by our AIS Mathematics Consultant, Henrietta Miller. Most parents were then able to visit their son’s classroom to share in some of their learning in the areas of Science or Mathematics. Please see below for some photos of the day.

Our Junior School parents may have noticed that the parking signs along Kent Road between our School and the New South Head Road lights now restrict parking during school drop off and pick up times. We hope this improves traffic flow for our families and other users of Kent Road. However, please be very careful not to speed in the left hand lane to make the lights, as usually there are children and parents crossing New South Head Road. In fact, on Tuesday afternoon this week, a silver car ran the red light, nearly collecting several young students and their parents attempting to cross the road legally. It would be devastating for all should a road accident occur.

Next week is Book Week and we look forward to our students embracing our Book Week Parade on Wednesday, 24 August at 8:30am. Parents are welcome to join us as the students parade through the passive play area, once the carline has ended. Ms Light and our teachers have planned some other wonderful experiences for our students to celebrate the joy of reading too, including K and Y1’s Books at Bedtime on Thursday, 25 August at 5:30pm.

After careful consideration, given the current numbers of Covid cases in our city and the age group of most of the attendees, we have decided to postpone our annual Grandparents’ Day until Term 1 next year.

We have a busy few weeks coming up, with Book Week followed by the JS Production of ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’, our Music Eisteddfod, Fathers’ Day Activities and the Y12 Farewell Assembly. We look forward to sharing many of these events with our Junior School families.

After almost 7 years as our Junior School Psychologist, Paula Noble will be leaving us at the end of this term to take up a part-time School Psychologist position at Shore. We thank Paula for her wonderful support of so many of our students, families and staff members throughout her time with us. We wish her the very best as she moves into a new role at Shore and commences her own private practice as a Clinical Psychologist. We have started the search for someone to fill Paula’s position and we will inform our families as soon as an appointment is made.

Kind wishes

Pre-Schools’ News – Week 5

Parent Engagement Session – ‘Phonics and Early Literacy Development: The Pre-school Approach’

On Tuesday, 23rd August, we will be running a parent engagement session about our phonics program ‘Letters and Sounds’ at St Michael’s Pre-school.  The program aims to build children’s speaking and listening skills in their own right, as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonemic awareness, phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children, starting around the age of 4-5 years. During the session you will hear about the content of the program and see some of the activities in action. If you would like to attend, please email preschool@cranbrook.nsw.edu.au

Music News – Week 5

  • Year K-2 Lunchtime Concerts

Over the last two weeks, about 35 students from Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 gave the most marvellous performances at the Lunchtime Concerts held in Music Rooms 1 and 2. Our young musicians played piano, guitar, violin, viola and cellos, and we were so proud of them as they stood up, introduced their piece and played, and then bowed with great gusto. Please have a look at their photos below.

  • Year 3-6 Music Eisteddfod – Wednesday, 24 August, 1.30pm to 5pm.

Years 3-6 Music Eisteddfod applications have now closed, and we cannot wait to hear the students’ performances next Wednesday. Parents are very welcome to attend and we look forward in great anticipation to this exciting event!

Book Week

Next week, we will focus on this national celebration of Australian children’s literature and reading; as well as welcoming guest speakers and viewing theatrical book adaptations. Students will also catch up with their House Buddy Groups and witness the thrill of the Years 3-6 Spelling Bee Final!
