Y3-Y6 Christmas Lunch Volunteers
Arrangements for our annual Christmas Lunch are underway. In the next little while, our CSPA Vice President (Junior School), Angelique Haritos, will contact Y3-Y6 parents via an Operoo email to explain how they could assist and how this process is organised, so we have some helpers from each year group (Y3-Y6). We are very grateful to those parents who are in a position to help in different ways and thank them in advance for their assistance.
Parents should have received the Operoo permission form for the Lunch itself and our students were handed their hard copy invitation last Monday. Students should respond to the invitation in writing and then post it in the red mailbox in Reception. We are encouraging our students to do some jobs at home during the month of November, so they can raise some funds to help children in other parts of the world who may be experiencing a hard time at the moment.
Getting Ready for 2024
This week, we welcomed many of the new students who will join us in Kindergarten in 2024. Towards the end of November, we will hold our annual ‘moving up’ day for all our Junior School classes. New students in Y1-Y6 2024 will also join their intended cohort for the morning. These visits can help allay nerves, engender some excitement and allow our staff to get to know our new students.
On 23 November, our current Year 2 parents are invited to attend a parent information session about the year ahead. New families starting in Y1-Y6 will also be in attendance. Please follow this link for information about the session which starts at 8:30am. This information was sent out to Year 2 families recently via email.

Year 7 Scholarships (2025)
Parents of boys in Year 5 2023, who may be interested in applying for a Senior School scholarship for their son, should read the Scholarships 2025 information available now via this link.
Learn to Swim – Transport After School Lessons
Junior School families whose children have a Learn to Swim lesson after school (i.e. lessons that commence before 4:15pm) are able to book a seat for their child to travel on the Inner West bus that goes directly from inside the Junior School to the Senior School at the end of the school day each day of the week.
Students will be dropped off near the AFC and then walked from the bus to the pool by AFC staff and supervised while they get ready for their lesson. Parents can meet their sons at the pool. For ease when changing, it would be best if students with lessons wear their swimmers under their school uniform. Please email bus@cranbrook.nsw.edu.au if you are interested in booking a bus spot for your child and we will send a booking link once it is available. The cost is $100 per term.
We are also pleased to let parents know that if they prefer to pick up their child in carline or if their child has swimming lessons a little later in the afternoon, they can now make use of the school carpark next to the pool after 3:30pm to park during the LTS lesson.
We hope these new opportunities assist with the busyness of the traffic near the AFC in the afternoons.
Toys ‘n’ Tucker
The Cranbrook community is invited to get behind the annual Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker again. Donations assist those in our local communities who would otherwise go without.
Please, no second-hand gifts, chocolate, or anything else that can melt. Bring your unwrapped gifts and donations to your year level piazza. The final date for your donation is the day of our Christmas Lunch on Thursday, 30 November.
Suggested donations include long life custard, pasta sauce, tinned tuna/salmon/ham, Christmas cake & puddings, small packs of biscuits and small packs of lollies
Gifts for babies, children and teenagers include toys for all ages, vouchers, toiletry gift packs for teenagers, sports equipment, family games and books for all ages.
Resonate Series: Professional Learning
Our new Resonate series, written by our teachers, looks at classroom insights, research, leadership, and the future of education. The first article is written by our Director of Professional Learning, Cathleen Jin. Her article looks at how to create a holistic student experience by supporting our teaching staff and creating a culture of excellence.
As a school, we are ever conscious of our environmental footprint, and the increasing need for sustainable practices across each of our campuses. With this in mind, we are considering transitioning our school publications to a digital format, specifically our school magazine, EQV, produced twice-yearly and our yearbook, The Cranbrookian, produced once a year.
Whilst the benefits of a move to a digital format are clear; from a reduction in paper consumption, minimising energy usage and decreasing waste production, we understand that this transition might not suit everyone’s preference. As such, we would like to remind you to complete a quick survey to indicate whether you would prefer to keep receiving EQV and The Cranbrookian as printed publications, or you would be happy to move to a digital version.
Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to create a more sustainable future.
With thanks Cranbrook School
Pre-Schools’ News
This week, the children of St Mark’s and St Michael’s 3 Day and 5 Day Group visited the MCA, engaging in an early childhood program called ‘Marking Making/Meaning Making’. The purpose of this excursion was to support their thinking around the current unit of inquiry through opportunities to engage in appreciating creativity and artmaking. Working with Artist-Educators at the gallery, the children focused on the work of two artists in particular, Simryn Gill’s Maria’s Garden and the bark paintings from the Ramingining Collection.
Along with learning about these artists and their techniques, the children were asked to respond to these works through drawing and creating a collaborative garden on the gallery floor, using pieces of coloured felt and string. It was wonderful to see the children fill the gallery spaces and respond so thoughtfully and enthusiastically to both the space and the artworks.
An important aspect of the excursion was the opportunity for the children to work in the studio spaces of the National Centre for Creative Learning. Along with a fantastic ride up in the glass lift to the 3rd floor, the children experimented with mark-making materials and loose parts. Within the studio space is the Jackson Bella Room, an installation commissioned every year for the purpose of welcoming and encouraging young children to engage with contemporary art through the senses.
This opportunity to connect so intimately with the current commission Holding Ground by Lucy Simpson, was the highlight of the day for the children. They touched, smelled, moved, held and listened to familiar objects, such as seed pods, clam shells, coolamons and emu eggs, that had been recreated and moulded out of both natural materials, such as possum skins, and recycled materials, such as melted down televisions.
This was such a valuable experience for the children, to be out in our beautiful city, accessing and immersing themselves in the opportunities of a world class contemporary art space.
Kind regards,
Anna Herron and Melanie Fleming

K-Y2 Christmas Activities
On Wednesday, 6 December students in K-2 will enjoy special Christmas Activities and their parents are invited to come onto campus at the very end of the afternoon to collect their sons in person from their classrooms. Details about this lovely event will be sent home in the coming weeks.
Christmas Lunch
We are all looking forward to our annual Y3-Y6 Christmas Lunch in the Junior School Gymnasium. This week, our students in Years 3-6 received their personal invitation to this special lunch, to be held on Thursday, 30 November. Students in Y3-Y6 should handwrite an acceptance to attend the lunch and post it in the red ‘Christmas Lunch’ Post Box in Reception.
There is also a separate consent form for parents to sign which was sent to parents via Operoo today. Next week, our CSPA Vice President for Junior School will reach out to our families to ask if they would like to help with this event.
This year, with so many worrying things happening around the world, we have opted for a slightly simpler lunch menu which will come at a lesser cost, and we will still have all the fun activities we usually do as part of the lunch. We will be asking every Y3-Y6 student to consider what small jobs at home they could do to help to raise some money to donate to UNICEF. We are fundraising to support UNICEF, so they can continue their life-saving work for children. Every day, UNICEF is working around the world to help children realise their full potential by providing access to clean water, life-saving vaccines, quality education, and health care. UNICEF works to ensure every child is safe and protected from harm and is always there during times of emergency.
We hope the boys can feel happiness in knowing they have actively done something to help other children who are not living in such a peaceful and safe part of the world. Donations are, of course, entirely optional, but it would be wonderful, as a whole community, to collect a sizeable amount for this worthy cause. Details about what the boys will need to do and a link to make a donation can be found here UNICEF LINK and in the parent note on Operoo.
During the lunch, the students have the opportunity to meet staff from across the entire School, especially those who work in ‘behind the scenes’ roles. This can help our students come to appreciate how all these people work together to provide the wonderful education they are so fortunate to receive. The lunch is one way the Junior School staff and students say thank you to the many people who work at Cranbrook in non-public roles, but without whom we could not function!
We also ask our students to bring in a donation of non-perishable food and/or children’s gifts for Anglicare (Toys’n’Tucker). Information about this has already been shared in our newsletter.

Little League Summer Sport Reports Round 9
I am delighted to report on another successful round of sports at our school. Across all sports, I witnessed excellent effort and commitment from our students. It was heartening to see them participate with great vigour and demonstrate admirable sportsmanship throughout the day.
One particular highlight was the 6A basketball game, which came down to the wire and had a thrilling finish. The determination and teamwork displayed by both teams were impressive.
I’m also proud to share that our junior relay team competed at the NSW state championships last week. Their excellent commitment to training over the last few months was evident in the way they ran well in their heat. Unfortunately, they were disqualified on a technicality, but we want them to know how proud we are of their representation of our school.
I want to take this opportunity to remind our students that losing is valuable in its own right. It provides an opportunity to learn and improve, and it’s an essential part of the sports journey. Winning is important, but as we celebrate our victories, let’s not forget that there are always areas where we can grow and improve.
Yours in Sport,
Mr James Roughan
