Message from Michele Marquet

Dear Parents,

This week, our Y6 boys experienced some mixed weather at their annual camp in the picturesque surrounds of Camp Somerset on the Colo River. Nevertheless, reports on their enjoyment levels suggest they had a wonderful time! Our Year 4 students head to Waterslea on the Shoalhaven River on Monday for their annual camp. Next term, boys in Years 3 and 5 will have the opportunity to go to camp in the Blue Mountains and at Port Hacking, respectively.

Our camps can help all our boys to forge stronger friendships, assist new boys to find their place in our School and aid our teaching teams to strengthen their relationships with the entire year group. They are memorable experiences and careful planning has gone into the various activities that are on offer at each site. It is always great to see the boys on return: often quite tired, but with smiles! We thank the accompanying staff who worked so hard to ensure the boys had a safe and wonderful experience.

Coming up in the new few weeks, we will have some of our Y6 students attend World Prayer Day at St Michael’s Anglican Church and some of our younger boys travel to Ascham to participate in a GATEWAYS Science workshop with Mr Botto, while our K-Y2 students will have their final ‘Emmy & Friends’ lessons with Danielle. The term continues to be a busy and varied experience for our Junior School students.

Kind wishes,

Michele

Arrival Times
We have been focusing on positive relationships and high expectations with our Junior School students these past few weeks.  We are writing to ask for your support to ensure the school day starts promptly allowing the boys to get the most of out of each and every school day.

Please drop off your son between 7:45am and 8:10am sharp.  This will allow them to enter their classrooms at 8:15am, and then classes can start promptly on time.

We also encourage the boys in Years 4, 5 and 6 to walk into the Junior School campus using the walkway gate on Kent Road from 7:45am.

Further details on the K-6 Carlines can be found here on Cranbrook Connect.

JS Canteen Orders
Now that Term 1 is well underway, we have reverted to our usual practice whereby ordering from our JS Canteen will close every morning at 8am, so no new orders for that day will be able to be placed after 8am.

If a student is without their lunch, they will collect a token from JS Reception and present this to the JS Canteen at lunch time.

The Canteen will offer the student a choice of vegetarian California Roll or Teriyaki Chicken Rice Roll with a piece of fruit.

Cello Stands for the Junior School

The Junior School is delighted with their gift of new, hand-crafted cello stands from the Senior School. Mr Freeland, the Assistant Head of TAS (Technology and Applied Studies), and his students ensured the stands were crafted to strict tolerances. The Junior School’s Music staff and students would like to thank them for their fantastic efforts and kind generosity.

Dates for your Diary

Please follow this link to see an overview of some of the planned events for this term. We are looking forward to catching up with many of you over the next few weeks.

Pre-Schools’ Update

Our Pre-schoolers have settled into the first term ever so well and we are all very proud of them. This week, Pre-school welcomed Super Safe Harold for an incursion. Our Pre-schoolers enjoyed building their knowledge around issues of safety, such as road safety and sun safety. This linked well with children’s previous discussions on being Sun Smart.

Friendly reminder: Parent-teacher meetings start from next week. Please book in your time and complete the discussion form if you have not done so already.

Kind regards,

Abigail

Year 4 Camp

Next week, our annual camp for boys in Y4 takes place. Please check your son’s year level tab on Cranbrook Connect for additional information.

If your Y4 son requires medicine to be administered whilst on camp, please complete the relevant form by tomorrow, returning it to your son’s teacher. The medicine should be brought to School on the first day of camp by a parent and then be given to your son’s teacher.

Little League Summer Sports Report Round 2

Little League Summer Sport Reports Round 2

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our boys for their outstanding efforts during a busy week of sporting events. This weekend saw a fantastic display of talent across tennis, cricket, basketball, multi-sport, and sailing.

Our boys demonstrated great sportsmanship and teamwork throughout their matches, with several notable victories and performances.

I would also like to commend our boys for their efforts in the inaugural Cranbrook Junior School Swimming Invitational and the School Cross Country. It was inspiring to see the boys pushing themselves to their limits and representing Cranbrook with pride.

Overall, it has been a fantastic week of sport and I am proud of the effort and dedication shown by our boys. We look forward to seeing their continued growth and success both on and off the field.

Yours in Sport,

James Roughan

Basketball

Basketball Year 5/6 As Cranbrook 39 defeated Trinity JS 27

Coming off an internal game, the A’s got off to a slow start against Trinity. Passive defence allowed Trinity to score several uncontested layups. The slow start allowed the opposition to go up 12 points early in the first half. Rahul W had an instrumental impact on the defensive end, blocking and deflecting everything that came his way.

The second half saw Cranbrook control the game with great defence leading to easy offense. Kiran J and Oliver H brought great energy to the game, helping Cranbrook get over the line.

Basketball Year 5/6 Bs Cranbrook 33 defeated Trinity JS 22

Cranbrook B’s had a comfortable win on the weekend. The team came out strong on both ends of the court. Communication was key to the victory, with all players moving well, with and without the ball. The most impressive aspect was the sharp shooting the B’s displayed, especially Harry R with 12 points. Well done to Loic B for playing two games.

Basketball Year 5/6 Cs – Cranbrook 47 defeated Trinity JS 2

The Year 5/6 Cs had an outstanding 47-2 win against Trinity on the weekend. Eamonn R proved the importance of converting layups with his phenomenal 19 points! Meanwhile, Loic B demonstrated a clever awareness of where to space himself on the court to maximise offensive opportunities. Conceding only 2 points to the opposing team is an amazing feat by an impressive team. Well done boys.

Basketball Year 5/6 Ds – Cranbrook 38 defeated Trinity JS 12

The Year 5/6 Ds stormed through Trinity with a 38-12 win. On the offensive end, Michael I, Spike T and K. Buck carried the momentum with 10, 8 and 6 points respectively. Costa V’s court vision and strong defensive hustle further facilitated the boys’ momentum as their lead grew rapidly in the second half. The 5/6 Ds proved that they are a synergistic team with great offensive and defensive potential! Well done boys.

Basketball Year 5/6 Es Cranbrook 16 defeated by Trinity JS 18

The Year 5/6 Es played an absolute thriller verses Trinity on Saturday. Cranbrook came out on fire in the first half, with shots falling and the boys feeling confident. However, a quality Trinity outfit bit back in the second half, erasing Cranbrook’s first half lead. Both teams made some big baskets down the stretch, but Trinity secured the win with a basket with seconds left on the clock to go up 2 points 16-18.

Basketball Year 5/6 Fs Cranbrook 12 defeated by Trinity JS 21

The Year 5/6 Fs went up against an impressive Trinity team this week at Dangar. After an even struggle in the opening few minutes, Trinity began to build up a lead in the first half.  On defence, Cranbrook were slow to find their individual matchups, opening up some long passes for easy Trinity baskets. There was no lack of effort from the Cranbrook side. Despite a strong second half rally from Cranbrook, Trinity clinched this one 12-21.

Basketball Year 5/6 Gs Cranbrook 9 defeated by Trinity JS 16

The Year 5/6 Gs played valiantly against a solid Trinity side this week at Dangar. Cranbrook shot the ball with confidence, but a sturdy Trinity defence made it hard to find quality looks at the basket. Not to be disheartened, Cranbrook continued fighting and sharing the ball selflessly. Cranbrook were unable to get over the hump this time, with Trinity winning 9 points to 16.

Basketball Year 5/6 Hs – Cranbrook 6 defeated by Trinity JS 12

The Year 5/6 Hs played Trinity this weekend at Dangar. From the tip both teams fought hard, with possession of the basketball constantly changing hands. The Trinity defence made it tough to get the ball over half court, and as a result Cranbrook struggled to score. In the end, Cranbrook went down after battling hard the full forty minutes 6 points to 12.

Basketball Year 3/4 As – Cranbrook 16 defeated by Barker 29

The Cranbrook 3/4 As lost 16-29 in a close game against Barker who were led strongly by one player. Minato Y sparked Cranbrook’s comeback making some tough shots throughout the game to minimise Barker’s lead. William S also had two baskets and was crucial in our defensive stand picking up Barker’s best player every possession and not letting him out of his sight. Our big men Gus T and Frank T tried their best on the offensive and defensive glass with each of them recording 5+ rebounds but were unable to find open shots in a tight key. Santiago D was able to find passes throughout the game assisting Minato Y twice and Will S once. Good luck next week boys.

Basketball Year 3/4 Bs – Cranbrook 17 defeated Barker 9

The Cranbrook 3/4 Bs cruised to victory against a solid Barker opponent winning the game 17-9. Woody V H led the team alongside Henry W combining for 13 points. As the game got close towards the end Woody V H hit a clutch fade away and-1 getting sent to the line to seal the deal. However, it was Henry W’s defence that was pivotal in closing out the game as he recorded steal after steal and basket after basket. Teddy B was a beast throughout the game, he ran the floor hard and when he had the ball no one on the court was fast enough to keep up with him. Congrats to the Year 3/4 Bs on an outstanding win.

Basketball Year 3/4 Cs – Cranbrook 6 defeated by St Ives 26

The boys faced a disadvantage from the outset, playing St Ives’ A team. Despite this, the level of heart the boys showed was admirable to say the least. Ziggy S and Henry H showed tremendous tenacity that was consistent throughout the game regardless of what the score was. Most notably, Charlie B’s ability to turn defence to offense was a site to see.

Basketball Year 3/4 Ds – Cranbrook 20 defeated Barker 2

The 3/4 Cs had an absolute thrilling game against Barker coming out on top with a 20-2-point win! The constant hustle and running up and down the court, tired the Barker boys out and allowed for Wolf T to arrive at the perfect time to steal the ball and dribble his way to leading scorer of the game with 12 points. He lead the charge for the 18-point victory over Barker.

Basketball Year 3/4 White 1 – Cranbrook 2 defeated by Kincoppal 29

White 1 knew they had a fight on their hands during warmups, as their opposing Kincoppal team towered over them. Nonetheless, the boys entered the game with confidence in their ability. Wren L scored the opening basket for Cranbrook, but unfortunately that is where the scoring ended. A talented Kincoppal outfit made life hard for Cranbrook, but the effort couldn’t be faulted. Remi G had some good moments with ball in hand, but unfortunately our opposition was too good.

Basketball Year 3/4 White 2 – Cranbrook 15 defeated Barker 6

Cranbrook made the dawn-time pilgrimage to Hornsby for a showdown with Barker. The game opened with a flurry of baskets, as Neil M put on a finishing clinic. Barker stormed back into the game, but the excellent transition defence of Archie S and Alfie L-B managed to thwart numerous Barker attacking raids. In the second half, Albert L set up camp at the charity stripe showing off his post game and drawing foul after foul, then converting his free throws patiently. Cranbrook ended up overpowering their opponents out of the game, running away 15-6 victors.

Basketball Year 3/4 Blue 1 – Cranbrook 12 defeated Barker 8

The boys came out against Barker with fire in their eyes. The game was close throughout the first half with Barker only two baskets behind. But the boy’s collective defensive effort was impenetrable holding them back all game. Our defence opened all the right paths to allow for Sammy I to swoop in and score, leading the offensive effort, ensuring the boys left the Dangar Gym with a win over Barker.

Basketball Year 3/4 Blue 2 – Cranbrook 28 defeated Grammar St Ives 0

The game began with Cranbrook dominating both ends of the court, with Teddy A playing great defence, leading to multiple baskets by Harrison H. The boys continued to control the game with outstanding efforts shown from Ted W and Charlie W.

Cricket

Year 6A Cricket Cranbrook 56 defeated by Grammar St Ives 153

The 6As had a very early start to make it up to St Ives for their match against Grammar. The dew was heavy on the pitch and surrounding grounds but it soon turned into an absolute scorcher.

Captain Jasper L lost the bat flip and the home side opted to bat first.

Emile G and Charlie R took the new ball and bowled with good pace and energy but the Grammar openers were able to find the boundary early to be 20 runs from 4 overs. Momentum shifted slightly when Emile G took a superb diving catch off his own bowling to claim the first scalp.

Arthur D and Alistair T combined well as the first change pair to keep the run rate down and put pressure back on Grammar.

Alistair T made the next breakthrough with a ripper that turned & bounced to grab the outside edge and it was neatly taken behind the stumps by George A. Two quick wickets followed and had the parents yelling ‘TIMBER!’ as Alistair T and Emmanuel H both hit the stumps with some accurate bowling.

However, from this point, Grammar’s batsmen accelerated and seemed to continuously find the gaps to the boundary, despite great spells from Raffy S and Luca C who bowled straight and could count themselves unlucky not to have taken a wicket.

Jasper L brought himself on at the end of the innings and he managed to snare a late wicket with the help of some brilliant glove work to take a sharp chance behind the stumps from George A.

Emile came back to bowl the final over of the innings and bowled one of their set batsmen with a beauty.

Grammar’s innings finished 6/153 from their 20 overs.

Cranbrook openers Emmanuel H and Arthur D started watchfully against the new ball, attempting to score against an aggressive Grammar attack.

Arthur D tried to hit over the infield but mistimed his shot, falling in the second over for 1.

Emile G and came to the crease and looked to be starting to build a good partnership with Emmanuel with both batsmen running well, but both lost their wickets in consecutive overs to Grammar’s first change bowler (Emile – LBW (7) and Emmanuel – bowled (4)).

George A and Jasper L strode to the crease and Jasper hit a few excellent shots for four as well as running aggressive singles that challenged the Grammar fielders. George A was more watchful, soaking up 9 deliveries before launching a huge six over backward square leg.

A partnership was building, but just as they both started to look comfortable, the wickets tumbled again, with George A (13) falling to an amazing catch on the boundary and Jasper L (12) getting run out attempting a very tight single.

Charlie R and was out first ball to a quick one that struck him on the pads dead in front. Alistair T hit a nice two before he lost his stumps to one that snuck through his defence.

The final 2 batsmen – Raffy S and Luca C came to the crease with Cranbrook in trouble at 7/51 after 10 overs.

Both Raffy S and Luca C put up a brave and defiant resistance for 4 overs, but on the last ball of the 14th over, Raffy S (2) got a nasty delivery that reared up and caught his glove on the way through to the keeper.

Cranbrook was bowled out 98 runs shy of the target, but they fought hard in hot conditions and showed pockets of resistance against a very good Grammar bowling attack.

Year 6B Cricket Cranbrook 75 defeated by Grammar St Ives 78

It was the hottest day Sydney has seen since 2021 and the Cooper grounds in St Ives were ready to see some of the hottest competition for many years.

Captain Alexander M lost the coin toss and Cranbrook were sent into bat.

Cranbrook’s innings started slowly against a good Grammar pace attack but the openers Zachary S and Alexander M saw off the first 2 overs without loss.

However, Grammar’s first change bowler struck with his 4th delivery to catch the outside edge of Zachary S’s bat which was taken by the keeper. Zachary S departed for 2(11).

Steven H strode confidently to the crease and dispatched the offending bowler for 4 runs with his second ball faced. The pair worked some nice singles together before Alexander M was castled for 4(15) and Steven H skied a miss hit flick to be caught by the keeper for an entertaining 7(8).

Teddy C and Patrick G combined brilliantly with Patrick belting cover drives to the boundary regularly and Teddy rotating the strike beautifully to get Patrick back on strike to terrorise the Grammar bowlers.

Teddy has his stumps rearranged by a ripper for 3(12), and Jack H went two balls later for a duck to another good delivery.

Owen C came out to bat and looked like a man on a mission until he copped a cracker to be bowled for 0(4).

Things were looking a little wobbly at this point with Cranbrook 6/33 but cometh the hour, cometh the men.

Jackson P joined Patrick G at the crease and these two put on a stunningly defiant display. With their backs against the wall and just one wicket away from the end of Cranbrook’s innings, they battled their way to a 42-run partnership that was extremely entertaining to watch.

Patrick G smashed at total of 40 runs from 34 balls with six 4s, while Jackson ran extremely well and rotated the strike to compile a very well made 13 from 21 balls.

Cranbrook finished their 18 overs 5/75.

Coming out to bowl, Steven H and Alexander M opened up well with tight spells that really restricted the Grammar openers.

Teddy C and Owen C were also impressively economical, creating chances in the field when the Grammar batsmen started to get frustrated.

Jack H, who hasn’t bowled much before, performed well. His energy and enthusiasm were almost rewarded with more than a few run out opportunities, but the chances went begging and Grammar were starting to build dangerous partnerships.

Zach S, who had been keeping until the 10th over, came on and took two wickets with his first two balls to be on a hat-trick. The hat-trick ball was safely negotiated however, and Grammar resumed their chase.

Unfortunately for Cranbrook, the target wasn’t quite high enough to stop Grammar from cruising to victory with 4 overs to spare. The Cranbrook boys showed great teamwork and grit despite the hot conditions.

Year 5A Cricket – Cranbrook 140 defeated Waverley 121

Off the back of a dominant win last weekend, the challenge facing the 5As was consistency as they looked to take on cross-town rival Waverley. Having won the toss and deciding to bowl, the stump to stump bowling of Otto Y and spectacular fielding from Oscar ‘buckets for hands’ R kept Waverley to a very modest total. With the bat the lads never gave the opposition a sniff as they valued their wickets and showed determination through the brilliant running from Alistair M and the boundary bashing from Hughie W. Overall a dominant display of cricket from the sleeping giant of the program. Onto the next.

Year 5B Cricket – Cranbrook 71 defeated by Waverley 112

Cranbrook had a tough outing against Waverley, who came out swinging with the bat and put fast runs on the board. Charlie H bowled magnificently, hurling in his left armers to great effect, alongside Henry who threw them down with pace.

Unfortunately, we weren’t good enough with the bat to chase down a big total, losing wickets in fast succession which hurt our ability to make a total. Next week we will look to focus on building an innings and keeping our head down with willow in hand.

Year 4A Cricket – Cranbrook 83 defeated Newington 58

The 4As took to the field keen to rip in as we took on Newington at Dale Steyn Oval. Bowling first Joseph R and Leo S led the way with the ball and in the field backing up throws and bowling perfect line and length. Keeping Newington to 58-6 the boys chased down the total with some excellent hitting from Will W and Jimmy C finishing on 83-3.

Year 4Red Cricket –Cranbrook 127 defeated Grammar Edgecliff 65

Year 4Blue Cricket – Cranbrook 75 defeated by Grammar Edgecliff 91

The Year 4 Blues had a tough loss on the weekend against a strong Sydney Grammar side. Batting first we made a solid 75, with Oliver D the standout batsmen, hitting multiple sixes. However, we lost too many wickets and Grammar were only chasing 10 at the change of innings. To add to our problems, Christian K injured his knee batting, and we were down to four players which made fielding hard. Hugo C, Freddy F, Oliver D and Hadley S all bowled well and got a couple wickets each. However, the Grammar batsmen chipped away and ended up 8/91.

Year 3A Master Blasters – Cranbrook 127 defeated Barker 117

Year 3B Master Blasters – Cranbrook 108 defeated Barker 91

The 3Bs had a solid win against Barker in very hot conditions playing on astro turf. Batting first, a strong total of 108 was scored, with William S, Luca S and Nathan S and Samuel Y scoring well. The boys bowled well restricting Barker to 91 with Nathan S getting a caught and bowled. This weekend the 3Bs will be looking to put in another strong performance.

Year 3C Master Blasters – Cranbrook defeated Barker

The 3Cs had a tight win over Barker who are a strong cricket school. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Henry S and Harry M got the boys off to a strong start scoring a combined 41 runs. This was backed up by Imanol P and Otto H scoring 18 runs as a pair. The bowling and fielding was strong, not giving Barker too many bad balls to put away. They will be looking to back up this performance this weekend.

Multi-Sports

The Multi-sports squad are a delight to work with. Boys worked on their dribbling, shooting, throwing, and catching skills. There is noticeable improvement early on in many of the boys. Jack F and Kingston T were outstanding this week.

Sailing

The Cranbrook sailors have been relishing a return to Sydney summer conditions for the first part of term 1.

Our new year 4 intake turned up eager and ready to hit the harbour and have been progressing brilliantly in windy conditions. We look forward to seeing them move to more advanced techniques over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile our race squad has been refocusing after a great national championships in January. They have been targeting key skills before the state championships in late March.

One of the highlights of the past few weeks was the boys having the opportunity to watch the SailGP teams doing practice races on Friday 17th.

Tennis

Tennis As Cranbrook  14 defeated by Kings 54

Spirits were high and the sun was out for Saturday’s fixture against Kings. The boys were eager to play their best tennis! Special mention to Shai L., who won his singles match against a tough opponent. Also to Niko D. and Jayden B. who played exceptionally well as a team to win their match. We are looking forward to Round 3 next weekend.

Tennis Cs

A very hot and humid morning greeted the young aspiring players to the Trinity Tennis Centre. From the initial hitting warm up, it became clear some of the matches would be tough going as Trinity, fielding only 1 side in the division, had several top players. Order of the day was enjoyment – hard work and make them play one more ball.

To the Cranbrook boys credit, they did exactly that. Tremendous graft and energy throughout saw red faced smiles at the end of the challenging morning. Plenty of learnings of course but most importantly joy at having played. Huge effort all round.

Waterpolo

Water Polo Cranbrook 11 defeated St Aloysius

The first Year 5 and 6 Cranbrook water polo game was held last Saturday 18th February at home against St Aloysius. The team was extremely excited and ready to play. Joseph L quickly scored Cranbrook’s first goal with a strong shot. Another great pass from a team member helped him score his second goal within the first quarter. Throughout the four quarters, Cranbrook passed strongly and swam solidly. A team effort was shown with many members scoring goals. Sol G defended bravely in goals supported by his fellow team members. Cranbrook convincingly won 11-3 their first ever game for the Junior School. They are looking forward to a solid week of training focusing on building understanding of the game’s rules.
