Message from Michele Marquet, Acting Head of School

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we settle into the swing of Term 4 and look ahead to the last weeks of the school year, the calendar is brimming with opportunities for our students and events that signify the journey to the end of another school year.

For many this is an exciting time as we celebrate all that has been accomplished and the embedded learning which has taken place. For others, there may be some trepidation and anxiety about the transition to another year level as parents and students start thinking about what will happen at school in the year to come.

A successful transition into the next year level – whether it is into Kindergarten, Year 3, Year 7 or Year 11 – can be greatly assisted by parents and our School’s transition programmes. These established transition programmes, together with the School’s approach to learning through the IB Continuum framework, smooths these transitions and eases School stresses on our students. Through the IB learning framework which starts in our Pre-Schools and runs all the way through the Senior School years, we are working with the students to develop character so they can respond to challenges with optimism and an open-mind, confident in their own identities and able to tackle unpredictable and new situations.

The School’s transition programmes include campus and classroom visits and immersion days which allow the students to see what it is like, talk with current teachers of the next year level and ask questions they might have of students who are already living it, before ‘moving up’ themselves in 2025. These sessions are part of helping our students manage the challenges that change naturally brings.

Here are a few tips for families to support conversations around transition:

Junior School

  • Put feelings of concern into perspective, rather than trying to fix the situation, reinforcing there is nothing to worry about.
  • Be calm and talk positively about the move into a new year level.
  • Highlight positives about growing up and confirm your belief that your child will manage well.
  • Talk to your child about the things they will be able to do in the following year: Y1 boys can choose new after school activities; Y6 boys take on key leadership roles; Y3 boys start playing team sports and have even more after school activities from which to choose!
  • Remind your son that some of the boys from his current class will be in next year’s class – but having new boys in it will mean he can make even more friends.

Senior School:

  • For students transitioning to Year 7, parents will still be there to help but encourage them to take ownership.
  • Encourage your son to share his concerns and ask any questions directly to their House Mentor, Head of House or a teacher.
  • Help your son to be organised, to refer to his diary and check his emails regularly so this becomes a habit. If he tends to procrastinate, help him to breakdown larger tasks early, so he can do small amounts each day.
  • Listen to your son’s concerns and then brainstorm things he can do rather than you stepping in to do them for him.

Things do change every year at school, but coping with change is an essential life skill. Dr Judith Locke’s book The Bonsai Student has some excellent suggestions for families wanting to get the balance right in supporting their child to manage change and not hindering them from developing into an independent young person who will make valuable contributions to society.

If you are concerned about any aspect of their transition to the next grade, please talk with their class teacher and Head of House.

Best wishes

Message from Richard Baker, Acting Head of Junior School

Dear Junior and Pre-school families,

As we approach the end of the year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the importance of our School community and the role it plays in enhancing educational outcomes for our students. Research consistently shows that when parents, teachers and the broader school community work together, students are more likely to succeed academically, socially and emotionally. A strong community fosters a sense of belonging, support and shared purpose, which in turn helps our children to thrive.

Our CSPA are looking forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming CSPA Drinks on the Driveway on Friday, 1 November 2024, from 6:30 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come together to strengthen connections and continue building the vibrant community that makes Cranbrook such a special place.

Next week, we are looking forward to welcoming our Year 6 parents and teachers to the Year 6 Exhibition on Wednesday, 6 November 2024 at 6:00pm to participate in an evening of learning. This unique evening for our school community will allow the Year 6 students to discuss their process, as well as articulate what they have learned about their selected issue during the Exhibition process thus far. The students will use this time to gain new perspectives through conversations with members of our learning community. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Kind regards,

Richard Baker

Pre-schools’ News – Week 3

Pre-schools’ News – Week 3

Dear Families,

We have had an exciting week at Pre-school!

Both St Michael’s and St Mark’s enjoyed a visit from Mr Andrews and the children were thrilled to share some of their favourite Pre-school experiences and discuss the upcoming Kindy visits.

Some of our Pre-schoolers visited the Junior School for their Kindergarten transition mornings. It was wonderful to see the children exploring their new environment and beginning to familiarise themselves with what next year will bring. They had a fantastic time getting to know their future school.

Additionally, I am proud to share that our Pre-schoolers handled our lockdown and evacuation procedures with remarkable maturity and understanding. As we practise each term, it is great to see them grasping the importance of safety in such a thoughtful way.

We are also gearing up for our Toys ‘n Tucker collection to support our community. A letter with more details will be sent out and we look forward to collaborating with our families to make this initiative a success. The collection will start from next week, during Week 4.

Upcoming Events:

Week 4

  • Monday, 4 October, 10:00am: St Michael’s 3 & 5 Day Group African Drumming Incursion
  • Thursday, 7 October, 10:00am: St Mark’s African Drumming Incursion

Week 5

  • Monday, 11 October, 9:30am: St Michael’s 3 & 5 Day Group Puppet Show
  • Thursday, 14 October:

CSPA Executive Committee Update 2025

Dear Parents and Carers

As I have shared previously, the Cranbrook School Parents Association (CSPA) is a not-for-profit association of Cranbrook, consisting of volunteer parents and run by an elected committee of Year Representatives, General Committee Members and the Executive. The primary role of the CSPA is to support Cranbrook School, particularly the parent community, fostering goodwill and creating a community that is inclusive and welcoming to all.

We have several open roles for the 2025 CSPA Executive Committee that will be elected at the AGM at 7pm on Monday 18 November in the Nugent Boardroom, Vicars Centenary Building, Senior School:

  • CSPA President
  • CSPA Vice President Senior School
  • CSPA Vice President Junior School
  • CSPA Secretary

We are seeking nominations from parents across the whole school community. Ideally parents nominating for roles on the CSPA Executive have had experience as a Year Representative or other volunteering roles at Cranbrook. The nomination form is available to download on Cranbrook Connect here and should be emailed to the CSPA secretary by 11 November.

To find out more information about the CSPA including what we do and the Constitution, please go to Cranbrook Connect and visit Parents Association – Cranbrook Connect. If you would like more information about any of the roles, please get in touch via cranbrookspapresident@gmail.com

It has been such a joy and a pleasure to serve as President of the CSPA over the past two years, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents and particularly the CSPA Executive Committee for your kindness, care and hard work in support of the School. Although I am stepping down from the CSPA, I will continue to support the School in a different capacity as a member of the Cranbrook Foundation Board in 2025.

I hope to see many of you at the AGM on 18 November.

Many thanks

Sam Roberts
CSPA President

Junior School Prayer Morning

Junior School Prayer Morning

Tomorrow, (Friday, 1 November – All Saints Day) there will be a community prayer morning with Mr Noble for any parents, carers or staff in our JS community. It will be held from 7:45am in Music Room 2 on the Junior School campus. It is an opportunity to spend time in prayer for each other and the school. We run prayer meetings the first Friday of each month during term time.

World Teachers’ Day

In honour of World Teachers’ Day last Friday, our incredible Cranbrook Teachers enjoyed a special morning tea, generously hosted by the CSPA! Their commitment to our students, passion for teaching and the care they show in shaping young minds is truly inspiring.

School Student Travel

School Travel Passes

Applications are now open for 2025 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel.

Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass) for the first time will receive their School Opal card at their nominated postal address from mid-January 2025.

Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.

In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

Terms of Use

Students using School Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use.

This includes travel within the approved times between 6:30am and 7:00pm from Monday to Friday on school days only. Students must use their Child/Youth Opal card for any travel outside these times.

All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.

Year 1 Taronga Zoo Excursion

On Tuesday, our Year 1 students had a fabulous time visiting the zoo. They took part in a research-based excursion where they learned about animals and their habitats. Our curious students asked insightful questions as they developed their knowledge of living things.

Little Leagues Report – Round 8

It was another action-packed weekend of Cranbrook sport with our students competing across all sports with excellent focus and energy. Our senior relay team: Sebastian D, Jasper M, William S and Oscar R competed at the NSWPSSA State Athletic Championships last Thursday. They were placed second in their heat, advancing to the finals against the State’s fastest teams and ultimately finishing an impressive 7th overall. Additionally, William S competed in the 11 years 100m event and ran extremely well placing 24th. We congratulate these students on their dedication and effort leading up to this event, which contributed to these outstanding achievements.

I encourage all our students to train hard and stay focused as we move into round 9 of summer sport.

Yours in sport,

James Roughan
Head of Sport & PDHPE

Basketball

The weekend basketball games were a mix of strong victories and determined efforts across the teams. The Bs Basketball team claimed a solid 33-16 win over Shore, showcasing impressive teamwork and disciplined defence. Their smooth ball movement led to key scoring opportunities, with Henry C-S dominating the boards, and Spike T, Jacob B, and Leonardo B driving the offense with precision. The 5/6C team also had a decisive 48-14 win, bringing high intensity and energy throughout the game. Oliver S excelled offensively, while Gus T relentlessly pursued rebounds and loose balls, and Hugo C anchored the defence with key playmaking.

Meanwhile, the 3/4A team showed resilience against a tall Scots side, putting up a hard-fought game that ultimately slipped away, with Wolf T giving his all on both ends of the court. The 3/4C team secured a commanding 28-5 victory, with newcomers Sandy D and Aryan S adding a fresh boost to the lineup. Aidan P displayed his shooting range with a series of impressive deep shots, rounding out an outstanding team performance.

This round was marked by high energy, teamwork, and impressive individual efforts across all teams. The students displayed excellent sportsmanship and skill on the court. Each team demonstrated strong defence, effective ball movement, and a commitment to playing for each other, setting a solid foundation for continued success for rest of the season.

A vs Waverley

Win 9(49) -3(19)

The opening round for the As summer season kicked off in style with a convincing win (9-3) over Waverley. Shai L lit up the stage in both singles and doubles, showing his patience and consistency against a fast-paced opponent. Likewise, Niko D and Josh M dominated their matches conceding 3 games across doubles and singles combined with some drop shot expertise on show. With no direct opponents Jayden B and Ricky C (year 3) played matches against Waverley top and bottom pairings, where they proved, “if you are good enough, you are old enough” with a convincing 6-1 doubles win. In our final doubles match, Alexander T and Riley T were a dynamic force with great communication and baseline play despite coming up second best. The students were gracious in victory and should be proud of a great team performance overall.

B vs St Patrick’s

Win 6(36) – 6(32)

The Junior Bs had a nail-biting series of matches against St Patrick’s, with the final score being a 36-32 Cranbrook victory. George Y and Hugo C-B lead the team in doubles, dominating St Patrick’s for a 6-1 victory. George demonstrated deadly accuracy in his volleys, whilst Hugo provided powerful forehands from the back. Harvey and Ashton had an exhilarating double match too with Harvey’s incredible topspin backhands and Ashton’s reflex volleys putting on a wonderful display. In the singles, Nate S-W won a 4-1 victory with his powerful topspin groundstrokes and strong consistency. As did James B who won with his dynamic baseline points and dominant forehands. Despite tough opposition, Hugo B and Rory M played intense singles games, matching their opponents for pace and providing excellent returns to powerful serves. Hugo, in particular, relied on his quick footwork to cover the length of the court in many hard-won points.

Overall, it was a very impressive display for both teams putting their practice into play.

Head of Tennis

Cricket

A beautiful morning for cricket where we hosted several matches at Dangar. The Year 3 team won their matches with a close victory in the mighty C team by 3 runs.

For the second week running we were able to host a fixture on grass which the Year 5A enjoyed a comfortable victory. All master blaster teams won their matches apart from the 4 Blue who had a narrow defeat in an entertaining game.

It was brilliant to see the Junior School Cavaliers represent in the senior school cricket program where they took on the Barker Year 9B.

Sailing

Last weekend, we had 8 students travel to Canberra for the ACT Sailing State Championship. The wind was nowhere to be seen on Day 1 and unfortunately racing was cancelled. However, this didn’t stop the Cranbrook boys from hitting the water that afternoon to make use of the very light winds that later filtered down Lake Burley Griffin. As the forecast promised, we saw more wind on Day 2. Balthazar R begun the day scoring a first in race 1 in open fleet. Anastasi F, Tom W, Xavier O-M and Ben P navigated the tricky waters of Canberra racing in intermediate fleet. Almost as though competing in a stadium, parents were able to watch & cheer closely from the shoreline. Lachlan B, Carlitos C & Imanol P raced hard in green fleet, getting the greatest number of races for the day out of any fleet. The ACT states are always a unique experience for sailing and the weekend was a massive success in strengthening the teams experience and friendship.

Multi-Sport

In Round 8, the students played Noodle Basketball, focusing on strategy and teamwork to achieve successful outcomes. They practised evasion techniques and finding open spaces, which improved both their coordination and basketball shooting skills. The session showcased their progress in both strategy and spatial awareness.
