Message from Michele Marquet, Acting Head of School

Dear Parents and Carers,

Today, when online communication brings relational challenges we never knew as children, the speed of change is faster than at any time in history and the world and its problems are closer to us than ever before, the relationship between the School and our parents becomes even more important for our children. Opportunities to help us understand one another better, forge stronger links and provide practical information to make school life easier to manage are well worth embracing.

Although there are many elements that must be present for an excellent education to result, there is no doubt that if the best education for your son is to be achieved, then the parent-school relationship must be trusting, respectful and solid. You entrust your children to us and we take that responsibility exceptionally seriously. Parents and the School bring different perspectives to this relationship. As parents, you have intimate and ongoing knowledge of your child that we as educators can benefit from as we cater for his learning. That is why we ask you to speak directly to the teachers about your child through parent-teacher interviews and Meet the Mentor Day.

The way a parent communicates about their child as they are growing and changing is invaluable information for us. On the other hand, apart from subject expertise, school staff bring profound understanding of child development across large numbers of children and how children learn best in the school context. School is all about learning how to learn successfully in a group, collaborating, persisting and overcoming challenges. Skills which will prove to be essential as they leave school and enter the wider world where workplaces increasingly require us to be able to work in teams to solve problems.

When the individual knowledge about one child is interwoven with the broader knowledge of children at a certain stage of development and how children learn best in school, an extraordinary education can result. For that to happen, it is absolutely essential that we see each other as being on the same team, working in the best interests of the student. Working together, we can be a formidable team. That, of course, does not mean we will always agree about every single matter. However, the fact we are both striving to do the best for a child should enable all our interactions to be respectful and considerate, even if we may have different perspectives to share.

To facilitate this type of exchange, we often ask you to approach particular staff over different issues, so your concern can be addressed as quickly as possible by the people in the best position to assist you. It is also why we ask that email is used only to set up meetings or for very functional purposes. Teachers generally do not have time to read email during the course of a day and most concerns are better resolved face to face or on the phone. Our relationship is too important.

It feels like the year has started in earnest this week with many activities and onsite events being held. Over the last week or so, Parent Information Sessions have been held for different year levels and sections of the school. These have been opportunities to hear what is unique about that year level, garner important information to help the year run smoothly for your child and start to build relationships with the educators who will care for and teach them. Tonight, there is a welcome event for our Year 7 parents and new K-12 parents on the Mackay Lawn in front of the Chapel, another opportunity to forge valuable relationships within the Cranbrook community.

To foster those strong and trusting partnerships between parents, students and our School, we encourage you to attend when you can, the CSPA social events for your child’s year level; Senior School House Events for families; Saturday sport fixtures; or the CSPA/CETOP Family Fun Day at Dangar (16 March).

We look forward to a happy and productive Week 3!

Kind wishes

Message from Grant Andrews, Acting Head of Junior School

Dear Junior and Pre-school families,

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” Winston Churchill

It has been another exciting week at the Junior School, with co-curricular, instrumentalist lessons and sports training all kicking into action. I would like to personally acknowledge and thank all parents for the incredible organisation that goes on behind the scenes at home to support everything that happens on our School calendar. We are now in full swing with our programs across all cohorts and there is already much to celebrate.

Year 5 State Parliament Excursion
Our Year 5 students had a fantastic, albeit rainy day at the State Parliament this week, where they learned about the workings of government and democracy. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to see firsthand how decisions are made at the state level and also to engage with the civic processes that shape our community. A huge thank you to all the teachers who helped make this excursion such a success.

Year 6 Leaders Induction Assembly
We are so proud to have inducted our Year 6 Leaders this week during a special assembly. It was heartening to see our new student leaders stepping up and taking on responsibilities within the School community, and we look forward to the positive impact they will make throughout the year.

K-2 & New Parent Talk with Judith Locke
A warm thank you to Judith Locke for her insightful talk with our Kindertgarten and new parents today. The session was both informative and engaging, offering practical and valuable advice for parents on navigating the school journey. We hope everyone who attended found it as helpful as we did!

IPSHA Sport – First Round
Best of luck to all our teams participating in the first round of IPSHA sport this weekend. We are looking forward to seeing our students compete with enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

Cross Country – Friday, 21 February
A reminder that our much-anticipated Years 3-6 Cross Country event will be held next Friday, 21 February, on Dangar Oval. We anticipate a great day of friendly competition and team spirit. Please ensure students are prepared with the appropriate sports gear and have a water bottle, hat and sunscreen on the day. All parents of students in Years 3-6 are welcome to attend. Our House Leaders are buzzing with excitement as they prepare for their first major event of the year! They’ve been busy organising war cries, decorations, and more, ensuring it will be a fun and competitive event for all involved. We can’t wait to see all the enthusiasm and teamwork come to life.

Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead and looking forward to seeing you all at upcoming events.

Warm regards,

Grant Andrews

Pre-Schools’ News – Week 3

Pre-Schools’ News – Week 3

Dear Families,

This week at our Pre-schools, it has been wonderful to see the children arriving with such confidence, knowing their routines, which has enabled them to engage fully in class activities.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we held our Parent Information Evenings, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who attended. It was a pleasure to connect with you and provide further insight into the Pre-school experience. If you were unable to attend but would like more information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s class teacher.

Please note that your class teacher will be sending emails, so we kindly ask that you keep an eye on your inbox for updates. In the coming week, you will receive an Operoo notification regarding an upcoming incursion, Healthy Harold. This notification will contain all the relevant details, and it will also allow you to give your consent for your child to participate.

Kind regards,

Abigail McFarlane
Pre-Schools’ Coordinator

Expressions of Interest for Potential New Co-Curricular Clubs

Expressions of Interest for Potential New Co-Curricular Clubs

Starting in Term 2, Cranbrook is looking at offering two new Co-curricular clubs.

VEX Robotics Club (Year 4): This is a fantastic opportunity to dive into the world of robotics, where you’ll design, build, and program robots using the VEX IQ system. VEX Robotics is an engaging worldwide platform that helps students develop valuable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity. Not only will you learn about robotics, but you may also have the chance to compete and collaborate with other schools in future robotics competitions!

3D Printing and Modelling Club (Years 3-6): Students will follow step-by-step tutorials to learn how to digitally model objects in 3D and explore the fascinating world of 3D printing and prototyping. There will also be opportunity to bring designs to life on our 3D printer! This club is perfect for students who are passionate about design and technology and want to explore how 3D printing and modelling are used in fields like engineering, gaming, and product development.

Both clubs would run once a week (days and times to be confirmed) with limited spaces. Please click on these links to express your interest: VEX Robotics Club (Year 4) 3D Printing and Modelling Club (Years 3-6)

This will help us gauge whether these clubs can be added to our already healthy co-curricular offering.

Y3 Incursion

Y3 Incursion

At the start of Year 3, students explore how communities function and what contributes to their success. Mrs Marquet spoke to the grade about the importance, purpose and necessity that schools play in communities.

She shared the history of the Junior School, discussed the need for changes to some buildings due the moving of Year 3-6 to the Kent Road site and explained the roles of various faculties within our school.

JS Music News – Week 3

I am delighted with how our Junior School boys have sprung back into action, musically. Co-Curricular music rehearsals are now in full swing and there has been a hive of activity in our music studios with instrumental lessons.

How do I enrol my son for private instrumental lessons?
To enrol, please go to the Operoo App and complete the “Learning an Instrument” form found in the “Form Library.” Further questions can be directed to our Music Administrator, Sandra Trew, who rosters and coordinates these lessons: strew@cranbrook.nsw.edu.au

Auditions for Chamber Choir and Cranbrook Voices
Congratulations to the boys who have been offered a place in the Chamber Choir (Y3-6) and Cranbrook Voices (Y5-6). It was an extremely competitive process with most students keen to be offered a place. How wonderful to see we had a 100% ‘take-up’ for both Chamber Choir and Voices. I understand there are some disappointed students who were not offered a place at this stage, so I encourage you to please continue to work with your sons in managing their disappointment. All boys at Cranbrook are involved in a rich choral programme through their Year Level Choir and we keep a keen eye on students who could qualify for one of the auditioned choirs at a later stage.

K-6 Music Morning Concerts
This year, in place of Lunchtime Concerts, we will hold Music Morning Concerts on certain Fridays from 8:00am to 8:30am in Music Room 1. These concerts are open to boys in K to 6 who have a piece at performance standard, regardless of level, to perform. It’s always wonderful to hear their great work and witness our students’ progress in an encouraging environment. Instrumental teachers sign up their students, as appropriate, and you will receive an email from me with an invitation to attend should you like to hear your son perform. Please click here for more information.

Junior School Music Soireé
On Thursday 21st March there will be a Junior School Music Soireé held in Music Room 1 from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. This event is for more accomplished instrumentalists and vocalists in Years 3-6 who are well prepared and can perform with polish and regard to the musical style. Your son’s instrumental teacher (or Mr Fox) will send home a Soireé form should they feel this event is suitable for your son. Please note: this event is also open to students who have private instrumental lessons outside of the School.  Please click here for more information.

JS Music events – Term 1
Please see the updated list of JS music events for Term 1 here. More information will be provided regarding these specific events as the term progresses.

What a fantastic start to 2025!

Warmest wishes,

Peter Fox
