CSPA – World Teachers’ Day

Next Friday 28 October is World Teachers’ Day. We are so lucky to have world class teachers here at Cranbrook and this is a wonderful opportunity for boys to express their sincere gratitude. This year, we are encouraging parents to facilitate boys making a drawing, card or letter, at home, to give to their teachers next Friday. Thoughtful momentos such as these are treasured by teachers.

Message from Michele Marquet

Message from Michele Marquet

Dear Parents,

It has been wonderful to see so many Junior School families at the Senior School campus over the past week. Many enjoyed the fun-filled and polished performances in the new Packer Theatre of the musical, ‘School of Rock’. With perfect weather all day last Saturday, so many of our community were also able to revel in their first real foray into the Vicars Centenary Building and other new facilities at the Senior School. The new building, the Chapel and surrounds, as well as the Aquatics and Fitness Centre, are truly magnificent and our JS students can look forward with eager anticipation to utilising all these spaces in due course – even before they get to Senior School.

Superbly prepared by Peter Fox and Jane Holmes à Court, our Junior School Chamber Choir excelled in their performance of ‘Dare to Dream’ at the official opening of the new facilities with the NSW Governor in attendance. Thank you to our families who supported the delicious high tea on offer throughout the afternoon by providing some yummy food and serving the 3000+ guests throughout the afternoon!

JS Reception
Junior School Reception is now fully functioning again. Parents are welcome to come into Reception through the main entrance and to speak with Mrs Jill McPherson, our Office Manager about any matters she can assist them with at school. Students will also now need to go into Reception to be signed in, if they arrive at school after the start of the school day, or to be signed out, if they need to leave the campus early for any reason.

Staff News
We wish Mark De Brún the very best as he commences an extended period of paternity leave tomorrow. We look forward to welcoming him back to Cranbrook at the start of next year.

Junior School Psychologist
We are well into the process for appointing a new JS Psychologist. However, it looks likely that the new appointee will not be able to start until 2023.

For families requiring higher levels of psychological support, parents may wish to seek an external clinical psychologist until the start of 2023.

Otherwise, please contact Grant Andrews or Heather Brodie, if you are seeking support with socio-emotional and learning issues.

As soon as the appointment is finalised, we will let our families know.

World Teachers’ Day: Doff Your Cap
This day is celebrated next Friday, 28 October. We would love all our students to wear a cap, so they can doff their caps to thank their teachers for all they do.

Pre-school’s Update

The children have been unpacking the idea of being creative and exploring different ways this can be expressed, as we continue our inquiry ‘We express and appreciate creativity in unique ways.’

To help support this understanding, Sophie Boniface, Junior School Drama Teacher has been working with our Pre-schoolers this week and will continue to do so throughout the term. Little Wings Puppet Show will be at both Pre-school campuses during the week beginning Monday, 7 November to perform for the children. We are excited for these opportunities to be taking place at Pre-school!

Please check out the Day Book at the end of each day or via the digital copy placed on Cranbrook Connect at the end of each week to find out more about the learning experiences that have taken place this week.  St Mark’sSt Michael’s 5 Day GroupSt Michael’s 3 Day GroupSt Michael’s 2 Day Group.

Christmas Concerts

We are pleased to welcome back families for our Christmas Concerts this year! Peter Fox and the Pre-school staff have already begun preparations. Our concerts will be held on the following dates:

Friday, 2 December – 2 Day Group at 9.30am & 5 Day Group at 12pm (St Michael’s)

Monday, 5 December – 3 Day Group at 9.30am (St Michael’s) & St Mark’s 5 day Group at 12pm

Further details will be provided nearer the time.

Wet Weather

In light of the indifferent weather we are experiencing at present, we suggest that children bring a rain coat and gumboots to Pre-school on days where rain is forecast. If we have appropriate clothing and the rain eases, this will still allow us to venture outside and enjoy our outdoor learning environments.

Do you have some Lego to donate?

As a part of our community service, and at William Parshall’s suggestion, we are looking to collect Lego donations for the Nawarddeken Academy that supports three bi-cultural schools in West Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. When William visited Arnhem Land in 2021, he saw how much the children loved playing with Lego and he thought it would be a great idea to reach out to the Cranbrook community to share their pre-loved Lego with the Nawarddekken Academy.

We are asking for all Lego donations to be sent to the 6S classroom by the end of Week 3, 28 October 2022. Lego in plastic tubs/containers is much appreciated.

If you would like to find out more about the Nawarddekken Academy, please click on the links below:

  • The ‘Who we are’ page on their website also gives a wonderful overview of the Nawardekken Academy.
  • You can also see all the great things they’re doing through their facebook and instagram accounts.
  • There is also a link here  if anyone would like to donate to Karrkad Kanjdji Trust (KKT) which was established by Traditional Owners of Warddeken and Djelk Indigenous Protected Areas in 2010. Today they support Indigenous rangers to manage Country across more than 50,000 square kilometres of ancient landscapes. The Nawarddeken Academy prefer donations to be made through KKT, as they support KKT to manage this integral part of our work.

Nude Food Day at Cranbrook: Thursday, 27 October 2022

What is nude food lunch?

Nude Food is food without excess packaging. It is food that comes to school without disposable packaging, such as extra plastic bags, paper bags, wrappings or cling wraps.

Last term, the Community Service Representatives raised awareness of soft plastics by delivering an informed presentation to all the K-2 students. Following this, they supported our youngest students in our school to recycle their soft plastics during recess and lunch.

Next, we would like the whole school to take part in a ‘Nude Food Day’ on Thursday, 27 October which encourages all students to bring to school only packaged snacks and lunches in durable, reusable containers.

As a school, we will continue to strive to reduce and then eventually eliminate soft plastics.

Changes to COVID-19 Isolation Period

From last Friday, 14 October 2022, it is no longer be mandatory to self-isolate at home, if your child tests positive to COVID-19. However, NSW Health strongly recommends people who are sick or have tested positive to COVID-19 stay home until their symptoms have gone. Please consider the impact on our community, if unwell children are at school.

Our Health Centre’s focus will still be on ensuring unwell students are sent home and stay home until well.  Thank you for your ongoing understanding and sensible caution.

Our Big Kitchen

Shanna and Kirsty, CSPA Year 6 representatives, arranged a very special charity opportunity for the Year 6 boys and their families at Our Big Kitchen. Families worked together to make over 100 meals that were delivered to homeless people and shelters around Sydney. They also baked cookies for doctors, nurses and other frontline workers giving thanks for how hard they work to keep us all healthy and safe.

The feedback was that it was an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable experience. Boys gained an understanding of the huge demand for food by those who find themselves in difficult circumstances and that their humble contributions can make a huge difference in the lives of many.

Creating Learning Resources for Swiss Students

In the last two weeks, several Year 3 students fostered global mindedness by creating learning resources for children learning English in Switzerland. Through a connection between Rosie Heckes, our Year 3 Educational Development Teacher, and a curriculum development teacher in Switzerland, the students were asked to create a video introducing themselves, discussing the number of items and the colours of things in their school bags.

The students filmed a short video, and a longer one, where they also included a special item on or inside their bag. These videos will be sent to Switzerland to be used in the coming years as good models of spoken English and of how students introduce themselves.

We are very proud to have represented our School in a way which will also impact other students across the world.

Little League Summer Sport Reports Round 7

Basketball Round 7

Basketball Year 5/6 As – Cranbrook 48 defeated Grammar Edgecliff 39

The As had a strong start to the second half of the season, with a convincing win against Grammar Edgecliff. The boys played with great cohesion and capitalised on their opportunities. Tyson B and Marco F showed off their shooting ability, with Charlie R controlling the tempo of the game well. The hard work that the team put I during the off season was evident on the weekend.

Basketball Year 5/6 Bs – Cranbrook 17 defeated by Grammar Edgecliff 25

The Bs lost in a close encounter to Grammar Edgecliff on Saturday morning. Grammar came out strong and controlled the game on both ends of the court. The Bs fought hard to get back into the game, however fell short at the end. Oscar R had a strong first game in the Bs, with Van G and Huw S scoring well.

Basketball Year 5/6 Cs – Cranbrook 38 defeated Grammar Edgecliff 21

For the 5Cs the ball got rolling after a slow start, but the boys came out with their first win of the season. Once our defensive powerhouses, Sam F., Sebastian K., and Vincen.t B found their mojo the other team couldn’t handle our team. From their stopping force, the point was being racked in under Louis’ L handle and Edwards’s F speed on the fast break. Eddie’s F continuous hustle up and down the court kept us consistent throughout the whole game. Lachlan’s R-W shooting and tall presence made it hard for the opponents to catch the boys speeding towards a win.

Basketball Year 5/6 Ds – Cranbrook 54 defeated Grammar Edgecliff 0

Last Saturday’s game for the Ds team was an absolute blast, both to watch and on the scoreboard! The boys all played amazingly well finishing the game with a 54-0 win. Heath C was everywhere stopping the opponents from passing the ball, stealing it, and executing some beautiful passes to Jake C. who showed off his un-guardable handle with the ball. Aiden M., Charlie R., and James D. displayed off-the-chart skills on both the offensive and defensive ends. We cannot forget about Rahul, the man who made sure that the other team scored no points by blocking every shot that crossed his path.

Basketball Year 5/6 Es – Cranbrook defeated Grammar Edgecliff

The teamwork and discipline of the Es helped score them an emphatic win against Grammar this Saturday at Dangar. Harry R had a big scoring game, but everyone in the team played a role in this win. The ball was moving, with the boys putting the team first in their decision making. Overall, an impressive win that bodes well for the quality of basketball this team will achieve this season if they continue to play with this attitude.

Basketball Year 5/6 Fs – Cranbrook 36 defeated Grammar Edgecliff 32

The Year 5/6 Fs had a clutch win to jumpstart the season against Sydney Grammar at Home.  Although Cranbrook took a lead to the halftime break, Grammar rallied to tie the game down the stretch. Will P anchored the defence in this period to prevent Grammar’s centre from getting easy baskets. Cranbrook’s composure proved to be the difference allowing them to secure their first win of the season.

Basketball Year 5/6 Gs – Cranbrook 36 defeated Grammar Edgecliff 20

Great win to start the season. The boys were on fire, with a 14-point game from Michael I and Costa V picking up 3 blocks. All round great team performance. Every boy demonstrated great enthusiasm and connection with other members of the team. I look forward to seeing this collaboration carry throughout the season

Basketball Year 5/6 Hs – Cranbrook 16 defeated by Grammar Edgecliff 21

Close loss to start the season. Up at halftime 12-9 but switched off early in the second half. Boys dug deep with same great defence from Max C and Leo M. Overall the boys showed good teamwork and enthusiasm for the first game of the season. They should hold their heads high going into next week’s games.

Basketball Year 3/4 As – Cranbrook 21 defeated by Knox 33

Opening up the first game of the day at Knox preparatory school, the Year 3/4 As got off to a slow start. However, they showed tremendous heart and resilience with a major improvement in the 2nd half.  Led by Oliver H and Kiran J, the As showed greater emphasis on communication and hustle which impacted the team positively on both defence and offence. The boys look to learn from Week 1 of this new season and will work on improving decision making at training this week.

Basketball Year 3/4 Bs – Cranbrook 16 defeated Knox 5

The Year 3/4 Bs set the tone with standard of play on Saturday against Knox with some extremely memorable moments.  Santiago D and Rhidian S played with a great team focus as they made some tremendous passes setting up key baskets.  Each player on the Bs was unselfish and willing to put in the effort, particularly in the latter half of the game. The boys should be proud of their performance heading into Week 2 of basketball.

Basketball Year 3/4 Cs – Cranbrook 9 defeated by Knox 27

Despite the defeat, the Year 3/4 Cs showed glimpses of great skill on Saturday against Knox.  From great examples of team communication to showcases of effective dribbling, the boys will look to use these moments from Saturday’s game to improve.  Danesh M and Aurelius S put in the hard yards motivating teammates to work together on both ends of the floor.  The Cs will look to improve spacing and moving to the ball on inbound passes at training this week.

Basketball Year 3/4 Ds – Cranbrook 9 defeated Knox 3

With great emphasis on starting the game well, the Ds set the tone as they were engaged and active early.  Their man-to-man defence was strong, which can be accredited to their extra effort calling out numbers to ensure no one from Knox was open.  The low score line does not reflect the great performance the Ds had as they willed their way to victory through their hard work and increased awareness on the ball.  Luca M and Rhys A stayed very composed and were crucial in the team’s performance.

Basketball Year 3/4 White 1 – Cranbrook 24 defeated Knox 2

Following the performance of the White 2s, the White 1s backed up their mates’ performance with an incredible 24-2 win over Knox. The boys started the game with confidence in their defensive ability, whilst proving exceptional scoring prowess and teamwork on the offensive end. Sammy I was by far the man of the match displaying leadership and excellence within his game, finishing the game with 9 points. Another stand out of the day was Ziggy S who displayed the qualities of a great all-round player, being a strong defensive threat, whilst having a great offensive performance of 4 points.

Basketball Year 3/4 White 2 – Cranbrook 10 defeated Knox 6

The White 2s had an amazing first game of the season on Saturday the 15th of October winning 10-6 against Knox Grammar. The boys initially struggled on the offensive end with Knox having most of the possession in the first half. However, in the second half the boys came out firing scoring 7 points in the second half, led by Kaiden and Oscar M, the offensive powerhouses and stand out performers of the day, whilst holding the strong Knox side to very few. Leading to a great first win of what I’m sure is going to be a great season.

Basketball Year 3/4 Blue 1 – Cranbrook 18 defeated Knox 5

Following the Blue 2 teams’ dominant defensive performance, Blue 1 came out with a similar level of intensity that saw a steady dose of both offence and defence. Playing physical defence and capitalising with layups on the other end is a testament to the boys’ effort in training in past weeks. Solid defence was again the story of this game, with standout performances from Sung and George throughout the whole game. Also, Charlie W and Henry W were instrumental to the success on the offensive end, getting easy transition layups and benefiting from Marcus K’s tremendous rebounding.

Basketball Year 3/4 Blue 2 – Cranbrook 5 defeated Knox 4

For the first game of the season, all the boys for the Blue 2 team came ready to show what they’re made of. The game was a struggle on the offensive end for our team, although the shots that were taken were of a high percentage and looked good. However, the silver lining was the boys’ impeccable defence. Throughout the entire game and especially the second half, the opposing Knox Grammar struggled to get past the defence, leading to an approximate total possession percentage of about 80%. Special mention must go the Oliver S, Oliver W and William S for outstanding performances on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. All the boys must be commended for their efforts on the weekend.

Cricket Round 7

Year 6A Cricket – Cranbrook 142 defeated Newington 101

The 6As arrived at Dangar keen to get their season started with a win. We took on Newington, in what was to be a fantastic game. Batting first, Jonny Y and Dylan D where the stand outs getting the Cranbrook side to a solid total of 142 off our 20 overs. The boys then put in a great team performance in the field creating pressure on the batsman at every opportunity and restricting Newington to just 101 to take the game by 41 runs.

Year 6B Cricket – Cranbrook defeated St Andrews

The 6Bs would have every excuse to start the season shakily with some wet weather interrupting preparations. However instead the boys came out with a blistering display of damaging bowling and blistering batting enough to bring the crowds back to Dangar 2. Having elected to bowl first the boys ripped through the St Andrew’s line-up with excellent displays from ‘Tall Tower’ Fred and Andrew who had the ball on a string. With the bat, the game was sealed signed and delivered once Charlie ‘buckets for hands’ W and skip for the day Tommy Turbo punished the St Andrew’s bowling attack to all corners of the ground. They both were retired after all but finishing the match. A dominant display and we can’t wait to see where this side can go.

Year 5A Cricket – Cranbrook defeated Shore by 18 runs

The Year 5As put out their best performance as a group this year. Losing the toss and bowling first suited us well. Shores facilities provided us the opportunity to play on turf which added to the occasion. Some brilliant bowling and fielding throughout kept shore to 67 runs and losing 8 wickets. Wickets were gained throughout the team with some highlights and Ishy S getting a wicket maiden. Our batting performance was solid. The boys knew that retaining their wicket was vital to winning this game. It was an impressive innings with Emile H getting 29 not out and 6/8 boys with not out scores. Overall, it was a brilliant win by 18 runs.

Year 5B Cricket – Cranbrook defeated Shore

The 5Bs won the toss and elected to bat on a sunny Saturday morning out at Northbridge Oval. A solid score of 60 was made on a field with large boundaries and good aggressive running between the wickets helped build the total. The top run scorer was Jasper L with 8 off 12 balls. We bowled well full and straight on the stumps, as a result Patrick G, Zac S, Raffy S (2), Jasper L, Alex M (2) and Harry R all took wickets when they were bowling. The fielding was sharp cutting off singles and boundaries when required. Special mention must go to Zac S for his direct hit run out. It was a strong start to the season.

Year 5C Cricket – Cranbrook defeated by Scots

The 5Cs started their 2022/23 season off with a fixture against Scots at Lough Park on Saturday. Our captain for the day, Carter, won the toss and elected to bat. Cranbrook put in an overall strong performance with the bat, losing 4 wickets for 81 runs. Special mention goes to Oliver K, who too scored with 15. However, Cranbrook’s efforts with the bat were to no avail, with Scot’s reaching the total relatively easily, and winning the match by 34 runs.

Year 4A Cricket – Cranbrook 85 defeated Grammar St Ives 69

Cranbrook lost the toss and batted on a cold and wet day up at Grammar St Ives. Grammar offered plenty with the ball, which restricted Cranbrook’s scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, we left a few runs out there, failing to convert 1s into 2s. Cranbrook batted tight and only lost 3 wickets, with one of the many highlights being a solid rear guard action from Xavier M. The boys managed a solid 85, and knew they had to bowl well.

Great bowling spells from Jack R and Oliver F saw plenty of wickets fall, including a couple of excellent dismissals crashing into the stumps. While Grammar scored effectively and efficiently, they were hampered by the loss of 10 wickets, which dragged their score down to 69. A great result for the boys to start the season, and plenty to work on with running between the wickets.

Year 4Blue Cricket – Cranbrook 4Blue 88 defeated Newington Lindfield 71

Cranbrook 4Blue arrived at Koola Park ready to go, the warm-up had a great amount of energy which was the key to our success through this game. We won the toss and the boys elected to Bowl, the boys were able to keep the pressure bowling extremely well, keeping Newington to 55 runs (not including extra runs for wickets). The boys took 2 wickets during the innings and were excellent in the field. After the first 12 overs of the innings the boys were ready to bat, with a quick change over Angus D and Otto Y were able to get us off to a flier posting 21 runs in their 3 overs, some great hitting from Otto Y and Angus D as the boys punished the bad balls, Our next pair was Tomek O and Joseph L the boys once again punished the bad balls and were able to keep the run chase ticking along, Austin M and Joseph L were able to really get the run chase going which was a key moment in the game and ultimately decided the outcome with some great power hitting putting the ball across the rope, Our last pair Felix C and Rembrandt T sealed the game for us and the ability to run between the wickets and put the bad balls away giving us a total of 78 runs (not including extra runs for wickets). Overall, it was a great performance from the boys in their first game of Term 4.

Year 4Red Cricket – Cranbrook 4Red 97 defeated Newington Lindfield 86

An early start for the boys in their first game back for the Term. We won the toss and the boys elected to bat; the boys displayed a great ability of batting with only losing 3 wickets in the whole 12 over innings. Rembrandt T and Felix C opened the batting for us, looking to score runs quickly having some great running between the wickets, Henry C-S and Tomek O was our next pair in really taking their chances to put the bad balls away for 4 runs, George Y and George F really turned up the heat taking quick singles applying the pressure back onto Newington, our final pair was Henry C-S and Jack E once again the boys took their options to punish the bad balls and really boost our total to 72 runs (not including extra runs for wickets). With a great total to defend the boys were keen to get out in the field and take some wickets. Some great bowling from the boys taking 5 wickets during the innings and really keeping it tight and keeping the pressure on Newington, the real game changer for us was Tomek O taking 2 wickets in 1 over this was a key moment for the boys. Overall, it was a great performance from the boys in their first game of Term 4.

Year 3A Master Blasters – Cranbrook defeated Scots

The mighty Cranbrook 3As put on a great display of teamwork as they went up against their arch-rivals Scots. Cranbrook bowled first, with special mentions going to Will W with 5 wickets and contributions from Sebastian R with 2 wickets, and James C and Julian D with a wicket each to get Scots to 96 runs. The batting innings was great with Thomas F scoring 20, Sebastian R 27 and James C with 28 to bring us to a total of 136 runs

Year 3B Master Blasters – Cranbrook defeated Scots

The Cranbrook 3Bs started their season perfectly with a comprehensive win over Scots. The boys bowled a tight line and targeted the stumps, taking six wickets and bowing a number of maiden overs. In response the 3Bs put in a strong batting effort, amassing runs with ease and ultimately winning by 89 runs.

Year 3C Master Blasters – Cranbrook defeated Scots

The mighty Cranbrook 3Cs got their season off to a flyer with an impressive win over Scots. The boys were terrific in everything they touched and really showed their talent. It was great to see all their hard work from training come to fruition in the game. All roads lead to next week with the boys taking on Newington where we will be hoping to continue our good form and gather some momentum for the weeks ahead.

Tennis Round 7

Tennis As – Cranbrook defeated by Grammar St Ives

The sun was shining for the first Saturday of our continued Summer Sport Seasons. The students were enthusiastic and ready for action. We faced a tough opposition with a loss of 1-11 however there were many personal highlights to note. Alexander T. and Frederick C. had fantastic communication and sportsmanship during their doubles fixture. Willem M. and Riley T. had some superb rallies in their singles. They eagerly await their next fixture against Knox.

Tennis Cs – Cranbrook defeated The Kings School

The C team was bursting with eagerness and energy for the return to Summer Tennis. They showed skill and consistency to win all of their matches against Kings. In the doubles, Ethan G and Ian T had clear communication on the court to ensure their win. Oliver O was calm and focused throughout his match, carefully aiming his shots.

Multi-Sports

Throughout the week and on the first Saturday of Summer Multi-Sport, the boys continued to develop their striking skills. Lucas Z and Amiel B displayed excellent skill when striking tennis balls of a tee. At the end of the session, we played a game of ‘Dodge Tee ball’ with the Red team winning by only a 1pt difference. All the boys are to be thanked for great sportsmanship and togetherness throughout the session.

Sailing

We have had a great start to sailing this week with the help of some fantastic weather conditions this weekend! On Saturday, the boys practiced short course racing and completed mini regattas in preparation for the ‘Chook Cup’. Throughout our sessions this week, the boys have been focusing on developing their sail trim skills and figuring out the true wind direction. It was great to see the boys putting in such a great effort and persisting with new challenges. We are looking forward to a great term of sailing and developing our skills even more.
