Message from Michele Marquet, Acting Head of School

Dear Cranbrook families,

Despite the wet weather we have experienced over the last few weeks, the students from P-Y12 have been wholeheartedly engaging in their learning and co-curricular activities. As I have walked around our School in the last week or so, whether at St Mark’s Pre-school today, the Junior School or on the Senior School campus, it has been a delight to see the students focusing on their learning both in classroom, or outside in various co-curricular activites, so positively. What a delight it was to celebrate at all campuses this year the significant role mothers play in the lives of their children. We wish all mothers a very happy Mother’s Day this Sunday.

Over the last year, we have been undertaking a survey of our culture. This is an important ongoing project for our School. We started in Term 4 last year with asking our students in Year 5 – Year 11 to share their experiences of our school culture and their sense of belonging. Most students reported they find the culture at our School positive. Some of the most common terms used by students to describe the culture include kind, inclusive, supportive, community, respectful, friendly and caring. This was encouraging news! But we also wanted to drill down into why some of our students might not always have that experience and asked questions around what the circumstances were when they did not feel such a strong sense of belonging or when others may have been unkind and why. As we look to place continued focus on ensuring results in the area of cultural experience are consistently high, we will be using that information to help us strengthen our Student Wellbeing Programmes across the entire school and also improve the way we, as a school, respond to issues, particularly those between students. Using this data to inform our next steps is an important component in our approach to strengthen our wellbeing offering at Cranbrook.

To that end, under the leadership of Angelique Sanders, Director of Student Wellbeing, strongly supported by a focus steering group with staff from across the school, we have undertaken a yearlong student wellbeing project with the AIS (Association of Independent Schools) with all staff K-Y12. Research strongly indicates that emotional regulation skills, social skills and self-motivational capacity were stronger predictors of academic achievement than cognitive skills.

Grounded firmly in research, the AIS Wellbeing Project works collaboratively with a variety of independent schools through professional learning and consultancy support to select evidence-based strategies and implement a whole school vision and approach to wellbeing. Key outcomes for our school include:

  • Establish new, or strengthen existing, whole-school processes and practices for monitoring and developing student mental health and wellbeing unique to our community;
  • Prioritise professional learning focused on developing staff knowledge, understanding and capacity to support student mental health and wellbeing;
  • Increase understanding of evidence-based, age-appropriate approaches, interventions and practices;
  • Establish networks and supportive relationships with wellbeing specialists beyond our school.

Whilst the initiative focuses on supporting student wellbeing, it is recognised that this is closely interconnected with positive relationships across the school staff, so this element will also be a key focus for us as we complete the project.

We have already undertaken the whole staff survey about wellbeing, attended some professional learning with our AIS Consultant, Laura Brennan, and started to review our policies, practices and programmes thoroughly. We are excited by the opportunities that this project presents to us to firmly embed programmes and practices that will best support our students and staff in the area of wellbeing.

As the year continues, we look forward to updating you on initiatives that flow from this project and the many other avenues we are currently pursuing as we seek to better understand our culture and how to strengthen it for the benefit of all our community.

Kind wishes,

Michele Marquet

Message from Grant Andrews, Acting Head of Junior School

Dear Parents and Carers,

We do hope you can join us tomorrow for our special Mother’s Day Morning. Mothers, grandmothers, aunts or other special females in the lives of our students are all welcome. Fathers are also welcome to attend! Activities and light refreshments commence at 7:45am and conclude by 8:30am.

In an effort to ensure the safety of a large number of people, carline will not operate tomorrow. There is very limited parking on the School site and it is therefore recommended that you arrange to be dropped off, or that you arrive early and park in the Lyne Park carpark. Please do not park in Iluka Street or Elanora Street.

Please note: Co-Curricular activities that would normally occur on Friday mornings will not be running.

At yesterday’s assembly, we were treated to a performance by the Training Band, led beautifully by Mr Hayles. Their performance was nothing short of enchanting. We were also fortunate to have Head of Strickland, Jonathan Gold, talk to the K-2 students about friendships and the importance of being kind.

Our Kindergarten cohort has been given a wonderful opportunity to create some artwork for the Australian Paralympic Team to be hung in the Athletes’ village in Paris. Annabelle Williams, a gold medal winning swimmer from the Beijing and London Paralympics, will also come to the School and speak to the students about how inspirational it was for her to have children’s artwork motivate her to greatness, alongside the important broader messaging around disability and inclusion.

The Junior School has been filled with the beautiful sounds of our students singing and creating music as the entire school has been busy preparing for our Showcase performances. Please see the detailed information in the Music section, so you know which concert(s) your son is involved in and details about those events and relevant rehearsals. The invitation to this musical extravaganza can be found here.

Kind regards,

Grant Andrews

Year 6 Learning Showcase
Year 6 families were invited to their sons’ classrooms during Week 1 this term to participate in a learning experience as part of the unit ‘How the world works.’

Students are learning about how innovation responds to the needs of people in a range of ‘real world’ contexts, including in our own School community. Using a ‘Design Thinking’ framework, they have defined an opportunity for improvement in our School environment. Through a variety of learning experiences during the ‘empathise’ and ‘define’ stage of the process, carline was identified as a common pain point for members of our community. Each student developed a driving question related to carline to explore further. We utilised our families as valuable sources for ideation and to gain further perspectives relating to our learning.

Thank you to all Year 6 families who came to support our learners as well as providing us with extremely beneficial ideas to use during the next stage of our inquiry.

Pre-Schools’ News – Week 2

Dear Families,

This week, our classes have been buzzing with love and laughter as our Pre-schoolers celebrated special Mother’s Day mornings with their cherished mums or special persons. It is always a memorable time to see the joy shared between children and their loved ones.

St. Mark’s had an exciting visit from the Rose Bay Police, adding a touch of real-world excitement to our play and role-playing activities. The visit provided invaluable insights for our children, connecting their learning to the world around them and reinforcing our classroom Essential Agreement.

Year 4 Fisherman’s Beach Excursion

This Tuesday, Year 4 went on their annual excursion to Fisherman’s Beach near Collaroy. Students explored why and how our coastal landscape is changing. They gained a deeper understanding of how and why geological changes can occur through hands-on activities, such as weather testing, rock and dune investigations. On a guided walk, they had the opportunity to observe and reflect on the cause and effect of both natural and human-made changes. Finally, they were shown how to use maps and geological equipment to measure the weather.

Year 5 Taronga Zoo Excursion

Year 5 had a fantastic time visiting Taronga Zoo this week and luckily the rain stayed away, so they were able to explore the zoo and take part in all of the activities.

Little League Winter Sport Round 1

Round 1 of winter sport brought both excitement and challenges for our Cranbrook teams, with a mix of results across various fixtures. The 6A’s had a tough Friday night lights matchup against Knox under the lights at Knox Grammar. Despite facing a motivated Knox team celebrating their centenary and playing in front of a home crowd, our students fought valiantly. Although the scoreboard didn’t reflect their efforts, they showed improvement throughout the game and took valuable lessons to carry into the rest of the season.

Saturday morning saw cancellations for all rugby and tennis fixtures, as well as many away games in football due to inclement weather. Despite these setbacks, there were some standout performances across our teams. The 3A and B football teams got off to a strong start, securing wins against Sydney Grammar, while the 6B’s and C’s also started the season with victories.

The 6A’s faced weary legs on Saturday morning after their intense Friday night game, but they displayed resilience and determination on the field.

In Year 4, there were mixed results, with some excellent skills on display. As the season progresses, there is plenty of room for improvement, and we look forward to seeing our players develop and grow.

With many teams unable to play in Week 1 due to weather conditions, we remain hopeful that the rain will hold off for Round 2, allowing games to proceed as scheduled.

Yours in Sport,

Mr James Roughan
