Message from Michele Marquet, Acting Head of School

Dear Parents and Carers,

Our first full week of classes has brought a palpable buzz and busy atmosphere across the School. Sport and co-curricular activities are getting started and our campuses are really coming to life.

New students at Pre-school, Junior School and Senior School are also starting to settle into routines and find their way about the campuses.

This term’s wellbeing theme across the whole school is ‘to be courageous’.  Every year, as students move up a year level, take on new opportunities, and meet new teachers and peers, they have opportunities to practise what it means to be courageous.

Our new students and staff to Cranbrook or students who are moving from one of our campuses to another, no matter what their age, will be acutely aware of this!

In student wellbeing classes, assemblies and other events, we are considering what it really means to be courageous in different contexts.

We hope through these discussions, our students come to understand what true courage looks like and how it can positively shape your character and prepare you for challenges that lie ahead.

Although many people believe courage is an absence of fear, in reality, it involves facing fears head-on and not avoiding them.

Bravery is not about never feeling afraid – but rather about how we act when we may feel scared or frightened and how in the moment when we are feeling afraid, we chose to act.

Brave actions are not about recklessness or unsafe risk taking, but rather will consider the consequences of our actions.

In times past, courage and bravery were associated with physical feats. This can still be true, but in our era, facing our fears can be just as much about standing up for what we believe is right, despite opposition or danger, as showing strength and heroism physically.

Fear can actually drive our determination to act and to be courageous – pushing us beyond our usual limits and inspiring positive change.

Courageousness and bravery are about weighing risks and deciding something is worth standing up for or fighting for, even when outcomes are uncertain or frightening.

To face one’s fears, we need to start to make brave choices in our everyday life and that is what we hope to help our students to recognise.

The key points above and the following tips are taken from the blog, Courage is not the absence of fear: Understanding the essence of bravery.

Practical tips for embracing courage

  1. Acknowledge your fears and confront them head-on. Ignoring or suppressing fear only gives it more power over you.
  2. Cultivate a growth mindset by viewing challenges as opportunities for personal development rather than obstacles.
  3. Surround yourself with supportive and encouraging individuals who uplift and inspire you to be brave.
  4. Practice self-care to maintain emotional resilience, such as meditation, exercise, and sufficient rest.
  5. Set small, achievable goals that gradually push you out of your comfort zone, building confidence with each accomplishment.
  6. Seek constructive feedback from trusted mentors or peers to gain valuable insights and improve your approach to overcoming fears.
  7. Take decisive action despite lingering doubts or uncertainties; small steps forward can lead to significant breakthroughs in courage.

We hope all our families enjoying a productive and happy week ahead.

Kind wishes

Message from Grant Andrews, Acting Head of Junior School

Dear Junior and Pre-school families,

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow’.” – Mary Anne Radmacher

We have officially completed our first full week of the school year, and what an absolutely fantastic start we have had. It has been wonderful to see students settling swiftly into routines, making new friends and diving into learning.

A particular highlight for us this week has been welcoming Kindergarten onsite for their very first few days of school. It has been delightful to watch them step into our School gates, the classrooms and the playground with incredible courage. We hope that this is the start (or in some cases, the continuation) of lifelong connections and friendships, and countless amazing memories to be made along the way. View our photo gallery here.

Thank you to all parents who attended the Parent Information Evening on Wednesday. We trust that the opportunity to gather as a School and as a cohort to hear about what this year holds in store for your child was greatly beneficial. It is always a great opportunity to meet the members of your child’s teaching team and, of course, to connect with other parents. A special thank you to those of you who have gone out of your way to make our newest Junior School families and carers feel welcome. A copy of the handouts from last night’s event can be found in your son’s year level tab on Cranbrook Connect.

We look forward to the full range of our programmes coming to life in Week 3 as we forge with earnest into the term ahead. A few reminders regarding what’s coming up next week:

  • Before and after school Co-curricular commences
  • Morning and afternoon sports training commences
  • Wednesday, 12 February – Year 6 Student Leaders’ Assembly 12pm – 1pm in JS Gym
  • Thursday, 13 February – Judith Locke Presentation to Kindy and new parents 12.30pm – 2pm

Dr Judith Locke is a registered clinical psychologist specialising in modern parenting, family wellbeing and academic environments, as well as a former teacher and school counsellor. Her practical strategies help parents and teachers assist children to become confident and capable as they develop their maturity and independence. Judith primarily works with schools and educational organisations around Australia and internationally, delivering keynotes, training and information sessions about the best ways to improve children’s wellbeing in a time when parenting and schooling has changed significantly from previous generations. She also has a clinical private practice in Brisbane, Australia. Judith has written the bestselling books for parents, The Bonsai Child and The Bonsai Student. Both give practical and effective strategies to build children’s resilience, confidence and capability in the home and in their schooling.  She has recently published Raising Anxiety with Dr Danielle Einstein, which discusses how our good intentions may inadvertently make children more anxious, and then practical strategies to turn this around.

Dear K-6 families,

Our parent-teacher interviews will commence in Week 4. This first meeting will provide a personal opportunity for parents to share important information that will assist us to teach their child this year. You should have received an email on Tuesday, outlining instructions for how to book a time with your child’s Class Teacher. Please book in a time by Friday, 14 February.

Also, on Cranbrook Connect, you will find the Annual Student Profile Survey, which has been sent home as a hard copy for parents to complete prior to the interview. If your copy has not made it home, please retrieve another copy from your son’s year level tab on Cranbrook Connect under Parenting News. Return this as soon as possible to your son’s Class Teacher.

Thank you for your support.

JS Music News – Week 2

Music in the Junior School plays a very important role in developing the whole-child and our dynamic Music Program provides a vast array of curriculum and performance opportunities to stimulate creativity, ways of thinking, enhance a sense of community and improve well-being in every child.

Please find below, further details about our 2025 Music Program and upcoming events.

Co-curricular Music and Instrumental Lessons 2025
If your son was in a music group for 2024, such as Chamber Choir, JSSO or Concert Band, we assume that he will continue in this group in 2025 unless we are otherwise advised. Please note: Co-Curricular Music ensemble rehearsals and private instrumental lessons commence in Week 3.

How do I enrol my son for private instrumental lessons?
To enrol, please go to the Operoo App and complete the ‘Learning an Instrument’ form found in the ‘Form Library’. Further questions can be directed to our Music Administrator, Sandra Trew, who rosters and coordinates these lessons: strew@cranbrook.nsw.edu.au

Auditions for Chamber Choir and Cranbrook Voices
All of Year 3 and all new students to the School (in Years 4 to 6) will be auditioned for a potential place in the Chamber Choir. A letter of offer will be given to those whose audition was successful.

Students in Year 5, whom are currently in the Chamber Choir, qualify to audition for a potential place in Cranbrook Voices. Auditions for Voices will take place in the first two weeks of Term, during class or after our first Chamber Choir rehearsal. An email will be sent to parents if their son’s audition is successful.

K-6 Music Morning Concerts
This year, in place of Lunchtime Concerts, we will hold Music Morning Concerts on certain Fridays from 8:00am to 8:30am in Music Room 1. These concerts are open to students in K to 6 who have a piece at performance standard, regardless of level, to perform. It’s always wonderful to hear their great work and witness our students’ progress in an encouraging environment. Instrumental teachers sign up their students, as appropriate, and you will receive an email from me with an invitation to attend should you like to hear your son perform.
