CARLINE REMINDERS

As we settle back into term, we seek our families support to help our carlines to run as smoothly as possible for our school and the local community. We continue to receive complaints from neighbours, so we again kindly request parents to please:

  • not park across the driveways of neighbours in Kent Road or New South Head Road;
  • not drop off or pick up their child in Iluka and Elanora Streets or in Manion Rd.

Morning Drop Off

The Cranbrook Junior School morning drop off begins at 7:45am.  To ensure the traffic in and around the school continues to flow, we appreciate you not arriving before 7:45am.  All boys must be dropped off by 8:10am at the latest to ensure the school day starts on time.

No cars should enter the school grounds before 7:45am, unless students are being dropped off for a co-curricular activity that begins before then. Please do not park or wait in the driveway or roundabout prior to 7:45am. Any boy who arrives before 7.45am (and does not have a co-curricular activity) will be sent to Before School Care, as we have previously indicated.

Afternoon Pick Up

In consideration of our neighbours in Kent Road, Royal Sydney Golf Club, and the Woollahra Council, we remind families about afternoon carline times to get you in and out as fast as possible.

The Cranbrook Junior School Walking Gate on Kent Road will be open from 2:30pm daily. We encourage all parents and students, where possible, to park in Lyne Park behind the tennis courts and walk into the School for drop off and pick up.

If you need to collect your child in the carline, please arrive at the indicated time for his year group and not before:

For Kindergarten, please arrive after 2:50pm.

For Y1 and Y2, please arrive after 3:00pm.

For Y3 and Y4, please arrive after 3:20pm.

For Y5 and Y6, please arrive after 3:30pm.

We appreciate your cooperation and support in this.

Message from Michele Marquet

Message from Michele Marquet

Dear P-Y6 Parents,

A very warm welcome back! It has been fantastic to see our students and families back at School after the winter break.

Next week, our five-year PYP Evaluation Visit will be held. Two representatives from the IBO will meet with staff, students and parents to discuss the feedback gathered during our self-study process this year and look for future directions.

Yesterday, we held our Founders’ Day Assembly. Mr Nicholas Sampson attended as our guest speaker and he provided an interesting perspective on how Cranbrook has evolved, but also remained the same in the ways that really matter. We remembered the individuals who founded our School, reflected on the values they held dear and considered how we can use those principles to help us look to the future with confidence. It was an excellent way to start the term.

CETOP WEEK

CETOP is a not-for-profit organisation made up of staff and families associated with Cranbrook that supports communities in Ladakh, India (SS) and Nepal (JS). In Nepal, the Junior School supports work in the areas of dental health and education. Since 2011, we have conducted nine trips to Nepal with Y6 students accompanied by one of their parents. It is exciting that our trips to Ladakh and Nepal are now able to start again.

In Week 3 this term, we are hosting a CETOP Week across the entire school to increase awareness about CETOP, collect toothbrushes for our next Y6 trip to Nepal (end of Term 1 2024) and raise some funds for the work of CETOP generally.

Sausage Sizzle

On Thursday, 3 August (Y3-Y6) and Friday, 4 August (K-Y2), we are holding a sausage sizzle for our students. For $5, students will receive a sausage, bread (normal/gluten-free) and an icy block. Dietary needs will be provided for and families will receive an order form via email early next week explaining the options and how to order and pay.

Toothbrush Collection

We are excited to announce our ambitious goal of collecting 500 toothbrushes before Wednesday, 30th August. The toothbrushes will be donated to CETOP and delivered during our next Y6 trip to Nepal (end of Term 1 2024) to help promote oral hygiene in Himalayan communities. If we achieve our target of 500 toothbrushes in time, all students will be rewarded with a fun-filled event on Friday, 15th September. The event will include options like wearing silly socks, bringing your own hat (BYO hat), or participating in a crazy hair day! The final number of brushes and end of term event details will be officially announced during Week 8 Assembly/Chapel. We look forward to seeing our Cranbrook community come together and contribute through service in this practical way.

Staff News

Year 6W Class teacher and Year Level Coordinator, Mr Scott Wells, will be leaving us at the end of next week. Scott, his partner Dionne Jones (one of our St Michael’s Pre-school teachers) and baby, Alfred, are returning to the UK. Scott will be taking up a promotional position at a group of Academy Schools. We thank Scott and Dionne for their dedicated and passionate work with our students over the past 5 years. We wish Scott, Dionne and Alfred the very best as they start life back in the UK.

We welcome Mr Etiosa Okunbor, who will take up the role of 6W Class Teacher for the remainder of the year. This year, Etiosa has been teaching across all year levels at Cranbrook. An experienced primary classroom teacher, he taught in Sydney, the UK and the Northern Territory before joining us in the Junior School.

We welcome Mrs Kate Stead back to Cranbrook as 2R Class Teacher during Mr David Holmsen’s long service leave; Miss Catherine Stamp as 1W Class Teacher during Mrs Chloe Jennings’ maternity leave and Miss Rebecca Armstrong as Art Teacher during Mr Christian Bonett’s term of leave. Cranbrook Junior School’s City2surf Team

It is official, we have a team: The Cranbrook Junior School will be represented at City2surf!

18 staff members will be taking part in Sydney’s biggest sporting event of the year at the City2surf on 13 August 2023. Some participants will be walking, others will be running, but all of us will be doing it for a good cause. We are planning to raise money for the Children’s Cancer Institute and for the Cranbrook NGO, CETOP. Our aim is to raise $1,000 or more.

If you are available on the day, we would love to see lots of Cranbrook Junior School students along with their families to support us on the streets around the school.

Another way to support us is to donate to one of the charities by clicking the links below:

Eastwinds from Musica Viva comes to Cranbrook Junior School for K to 6 Music workshops

  • Tuesday, 1st August (Week 3)

Prior to Eastwinds’ visit, in class, students will explore how we can create and connect to one another through improvisation based on our personal experiences. Eastwinds weaves a difficult to define spacious tapestry of sound that finds a bridge between east and west, folk and jazz, composition and improvisation. Most of all it’s a sound unique to this group. Eastwinds have been performing as an ensemble based in Fremantle, Western Australia, since 2014.

Opera Australia’s comes to perform El Kid at Cranbrook Junior School for K to 6

  • Monday, 11th September (Week 9)

Opera Australia’s Schools Tour aims to capture some of the passion and feeling of largescale theatrical operas in a more informal and accessible way for children. All of the songs and instrumental music used in El Kid come from the well-known opera, Carmen, composed by Georges Bizet and first performed in 1875, while the story of El Kid is based on the Norwegian folktale, Three Billy Goats Gruff. Students will study the combined creative and dramatic elements of opera and engage with many musical excerpts, through singing, moving and playing, leading up to this performance.

What a week! We have thoroughly enjoyed our roles as Captains so far. A highlight for us has been spending time with the younger divisions on the mountain, prepping them for their races and taking them through course inspections. We look forward to the State competitions at the end of August in Perisher and are pleased to see so many boys have made it through to the next level of competition.

Finally, we thank Mrs Erickson-Adam, Mr Scardino and Miss Whitten for all of their support in the lead up to and during the week of competition. We also thank Mr Hugh Dowling for organising Cranbrook’s annual and much enjoyed ‘on-mountain’ BBQ luncheon.
