Little League Summer Sports Report Round 1

I am pleased to report that the first round of the Summer Sport Season for Cranbrook Junior School has been a success, thanks to the positive attitude and work ethic of our boys. In Cricket, Basketball, and Tennis, the teams demonstrated teamwork, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm.

The boys’ efforts in Cricket were commendable as they showed impressive technique and a willingness to learn, resulting in several well-deserved victories. The Basketball team displayed a high level of skill and dedication, with some excellent passing and dribbling. In Tennis, the boys exhibited good teamwork and spirit while encountering some tough matchups.

I am impressed by our young athletes and their accomplishments throughout the first Round of the Season. Their positive attitude and consistent work ethic showed through in their performances on the weekend.

Basketball Year 5/6 Cs – Cranbrook 20 defeated Kings 19

The Cs kicked off their season with a thrilling win over Kings. Cranbrook came out a bit slow on both ends of the court, and this resulted in easy baskets to Kings. In the second half, the team showed great resilience to claw their way back into the game. A late basket gave Cranbrook the victory 20-19. Well done to Leonardo B and Eamonn R for their outstanding effort throughout the game.

Basketball Year 5/6 Ds – Cranbrook 24 defeated Kings 14

The Ds had an impressive start to the season, defeated Kings in a convincing fashion. The team displayed great urgency on defence and capitalised on the offensive end. Great teamwork, ended in several stylish baskets by the boys. Congratulations must go to Kaspar B on his outstanding first game of basketball and Michael I for his ability to score under pressure.

Basketball Year 5/6 Hs – Cranbrook 2 defeated by Knox 52

Cranbrook put forward a valiant effort against a very sizeable and skilled Knox outfit. Felix S was constantly getting up and down the court with vital transition defence. Lachy C scored our lone basket and showed persistence all game.

Basketball Year 3/4 As – Cranbrook 12 defeated by Scots 36

The boys started the game with excellent ball movement and sound defence that led to Will S getting some wide-open shots that he took advantage of. However, for the remainder of the game, Scots pulled away, scoring with ease. Although the game was rather lopsided, the boys should be proud of their resilience, namely Luca M and Gus T.

Basketball Year 3/4 Bs – Cranbrook 5 defeated by Scots 25

From the outset, the B’s lack of size was on display, with a much larger opposition taking advantage early on. Despite this disadvantage, the sheer competitiveness of the boys was inspiring to see, leading to outstanding baskets by Woody W and Aarav S. Following the game, the boys were able to identify their mistakes, and were eager to rectify this in training next week.

Basketball Year 3/4 Cs – Cranbrook 8 defeated by Scots 19 The Cs took on a much more experienced 3A Scots team. Early baskets in transition off the back of our defence was integral to keeping us in this game. Outstanding defence was shown from Henry H and Robert Z, and excellent overall play was displayed by Jack F and Jamie S in the game. However, in the closing 10 minutes, the boys a little complacent and the level of intensity dropped, allowing Scots to make a run and close out the game.

Basketball Year 3/4 Ds – Cranbrook 8 defeated by Scots 19

The boys were eager to start the season off against a tough Scots 3B team. From the get-go, Oliver S got stuck in on defence leading to a few timely fastbreak baskets. This game exemplifies the point that maintaining high energy and effort throughout the game can and will lead to winning results. Because the energy levels were sporadic, Scots would get easy baskets. Although we lost, the Ds should be proud of the effort put forth, with special mention to Wolf T and Louis B for a consistent effort on both ends of the court.

Basketball Year 3/4 White 1 – Cranbrook 3 defeated by Scots 24

Year 3/4 white 1 lost to a Scots team that was far too big to handle. Despite the loss Liam C played outstanding defensively trying his hardest to contain the Scots centres.

Basketball Year 3/4 White 2 – Cranbrook 5 defeated by Scots 12

Year 3/4 white 2 went down in a close game against Scots losing 12-5. On Cranbrook’s side Alfie L-B led the team snagging rebounds and steals and was elite in transition.  Albert L’s presence was disrupting the Scots offense all game as he battled to get rebounds and blocks all game.

Basketball Year 3/4 Blue 1 – Cranbrook 28 defeated Coogee Prep 6

Year 3/4 blue 1 played outstanding against Coogee Prep winning the game 28-6. Thom S was a key contributor with his height recording a series of blocks, layups, and rebounds throughout the game. Sammy I played like a classic point guard dishing out dimes to the likes of Josh H who was present in the key throughout the game. Well done boys.

Basketball Year 3/4 Blue 2 – Cranbrook defeated by Scots

Year 3/4 blue 2 also lost to Scots in a closer matchup but once again were overpowered by the size of their opponents. The entire team came together and showed great effort preventing Scots offense in the 2nd half to only 7 pts.

Year 5A Cricket – Cranbrook 99 defeated Sydney Grammar 75

Having been sent into bat, Jack R opened Cranbrook’s account with a bang, demolishing the oppositions opening pair with ease. A clever partnership from Otto Y saw Cranbrook get off to a great start, which was further built upon by Xavier M bringing out the broom for some exquisite sweep shots, helping Cranbrook to a good total.

With the ball, Oscar R’s first salvo was as devastating as it was quick, setting Cranbrook up for a great start. The wickets fell thanks to some great fielding and wicket keeping from Alistair M, the boys glided to a solid victory which will be the springboard for a good season to come. 

Year 5B Cricket – Cranbrook 22 defeated by Sydney Grammar 23

Turning up against a solid Grammar side, Cranbrook batted first and felt the full effect of the long grass at Queens Park 6. With the bat we struggled to capitalise and lost a few wickets which hurt our total.

Things were far more successful with the ball, with Charlie H leading from the front, bowling consistent line and length. Unfortunately, we went down by the narrowest margin possible – 1 run. Now the boys have dusted off the veritable cobwebs, the 5Bs will be a feared opponent in the realm of junior cricket.

Year 4A Cricket – Cranbrook 120 defeated Sydney Grammar 72

Cranbrook got a great victory against Sydney Grammar. Special mentions go to Jimmy C (27*) and Will P (3 wickets). Cranbrook scored 120 to Grammars 72. Keep up the great work boys!

Year 4Red Cricket –Cranbrook 36 defeated by Newington College 41

The boys were unfortunate to be 2 less players than the Newington boys but this gave them more opportunity to bat and bowl. Following on from the C’s win, they followed suit opting to bat first with Freddie H and Leo M taking the charge to their opponents withholding a fierce bowling attack to get through their innings only losing 1 wicket in total. The second pair were Jonathan K and Xander R. These boys also played a pivotal role in maintaining the steady flow of runs with losing only 1 wicket, Xander R hitting multiple boundaries. Next in were Jack L and Lucas S, visibly keen to get the team into a good position. With Lucas S’ excellent rotation of the strike and Jack L’s ability running between the wickets. The boys only also lost 1 wicket in their innings. Lastly, as we only had 6, Freddie and Lucas batted again and fatigue wasn’t a challenge for the two boys as they went through their innings without losing a single wicket. The boys did well to finish up on a total of 36 but knew it would be hard to defend with the game on the line. The boys started off extremely well, Jack L opened the bowling and was challenging wickets with every ball bowled. Special mentions to Freddie H, Lucas S, Xander R, and Leo M for their tight bowling making the game especially close. When it came down to the last over Jonothan K bowled unbelievably to take 2 wickets in 2 balls. The boys unfortunately went down by 5 runs but showed great resilience in the way they played in the face of adversity.

Year 4Blue Cricket – Cranbrook 70 defeated Newington College 0

The players started off well deciding to bat initially, Oli D and Christian K got us off to a good start with losing only 1 wicket within the first 3 overs. The next pair set the tone by taking every opportunity to score runs possible with Freddie F maintaining much of the strike which couldn’t have been done without Julian D’s loud calling at the other end. The boys after their 3 overs had a total of 33 runs for no wickets lost. Into the third pair was Jerry W and Hadley S who had expectations following on from the previous pair and both boys played exceptionally with losing only 1 wicket as well. Going into our last pair as we had 7, Julian D batted again and made the most of his second opportunity with Julian D and Hugo C scoring a total of 30 runs off their 3 overs with the boys ending up on 70 after 12 overs. With the bowling we at a disadvantage being a man down. The 4C’s started off well taking wickets every few balls, this momentum continued throughout the innings. Julian D’s leg spin was unbelievable and was complimented by the rest of the boys bowling to take down Newington into the negatives by the end of the innings.

Year 3A Master Blasters – Cranbrook 80 Defeated by Grammar St Ives 210

The Cranbrook 3A’s started their season well despite a loss to Grammar St Ives. Losing the toss and bowling first, Eric L-F set the tone with a wicket on the third ball. The plan to attack the stumps and make the batsman play paid dividends with the boys picking up 7 wickets and Harry P taking two spectacular catches. In reply, the batting innings never got going despite a huge six in the final over from Lachie E. 

Year 3B Master Blasters – Cranbrook 62 defeated by St Ives Grammar 117

It was a beautiful morning at Dangar oval matching the occasion of the boys first game of cricket representing the school. Although the result was a tough defeat, there were numerous positives with some sharp fielding from Oli B, strong batting from captain Will S, fast paced bowling from Sam Y. Overall it is an encouraging and positive group of boys. We will work on our fielding and running between the wickets this week to get back into winning ways. 

Year 3C Master Blasters – Cranbrook 56 defeated St Ives Grammar 33

A very Wet surface greeted the mighty Year 3 blasters as they entertained Sydney Grammar on Dangar No.1. Boys were excited and matched this with some top-quality batting. Fielding is the key work on from this week, we need to be a little more focused on bats off the tee and filling deeper spaces. Big mention goes to “Captain Beckett C” who was terrific throughout and lead his teammates to a tight 10 run victory. Onwards and upwards to next week.

TENNIS

Tennis As

Saturday saw the start of term 1 summer Junior Tennis. The A team were playing Riverview at home. The boys all showed great teamwork and support for one another against a very strong Riverview side. The Cranbrook boys never gave up and pushed their opponents all the way. Special mention to Miles M and Jansen J combining well in their doubles to win 6-1. Also an impressive singles win by Shai L winning 5-0. I felt the whole team showed great improvement and the Cranbrook coaching team are excited for the next fixture.

Tennis Cs

Saturday the Cranbrook C team played against a strong and experienced Waverley. Very close matches from George Y or James B. Special mention to Blake H who achieved the only victory and showed a competitive tennis. 

MULTISPORTS

The 2023 Multi-sports squad shows great potential early in the season! The boys are enthusiastic and prepared to do the extra work to improve their skill set! Lucas Z was player of the week, showing some exceptional fielding skills. Christopher H demonstrated excellent throwing technique and James B brilliant batting skills.
