Book Week 2022

‘Dreaming with eyes open’…what a fantastic theme to celebrate the imagination of readers and writers. Throughout the week, students and staff engaged in an array of activities and events that connected us to the theme and stories collectively. Here is a snapshot:

For the first time since 2018, the whole Junior School physically came together to bring characters to life in our Book Character Parade and House Celebration. Albeit a chilly morning, the sun prevailed, and students, staff and parents embraced the event with much enjoyment and appreciation. The Houses then gathered to meet their buddies’ book characters up close. They shared a sweet story, ‘Most Marshmallows’, that inspired us to believe that by being true to ourselves, each of us has the power to be extraordinary; encouraging us to dream big. Buddy groups then brought their characters to life by stepping into role and capturing them with group action photographs. Each student’s departing gift…a yummy marshmallow!

Our inaugural Book at Bedtime event for Kindergarten and Year 1 was a magical and memorable evening of fairy lights, PJs, cuddly toys, and stories. Larry the Library Lobster even made a larger-than-life guest appearance, ‘escaping’ from the iCentre to join this special event.

Years K-2 and Years 5-6 were treated to online theatrical book adaptations of two of the CBCA Awards shortlisted titles, ‘Stellarphant’ by James Foley and ‘The Detective’s Guide to Ocean Travel’ by Nicki Greenberg, respectively. Produced by Meerkat Productions, students and teachers responded with praise to this opportunity to view actors unravel a story through performance including songs and puppetry.

Local author, Nathan Luff, visited our Years 3 and 4 students for a rollicking journey through his storytelling career since childhood. He reminded us that stories are everywhere – from books to podcasts, from the stage to games. Nathan’s use of wordplay and exaggeration appealed; motivating many students to pursue reading his books. Nathan’s books are available to purchase online here and they will be sent to the School for distribution and signing. Please place orders by Monday, 5th September.

To conclude celebrations, classes have participated in the annual Book Week Kahoot Quiz in recent Library sessions. Which House will be awarded Literary Legends for 2022?

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to families and staff for their support, creativity, and enthusiasm in making Book Week 2022 a wonderful promotion of reading and literature for our school community.
