Dear Parents,

It is almost the end of Week 3 already! Thank you to the amazing CSPA team of P-Y6 Class Reps with Vice President JS, Angelique Haritos, and President, Sam Roberts, who organised a wonderful Drinks on the Drive last Friday evening. The weather was kind, the food plentiful and the drinks flowing for a lovely evening for our P-6 families. For the first time in 7 years, we were able to gather in this way and strengthen those vital relationships that underpin our school community.

Tomorrow, Friday 27 October, all our students are invited to bring in a gold coin or note to support the work of CETOP in Nepal and to wear crazy socks, as well as attend the annual Staff and Teachers Basketball Game in the Gym at lunchtime. The staff-student game is a reward for our JS students who collected more than 500 toothbrushes for Nepal last term.

Today, we welcomed back the ‘Courage to Care’ group who presented a workshop for our students in Year 6. Our Year 5 students will also have this group come to speak with them in the weeks ahead.

This powerful experience promotes acceptance across society through:

  • Creating awareness of the dangers of prejudice, racism and discrimination
  • Educating to challenge attitudes and behaviours
  • Demonstrating that every individual can make a difference
  • Transforming ‘bystander’ behaviour to ‘upstander’

The boys were mesmerised by the films and stories as the guest speakers recounted powerful narratives of rescuers and the people they saved – ordinary people performing extraordinary acts of courage.

The second part of the morning was a workshop where the students were encouraged to reflect on their own lives and how they can be ‘upstanders’ in their own world. By highlighting the extraordinary acts of ordinary people who intervened to save others, the survivor speaker stories show our students that they too can be ‘upstanders’ – in our school and in the wider community. As we look around the world at the moment, we certainly need people who can do just that.
